Two interesting indications that the tide may be turning in Germany.
Blogpal and ace reporter Benjamin Weinthal reports on a grassroots movement based in the city of Mönchengladbach to prevent a local radical Islamist group called “Invitation to Paradise” from building a huge madrassah there. The Verfassungsschutz, Germany’s equivalent of the FBI or Scotland Yard has been monitoring the Salafist group for some time.
Just last week in response to a citizen's initiative, a court barred “Invitation to Paradise” from using a building as a mosque and from building the Islamic school they had planned.
Usually, these facilities are billed as 'multi-cultural centers (sound familiar?). That's the same dodge used by the Hamburg-based mosque al-Quds, a meeting place for Mohammed Atta and the 9/11 hijackers that remained open for nine years afterwards even when it became obvious that it was recruiting and training center for German Muslims later found fighting in places like Afghanistan.
Hamburg remains a hotbed of Islamist activity, and there is an Iranian connection as Benjamin details.
In other related news, Germany apparently has a new runaway bestseller, written by prominent German banker Thilo Sarrazin.
Entitled "Deutschland schafft sich ab: Wie wir unser Land aufs Spiel setzen" ( Germany Does itself In: How We Put Our Country At Risk, Sarrazin's opus deals with subjects that have been mostly taboo in Germany in the past, the effects of Muslim immigration.
Sarrazin says Europe's economy is overwhelmed by poorly educated, badly integrated and "unproductive" Muslim immigrants and their offspring, who consume social welfare benefits far beyond their financial contribution.
"If I want to hear the muezzin's call to prayer, then I'll go to the Orient," he says, saying that allowing in millions of "guest workers" in the 1960s and 1970s was a "gigantic error."
The book is selling so well that the publisher is struggling to keep up with the orders.Online retailer Amazon.de has a massive 207 reader reviews on its website, with the average score 4.4 stars out of a possible five.
Even more interesting, a survey published last Sunday indicated that if he set up his own new political party, almost one in five (18 percent) would vote for him.
Interesting trends indeed.
Thats nice to see that gras roots anti-Islamism is gearing up in Germany. I sure wish it would gear up here in America.
