If Obama is capable of holding border security hostage for amnesty votes, why wouldn't he create amnesty for illegal aliens by decree? Via Michelle Malkin , Numbers USA has the story:
Several Senators have learned of a possible plan by the Obama Administration that would provide a mass Amnesty for the nation's 11-18 million illegal aliens. Led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), eight Senators addressed a letter to the President asking for answers to questions about a plan that would allow DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to provide an amnesty if they can't secure enough votes for a bill in the Senate.
The letter that was sent to Pres. Obama earlier today asks the President for clarification on the use of deferred action or parole for illegal aliens. The executive actions are typically used in special cases and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but if 60 votes can't be secured in the Senate to pass a mass Amnesty, the Administration may use the discretionary actions as an alternative.
Here is the text of the letter signed by Sens. Grassley, Hatch (R-Utah), Vitter (R-La.), Bunning (R-Ky.), Chambliss (R-Ga.), Isakson (R-Ga.), Inhofe (R-Okla.), and Cochran (R-Miss.).
Dear President Obama:
We understand that there’s a push for your Administration to develop a plan to unilaterally extend either deferred action or parole to millions of illegal aliens in the United States. We understand that the Administration may include aliens who have willfully overstayed their visas or filed for benefits knowing that they will not be eligible for a status for years to come. We understand that deferred action and parole are discretionary actions reserved for individual cases that present unusual, emergent or humanitarian circumstances. Deferred action and parole were not intended to be used to confer a status or offer protection to large groups of illegal aliens, even if the agency claims that they look at each case on a “case-by-case” basis.
While we agree our immigration laws need to be fixed, we are deeply concerned about the potential expansion of deferred action or parole for a large illegal alien population. While deferred action and parole are Executive Branch authorities, they should not be used to circumvent Congress’ constitutional authority to legislate immigration policy, particularly as it relates to the illegal population in the United States.
The Administration would be wise to abandon any plans for deferred action or parole for the illegal population. Such a move would further erode the American public’s confidence in the federal government and its commitment to securing the borders and enforcing the laws already on the books.
We would appreciate receiving a commitment that the Administration has no plans to use either authority to change the current position of a large group of illegal aliens already in the United States, and ask that you respond to us about this matter as soon as possible.
Would Obama try an end run around Congress like this? Absolutely. Like his lawsuit against the State of Arizona, it's designed to endear the Democrats to the pro-Amnesty constituency. The lawsuit may be tossed out of court and the Executive order might be overturned successfully by legislation if the Republicans take back Congress, but this is about political positioning and branding.
And the will of the people be damned.

Executive order or not, the issue still remains what to do with the illegal aliens in this country. While most of the country does not want to reward illegality (me included) the question remains how do you round up all these people and send them packing? I think that it is impossible. Yes, you could go after each and every employer and I think those who hire these people and therefore commit tax fraud should spend a very ong time in prison. That being said, as long as this issue goes unresolved what we have in this country is a perpetual underclass akin to a slave class.Don't whine and say that they could go home. Most cannot either becuase they are bholdent to despicable characters, or they have no money or quite frankly their family back home would starve. These people are preyed upon by the worst in our society and they are trafficked in despicable ways. The fact that administraitons in the past have not done their job does not negate the human question that is presented before us. What do we as a nation do?Who are we as Americans? It is time for us to answer the question and then implement the resolution. TIme to grow a backbone America. What is it going to be? Have the fortitude to send illegals back to their home countries including their American born children (don't go all wooly about anchor babies either. Those born in this country no matter the status of their parents are as American as all the other children born here. You cannot punish the children for the crimes of their parents- SCOTUS)or acknowledge that they are here and find a way to incorpate them into society, have them pay taxes and take responsibility for their own existence. Oh and lets not forget when we resolve the illegals issue, we can go after the really really really bad people and not those that just want to earn a living for their families.
ReplyDeleteToo bad this country is set on stupid. I predicted this would happen in 2008. Juan Barry Peron grants the illegals amnesty, ACORN registers them to vote, along with their minor children, and Barry wins a second term. And don't be shocked when this happens well before the midterm elections. How else is Harry Reed supposed to keep his seat? Watching the impotent Republicans flailing their arms like beached walrus is just as sad. Ooo...they wrote a letter...I bet Barry is soooo scared. Someone needs to find these gentlemen their cojones before the precious little of this country that still resembles America is flushed down the crapper.
ReplyDeleteWell IP,
ReplyDeleteHere's how I see it.
There are lots of people who want to come to America. There is a huge snafu in this entire process, mostly the legacy of Ted Kennedy.
What we're dealing with here is people who jumped the line to get in simply because they could, and while I sympathize, it doesn't make it fair or right. Are Hispanics more 'worthy' of compassion than people who want to come here from Thailand, Vietnam Russia or the Congo because they want a better life?
Nor can we afford to continue to subsidize the Mexican government by paying for what it should be doing for its own people.
Or to continue to encourage what amounts to the Quebec-ization of part of America because the Left, which essentially hates American culture wants Manuel Labor the gardener and Delores the Maid to stay in their low wage place,( and continue to vote Democrat) so it avoids any organized attempt to assimilate them.
Ain't no ulpans ( let alone IDF type service)in the USA!
As for trafficking and exploitation, yes it happens. That's generally the result when you make a decision to engage in illegal activity - you end up consorting with criminals and can end up at their mercy. There are lots of people who ended up getting mugged and/or raped when they thought they were scoring narcotics.
Two other factors you're not considering are (a)the fact that giving these people amnesty will simply encourage new waves to keep coming, just as the amnestia Teddy Kennedy got Reagan to authorize did. And (b), we live in a post 9/11 world and other people besides illegal aliens are using our porous borders for their own purposes.
Is there a just and humane solution? You bet. The outlines are here but I'll go into more detail if you need me to.
Regards,
Rob
