Watcher's Council Nominations, 4/01/09
Welcome to the April Fools edition of the Watcher's Council...
The Watcher's Council is a group of some of the most incisive blogs in the`sphere. Every week, the members nominate two posts each, one of their own and one from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council.
So, let's see what we have this week....and do check out the Watcher's fine intro essay on the first months of the Obama administration...
COUNCIL
Joshuapundit - Why I’m Happy The NY Times Published An Anti-Semitic Cartoon - I'm referring, of course, to a nifty bit of Jew hatred drawn by Pat Oliphant, who as I point out has a long history of this sort of thing. Why am I happy the Times and other papers published it without a moments hesitation and what does it tell us? Click on the link and find out.
Soccer Dad - Now he tells us - Soccer Dad dissects yet another fraudulent claim of IDF 'war crimes' during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza.
The Colossus of Rhodey - Why we should care about North Korea’s missile - Hube's interesting post details the dangers of an EMP, where an explosion is detonated in the startosphere with the idea of destroying a nations' electronic technology. I would point out that not only North Korea but Iran now or soon will have the satellite cpability of doing this..at a time when the Obama administration is planning deep cuts in our military, especially in missile defense.
Of course, one sure-fire way of preventing this would be to knock any satellites out of the sky and do a protracted raid on suspected nuclear facilities and infrastructure in rogue states like North Korea and Iran before they become a problem...but that's just my silly, politically incorrect way of handling such matters. The policy of Carthago delenda est certainly worked for the Romans though, as I recall...
The Razor - The Imaginary Leader - That's how Scott refers to the present occupant of the White House. Unfortunately, he's all too real.
The Glittering Eye - What’s the Niche for GM? - Dave Schuler asks an interesting question this week - now that GM has become Government Motors instead of General Motors, exactly what market niche are they going to try to compete in? Or to put it another way, are you in favor of the Feds subsidizing the UAW on your dime in a company that's unlikely to ever turn a profit?
I would differ with him only on the major source of GM's problems, which was not necessarily bad management. There's a direct correlation between the degree of unionization and the companies that are successfully making cars versus those who aren't. And in addition, aside from overly lucrative union contracts, th ecompanies that are in trouble have years of union entitlements and lucrative pensions to deal with...a factor that the Feds might have done a lot more good subsidizing than simply throwing billins at the companies without solving the underlying problems.
Rhymes With Right - A Case That Ought To Be Easy To Decide - Greg takes on an unreasonable search and seizure case involving - get this - a thirteen-year -old girl who was strip searched in an effort to find some non-existent advil!
Right Truth - Lessons from South Africa - The news from what was once a fairly prosperous westernized country continues to get owrse, and Debby Hamilton has the story.
The Provocateur - Chris Dodd’s Unique, Brazen and Dangerous Corruption - Mike takes a good look at the antics of the Senator from CountryWide and AIG.
Bookworm Room - Is Barack Obama Evil -Well, is he? Ms. Bookworm examines the evidence.
