Watcher's Council Nominations, 1/14/09

The Watcher's Council is a group of some of the most incisive blogs in the`sphere. Every week, the members nominate two posts each, one of their own and one from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council.

So, let's see what we have this week....and do check out the Watcher's takedown of the global warming scam given extra oomph by a few hours of shoveling snow!

COUNCIL

Joshuapundit - The Hidden Story On Gaza - Ask yourself....why, after all this time did the troika of Olmert, Livni and Barak choose now to go after Hamas? Why did Hamas deliberately provoke Israel? Having watched Israel decimate its fighters and put Gaza City under siege, why has Hamas refused a ceasefire? And what is the end game likely to look like? Now that a few more pieces of the puzzle have revealed themselves, here's how I see the pieces fitting together....

The Glittering Eye - Wealth - Dave Schuler ruminates on the nature of wealth and how one achieves it

The Colossus of Rhodey - ABC’s ‘Ugly Americans’: Obnoxious George Bush Supporters - Hube writes about a cute lil' piece on ABC, using actors to portray the mythical 'Ugly Americans' abroad. Actually, to anyone who's been, the rudest and most obnoxious travelers as a group are probably the Germans, with Brits a close second when they're attending a soccer match overseas.

Mere Rhetoric - Media Outlets Can’t Get Over The Tactical Brilliance Of Hamas’s Use Of Human Shields - Omri does a fine take down of certain media outlets coverage of the Gaza War. As I've said before, the one thing Arafat did that was smart was to pick the right enemy.

The Provocateur - Some Perspective on the Great Loan Modification Scam - Mike has an interesting piece on the effects of loan modification, a legal scam currently in fashion. Like the Federal expansion of FHA limits to essentially buy out the banks for poor quality subprime loans they made, this will undoubtedly come back to haunt us.

Bookworm Room - Looking for Insults - Ms. Bookworm weighs in on the enormous attention given to a three-year-old video of Prince Harry making a few mild anti-Muslim remarks in the context of his army service..and compares it with the British media's silence on the most outrageously anti-Semitic remarks by British Muslims.

Right Truth - America Said NO - This week Debbie writes on the refusal of the Bush Administration to aid Israel in attacking Iran's nuclear facilities. For what it's worth, Debbie and any other interested parties can find out exactly why the Bush Administration pursued this policy by clicking on the appropriate link within my submission this week..and yes, there is a connection between the Gaza War and Iran's quest for nuclear weapons.

Soccer Dad - Both sides now - Soccer Dad examines the New York Time's coverage of the Gaza War and fisks the public editor's attempt to whitewash their obvious bias. To be honest, I'm not sure why the Times even bothers with trying to present a facade of presenting neutral coverage of the issues.

Rhymes With Right - Representation By The Numbers - Greg observes ethnic politics at his local level and questions their utility. Obviously, as long as people have the kind of inordinate tribal loyalty that pushes them to vote for members of their group for mostly an accident of birth, we will continue to see the ethnic politics game played. Whether America could work harder to assimilate certain groups and mitigate that factor is another thing entirely.

Cheat-Seeking Missiles - As BHO Channels FDR, Worries Grow - Laer notes with alarm Barack Obama is using Franklin Delano Roosevelt as a model in his attempts to manipulate the public debate and the perception of his own policies .

A major difference - Roosevelt actually had substantial experience in executive government and in national defence that gave him an insight into the way government and the economy work that Obama lacks.

The Razor - Three Shocks For New Doctors - Scott continues his examination of the medical profession with an article on the dollar and cents challenges new doctors face.
