Iran’s Revolutionary Guard In Secret Iraq Talks With US
The Bush Administration is now reportedly in secret talks with Iran's Revolutionary Guard over Iraq, just a short time after officially declaring it a terrorist organization.
Major-General Mohammed Ali Jafari is the commander of the Revolutionary Guards and is on the US `most wanted' list for terrorism, but he was able to travel from Tehran and pass through US security checkpoints on his way into the fortified enclave that contains the American embassy and Iraqi ministries without a problem.
The talks come in the wake of the Iranian probe of our naval defenses in the Persian Gulf and a recent sharp increase in IEDs and arms shipments to Iran's proxy Shiite militias in Iraq like Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army.
Regular members of Joshua's Army already have a pretty good idea of what's going on, and it's fairly obvious that the Bush Administration is prepared to deal with Iran and with Syria in exchange for quiet in Iraq. The deeply flawed NIE telling the Iranians that a US military option and even increased sanctions were off the table and the red carpet treatmet the Syrians got at Annapolis was the first part of the arrangement.
The strategy behind this is to barter behind the scenes with Iran and Syria for stability and quiet in Iraq on the one hand while shoring up an `anti-Iran' coalition of Sunni autocrats like the Saudis on the other, bribing them with arms and trade deals and with increased pressure on the hated Israelis.
This futile attempt to pit the Arab Sunnis against the Persian Shiites for our benefit is doomed to failure.
The Sunnis and Shiites historically have almost always put aside their differences when it comes to jihad against the infidel.
You know, during the Cold War the US had a hotline with the Soviet Union, and that undoubtedly helped to prevent some incidents. Perhaps we should start a communications channel with Iran, just so we're on the same page. If nothing else, it will greatly reduce the risk of misunderstandings and political blunders, which are the real causes of war.
ReplyDeleteHi Nazar,
ReplyDeleteAn information channel is one thing. This is a negotiation, and not one in our favor.
Please don't make th emistake of confusing the Soviets, who wanted to conquer and survive with medieval Islamists who actually believe that violence and chaos will speed the arrival of the12th Hidden Imam.
Ayatollah Khomeni himself said that if it is necessary to sacrifice Iran to bring th eadvent of th e12th Imam, so be it.
