Royal warns of violence if Sarkozy wins

Ah, such sweetness and light.

Socialist candidate Segolene Royal, in a last ditch attempt to rescue her fading poll numbers decided to play the `fear' card in the closing days of the election, and warned of widespread violence if Sarkozy wins.

On the last day of official campaigning, Royal made speeches on French radio accusing the former interior minister of lying and polarizing France.

"Choosing Nicolas Sarkozy would be a dangerous choice," Royal told RTL radio. "It is my responsibility today to alert people to the risk of (his) candidature with regards to the violence and brutality that would be unleashed in the country (if he won)," she said.

Asked whether she was saying there would be actual violence in France's volatile Muslim suburbs , Royal said: "I think so, I think so."

This is typically how the Left behaves when they are in danger of losing power.

A TNS Sofres survey published on Friday showed Sarkozy at 54.5 percent, compared to 45.5 percent for the Socialist Royal, and an IPSOS poll put Sarkozy at 54 percent against 46 percent for Royal.

Royal's over the top performance during the television debate between her and Sarkozy seems to have solidified his lead in the polls.

Sarkozy apparently laughed off her comments.

"She's not in a good mood this morning. It must be the opinion polls," he told Europe 1 radio.

"She's finishing in violence, in a certain state of feverishness," he told reporters during a trip to the Alps. "It adds nothing to the debate."

The elections are scheduled for this Sunday, May 6th.
