SF School Board dumps JROTC program

Kids with more brains than their elders, protesting the closure of the JROTC program

In San Francisco, the School board voted to dump the popular JROTC (Junior ROTC) program.

Dozens of JROTC cadets at the board meeting burst into tears or covered their faces after the vote.

"We're really shocked,'' said fourth-year Cadet Eric Chu, a senior at Lowell High School, his eyes filling with tears. "It provided me with a place to go."

The reasons given for dumping the 90 year old program, which serves 1,600 students are the openly anti-military sentiments of the school board and their assertion that the military discriminates against homosexuals.

"It's basically a branding program, or a recruiting program for the military," Board member Dan Kelly said before the meeting.

Well we can't have that, can we?

Here's a money quote from one of the leaders of one of the groups lobbying against JROTC programs nationwide, the American Friends Service Committee: "We don't want the military ruining our civilian institutions," said Sandra Schwartz, "In a healthy democracy ... you contain the military. You must contain the military."

At least, you must contain OUR military, in these people's eyes. The American Friends Service Committee has a long history and is known for its active support of the Viet Cong, the NVA and Saddam's Republican Guard even when they were shooting at our troops.

The opponents of the program acknowledge that it provides discipline and support for teenagers and helps some students stay in school and out of trouble.

"This is where the kids feel safe, the one place they feel safe," Robert Powell, a JROTC instructor at Lincoln High School and a retired Army lieutenant colonel, said earlier in the evening. "You're going to take that away from them?"

Yup, colonel. That's no reason to contribute to the Amerikkkan imperialist fascist War Machine, now is it?

With what's gone on in San Francisco in the last 6 years or so, I am literally embarrassed to admit that I lived there and that it was once my home town. Such people are unworthy of the freedom they enjoy at the expense of other, far more worthy people who are willing to serve in the military these people despise and defend their liberty.

  1. Pull all federal monies from the districts until they back down. The left might preach spread the wealth they don't really mean it.

  2. There's a federal law called the Solomon Amendment that covers exactly this area..if the Feds choose to enforce it.

In order for a healthy democracy to exist in the first place, you must have a military that's willing to protect it.

    These people are unworthy.

I am a JROTC alumni from San Francisco, and all I can say is that those Board Members don't know what they're talking about when it comes to JROTC.
I've never heard of any of them actually going to the high schools and talking to the students. All their arguments are about the military branding our kids, or that the "don't ask don't tell" policy trickles down to JROTC as well... Let me ask them this, the military is a significant part of our history. Neglecting the need of a military is just extreme-liberalism, that I'm starting to feel disgusted about. And for all the LGBT issues, ask the students!! There were and are openly gay students in the program... can you imagine a guy saying that he's gay on the football or wrestling team?? They'll get more abuse than ANYONE in JROTC...
I wanted to settle back to San Francisco, and have my kids go to public schools there, but now that there's no JROTC, I'm thinking twice about it...
