Watcher's council nominations, 9/6/06

Every week, the Watcher's Council nominate two posts each, one from the Council members and one from outside for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week’s Council nominations can be found at our fearless leader's site Watcher of Weasels

Some great stuff this week:

1. J O S H U A P U N D I T: It is time for Jews to think about leaving Western Europe I'm normally an optimist, but I can't help seeing what I see in front of me... and the fact is that I see the Jews living in most of Western Europe and Scandanavia as living on borrowed time. What's worse, there are a lot of Europeans who will find this new version of the Final Solution to be convenient, easy to stomache and a lot less messy than the one sixty years ago....

2. Gates of Vienna: Al-Turki Gets 27 Years Dymphna writes on the conviction of Homaidan Al-Turki, A Saudi bookstore owner and `student' living in Colorado convicted of sexually assaulting his Indonesian housekeeper and keeping her as a slave, along with some theft and false imprisonment charges.

Dymphna makes the point that al-Turki is likely telling the truth when he says that he committed no crime. Sexual congress with a slave isn’t rape under Shariah law..even though the girl was all of seventeen when she went to work for the al-Turki family.

Ah well...al-Turki will undoubtedly be on the receiving end of some of the same medicine he dealt out to his slave girl at the hands of his fellow inmates. It's nice when justice gets done!

3.Done With Mirrors: Condi's Civil War Callimachus compares the parallels between the Democratic party of 1864 and the Democratic party today. He's got a point, of course, though I actually thought the `04 election was a more exact parallel, given Kerry's stance as a `war hero' - by the way, did you know he served in Vietnam?.

4. ShrinkWrapped: Reasons for Optimism: Part V Shrink continues with his fine series on the coming war. A worthy read, with some fascinating links.

5. AbbaGav Translating Khatami - Don't worry, he's moderate Abbagav covers the rhetoric voiced by Iranian `moderate' Khatami as he visits Harvard, hangs out with his jihadi pals at CAIR and schmoozes with that loyal American, Jimmy Carter.

It's a disgrace that this scumbag was allowed to pollute the soil of my beloved country with his foul presence. Kudos to Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney for denying Khatami the use of any state services or protection and voicing his disgust with Harvard for receiving him.

6. Right Wing Nut House: 9/11 TIN FOIL HATS ARE MELTING Rick Moran does a great job of explaining the recent govenrment reports aimed at debunking the 9/11 conspoiracy theorists. `Bout time...

7. The Sundries Shack, featuring Jimmie Bise appears to have some kind of error. I will edit this post with a summary of his entry as soon as possible.
*************
OK,here it is: The Sundries Shack:It’s Not a War. It’s a Trendy Buzzword! Jimmie makes the point that the President's use of the term `Islamic fascism' is totally justified, and takes issue with a CNN piece decrying that. I agree with him

8.Rhymes With Right: Did "Dishonorable Don" Richardson Solicit A Bribe? Greg appears to have outed a local politician soliciting a blatant bribe..let's see this guy squirm out of this one!

9. The Glittering Eye: New Orleans, One Year After Dave examines the state of the recovery one year on. As someone familiar with the city, I have to say that Nagin and company are likely to rebuild N'awlins just like it was...and that's the heart of the problem in a nutshell.

10. Soccer Dad: Reporters blogger behaving badly? Soccer Dad takes a sharp look at the difference between journalism and advocacy..and reports on a run-in with Steven Erlanger of the New York Times which is a story in itself.

11.The law's power to combat implicit bias : Socratic Rhythm Method A scary piece by Matt as he writes about the legalistics of implied bias. Whew!!

12.The Education Wonks: Students Swearing In Class: Tolerating The Intolerable? EdWonk writes about the latest folly in the world of education..a new doctrine that tells teachers not to discipline students for swearing in class!

The idea, of course, is that some students come to school with `baggage' from home and the idea is to keep them in school and maintain that all important daily attendance to get the dollars from the Feds.

What this is,of course, is a further breakdown in the idea of discipline, of restraining certain inclinations, or in short, socialization..something the schools used to teach, once upon a time.

Now, here's a quaestion: if a student is allowed to say `f--- you' to a teacher in thre course of the day, is the teacher going to be disciplined for referring to the little darling in return as a f-----g idiot'?

Just wondering.
