Watcher's Council Nominations, 05/02/07
Every week, the Watcher's Council members nominate two posts each, one from the Council members and one from outside for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week's Council nominations can be found at the site of our fearless leader, Watcher of Weasels
OK, here's this week's Council lineup:
1. J O S H U A P U N D I T: Giuliani on Hamas, Fatah and Islamic terrorism This week, I focused on a number of statements from GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani that caused a bit of a firestorm among some prominent appeasement and isolationist minded Democrats. As I say in the article, aside from Duncan Hunter, Mayor Giuliani seems to be, aside from Duncan Hunter, the only candidate from either party so far who appears to have a clue of the actual nature of the existential war we're in, and whom our enemies are.
He's at least saying some of the right things, and I'm cautiously optimistic.
2. Done With Mirrors: After Iraq Callimachus looks at the upcoming Iraq pullout, and asks some serious questions about where US policy is heading.
The only place we differ is that he feels that a massive bloodbath will occur after we're gone between the Sunnis and Shiites...and I think the war will be between the Shiites, Iran against the Kurds, since the Sunnis have mostly been marginalized already, on our watch.
3. Soccer Dad: A new new europe? Soccer Dad looks at the coming French elections and sees them as a sign on which way `Old Europe' is headed. So do I.
4. The Glittering Eye: Forlorn Hope This week, The Glittering Eye's Dave Schuler reacts to the same polls I did about what the Muslim street thinks and wonders why.
As I stated in a comment on his site, I think it's fairly simple. It's silly to worry about what we did wrong, or about placating the Muslim world because the biggest sin we've committed is simply impeding their ideological system from taking over., which is why they feel that America and the West are `at war with Islam'. Islam and our notion of freedom are simply incongruous at the present time and they have a religious imperative that involves conquest.
We simply need to make the nation states that fund and attempt to push this conquest on us understand that this is not an acceptable option for us...by whatever means necessary.
5. Right Wing Nut House : CHANGING TIMES DEMAND TELLING THE TRUTH IN WARTIME Rick makes an interesting point this week, focusing on the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch stories; that it is no longer possible in today's media climate to `dress things up' and make heroes in today's media climate.
I agree with him, and the two cases he mentions were egregious...but I would add that every culture needs its myths and its heroes to inspire it to sacrifice, and the `current media climate' would do well to think hard about what they're promoting with their current agenda.
6. Rhymes With Right - Zero Tolerance Goes Way Too Far Greg writes this week about a college graduate suing her university for failing to award her the degree and credential sh eearned..because of a picture on the internet that apparently showed her looking `unprofessional' at a Halloween party.
7. The Colossus of Rhodey: Voter Fraud? Not a big deal! Hube examines the leftist myth of widespread `voter fraud' and debunks it.
Actually, voter fraud does exist...in old machine controlled Democrat enclaves like Chicago, Seattle and Philadelphia, and in states like California with large populations of illegal aliens who get shepherded to the polls to vote for a certain party that shall remain nameless.
8. Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi: Bookworm Room ms. Bookworm writes a fascinating piece on one of the icons of Roman womanhood, and makes some cogent points about feminism and the wife and mother as the cornerstone of society.
9. Eternity Road- working: A Midweek Rumination Francis reflects about the nature of work and its meaning.
10. Cheat Seeking Missiles: Lt. Col. Steele's Tragedy Laer has a great post this week about the Shakesperean tragedy of Lt. Colonel William Steele, charged with nine court martial offenses, including aiding the enemy and fraternizing with the daughter of a detainee while he commanded a military police detachment at an American detention facility near Baghdad.
11. Big Lizards: “"And Why the Sea is Boiling Hot, and Whether Pigs Have Wings"”Dafydd Ab Hugh fulminates about speeches by John Edwards and Hillary Clinton attacking President Bush on Iraq.
12. The Education Wonks: Wonkitorial: The Latest From Babylon, D.C. EdWonk examines the case of the `DC Madam'.
That's this week's lineup..enjoy!
