Putin sticks it to the West..again

Shortly after meeting with President Bush and agreeing to assist in curbing Iran's nuclear program, Putin once again shows that he's unworthy of any serious consideration as an ally against jihad.

After Putin's assurances to Bush, the anouncement that Russia was selling $1 billion worth of weapons to Iran comes as a new sign that Russia is prepared to play the same role with the jihadists as it played with Hitler prior to the German surprise attack on the Soviet Union. Russia: Weapons to Iran for Defense Only - Forbes.com

For those who've forgotten, Hitler and Stalin were on the best of terms and the Russians supplied the Nazis with all the raw materials they wanted while Hitler pummelled the Western democracies..right up until the Nazis launched a surprise attack on the Russians in June of 1941.

The Russians, of course, are claiming that these are only `defensive weapons'.Like Iran just wants all those nukes for peaceful purposes!

The biggest part of the arms purchases covered in the deal are 30 Tor-M1 missile systems to be sent to Iran over the next two years.

The Tor-M1 is reportedly able to identify up to 48 targets and fire at two targets simultaneously at a height of up to 20,000 feet.

Defensive? Well, maybe. And guess what they're going to be defending?

The Israelis, of course are understandably upset about all this. Sharon, trying to put a tough face on his new Kadima party stated that Israel can not accept a nuclear-armed Iran. And Israeli AMAN commander Brig. Aharon Zeevi Wednesday said Nov. 30 in his briefing to the Knesset foreign affairs and security committee that if international diplomacy on Iran fails to bring results by March 2006, it will be too late. Iran will have the full capability to manufacture nuclear weapons.

Some of my Israeli correspondants pointed out to me that this coincides with the coming March 2006 Israeli elections and Sharon may be planning a strike on Iran in that time period. Perhaps. Israel took delivery of a number of bunker busting bombs and specially adapted long range planes from the US right at the beginning of the year. And I have an unconfirmed report that Germany, with the ok of the US has agreed to sell Israel a few Dolphin class missle carrying submarines.

Yesterday, Israel did a successful test of the Arrow anti-missile against a simulated enemy missile resembling an Iranian nuclear-capable Shehab-3.

The US, meanwhile is apparently preparing to for the possibility that it will have to deal with Iran's nuclear program without the assistance of the UN or the IAEA by attempting to put together a program of trade sanctions with Europe and Japan.

Assuming sanctions work better than they have in the past(a REAL big assumption), this gives rise to a couple of questions: First of all, how are sanctions going to prevent Iran from going nuclear? And second, if the UN is incapable of dealing with a basic issue like this, why bother to be a part of it?
