Short Takes: Worth Reading, 7/14/08

Short takes is my way of cramming a lot into a small space for you..kind of like the young gentleman above is doing! Here's a brief rundown of some of today's items of interest for Joshua's Army:

*President Bush has finally grown a pair when it comes to energy policy in America, stating that he will lift the executive order banning offshore oil drilling. By itself this has no practical impact, because Congress enacted its own prohibition on offshore drilling in 1981 which would have be to rescinded for exploration to proceed. However, it is a major step in the right direction and ramps up political pressure on one of the most distracted do-nothing congresses in our nation's history.Needless to say, the usual suspects, including Barack Obama are against it.

*JoshuaPundit offers birthday greetings and congratulations to radio legend George Putnam (July 14th, 1914) who is still on the air on various NBC outlets and on cable radio at 94 and still giving the Left fits. He was one of the pioneers of talk radio, starting his radio show 'TALKBACK with George Putnam' back in 1975. Best wishes and many happy returns, sir.

*The International Criminal Court has filed charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes against Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for the horrendous events in Darfur. In a related item, the UN is withdrawing its staff from the area

*Syria's thug-in-chief Basher Assad is in Paris today after being invited to France's 'Mediterranean Union ' conference and is being feted by French president Nicholas Sarkozy as part of the Bastille Day ceremonies. Part of the festivities include a military review on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, and Assad's presence angered a good many French veterans and soldiers, considering that Syria was behind the 1983 bombing of a Beirut barracks that killed 58 French troops.

"We feel uneasy" about French soldiers filing past Assad, said Jean-Luc Hemar, head of the Association of Veterans. Well they might..although President Sarkozy seems to have no problem consorting with him.

*The Feds are going to bail out Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, shifting the burden from Wall Street to the American taxpayer. We have by no means heard the last of this.

*Apparently the Olmert Government's plans to have Israel to swap live murderers to Hezbollah for dead bodies is proceeding on schedule, with the transfer set for Wednesday.

This is an incredibly foolish idea, with implications that go beyond Israel. If it happens, I'll have more to say about it, rest assured.

Should anyone doubt the feral tribal lust for blood of Israel's Arab adversaries,I suggest you read this odious story by our friends at the AP detailing the hero's welcome the Lebanese have planned for child killer Samir Kuntar.

*And speaking of Israel, yet another corruption allegation has been filed against PM Ehud `Envelopes' Olmert, this one claiming that he double billed the government and various private parties for the same airline tickets when he was Jerusalem mayor and trade minister. He is also accused of using allegedly ill-gotten gains from the trips to finance private family travel in what the media have dubbed the Olmert Tours affair. How long O Lord, how long?
