That's got to be one of the most eloquent quotes I've ever seen!! Thank you for sharing this. For a long, long time, I've been trying to express this sentiment to the various peaceniks I've run accross over the years but I've never been able to express this quite as eloquently as Mr. Jefferson did. The best I've been able to do is to point out the quote "if you want peace, prepare for war." Not sure who actually said this but it is so well repeated that no one pays attention. Perhaps this one will drive the point accross. Perhaps not. I'm not sure any thing gets through to peaceniks.

The bottom line is today the United States faces far greater foreign threats from Russia, China, and Islamic terrorists than the United States of Mr. Jefferson's day ever faced. Its high time we started working on coherent plans to confront this. This timeless piece of wisdom from Mr. Jefferson is a great place to start.

  2. Several people have been attributed on the peace/war quote - including Churchill, Roman General and strategist Vegetius and the Greek General Alcibiades.

Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum ( therefore, one desiring peace, let that one prepare themself for war ) . Vegetius in Epitoma Rei Militaris ( or Epitome Rei Militaris -- the ' e ' harks back to the original Greek ; the ' a ' is a Latinisation ). I could have sworn that I had addressed this here once, but memory is a slippery slope. Ciao !

PS : found it ! Monday, July 05, 2010 Joshuapundit article & commentary ' How Obama Kills Jobs ' comments section, comment # 6, part two. ( My comment really doesn't add anything, so it's not really worth searching for in its own right ; however, jp's article & commentary re White Castle are worth re-reading in their own right ! ) Ciao !
