Watcher's Council Nominations, 7/02/08
Every week, the Watcher's Council members nominate two posts each, one of their own and one from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week's Council nominations can be found at the site of our fearless leader, the infamous Watcher of Weasels
Do take the time to check out the non-Council links available at the Watcher's site as well - they're always worthwhile.
So here's this week's Council lineup...enjoy!
Iraq Sues Over Oil-For-Food... And There's an Obama Connection Joshuapundit - Thanks to the Saddam regime and their willing enablers in the UN and the corporate world, the Oil-For-Food scandal became of the largest and most egregious scandals in history.
The Iraqi government is suing some of these people in US District court in Manhattan claiming they cheated the Iraqi people out of the benefits of the $67 billion "all of which were directly translatable into food, medicine and other humanitarian goods that were supposed to reach the Iraqi people."
And yes, there is indeed a strong Obama connection with a couple of names who will undoubtedly be part of the proceedings as this progresses....
Obama's 8 Years As State Legislator Makes Him Better Qualified The Colossus of Rhodey - Hube takes on a particularly idiotic Obama shill writing in Newsweak.
More On Jokes Done With Mirrors -This week, Callimachus has a fun post that explores the nature of jokes and humor. Here's my own definition of one thing that makes people laugh, Cal, cribbed from none other than Charlie Chaplin: "Someone else's misfortune."
This Deal Keep Getting Worse and Worse Soccer Dad - This week Soccer Dad has the courage to look at a story that I've been trying to force myself to write about for three days now, the Israeli government's agreeing to trade live murderers in their custody for the bodies of two dead Israeli soldiers kidnapped and murdered by Hezbollah.
I'm going to suppress my gag reflex and post my own ideas on why this is a dangerously bad idea shortly, but Soccer Dad has an excellent take on this.
The Supreme Court: Originalism, Activism, and America's Future Wolf Howling - GW has an authoritative look at the two trends in thinking on the US Supreme Court, the idea of sticking as close as possible to the intent of the original Founding Fathers as opposed to stretching that intent to conform with a political agenda...in a sense, legislating from the bench.
The Rising Price of Oil: How High Is Up? The Glittering Eye - Dave's entry this week looks at the dynamics of rising oil prices and where they might lead.
Surreal Logic *UPDATED* Bookworm Room - Ms. Bookworm writes about ex-general and Obama surrogate Wesley Clark's attack on John Mccain's military record as a qualification for leadership. In yet another example of how great minds think alike, like me she picked out the essential straw man in the concerted attacks by Clark, Jim Webb and others....that getting shot down in combat by itself is no qualification for office, but the way McCain behaved after he was shot down, and the way he conducted himself under extreme adversity is, because it tells us a great deal about his character.
Fireworks and the Nanny State The Razor - With the Fourth coming up, Scott muses on fireworks laws and Big Government....and yes, it brought back memories of the time somebody ( I'll never tell) rolled a cherry bomb into a stall in the boy's bathroom while the school bully was enjoying the use of the facilities and a quiet smoke inside.
The memory of that kid running out of the bathroom screaming at the top of his lungs with his pants hanging around his ankles undoubtedly still gives a few adults who were there a chuckle...although not me, of course. Never me.
Patriotism Hillbilly White Trash - Lemuel looks at Obama's recent speech on patriotism, given while his surrogates were attempting to demean John McCain's service and draws some conclusions about what Obama had to say and what patriotism is.
Witch Hunt For "Obama's A Muslim" E-Mailer Cheat Seeking Missiles - Laer looks at the hunt to try and track down who first started e-mails about Barack Obama being a Muslim. I can't imagine what the Obama campaign is planning on doing if they find out, especially since the e-mails likely originated from several sources.
First of all, Obama may not be a Muslim today, but he obviously was at one time, according to his half brother and numerous people that knew him in Indonesia.Yet he's gone to considerable lengths to deny this and obfuscate, even to the point of forcing Muslim supporters wearing hijabs out of the camera angle at his events. Why? What is he afraid people might find out?
Oh, and by the way, Laer just redesigned his site..go check out his killah new look!
Principal Confirms Kids Sipped Margaritas The Education Wonks - EdWonk reports on a little mix-up ( literally) in the school cafeteria.
Impeach Anthony Kennedy Rhymes With Right - Greg lays out his rationale for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Kennedy based on his rulings on a couple of recent cases.
