Dr. Peter Rhee on Gabrielle Giffords: 'Prognosis For Survival 100%'

Dr.Peter Rhee, head of the trauma department at University of Arizona medical Center did a press briefing a short while ago and is increasingly optimistic about Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' condition.

“As a physician I’m going to get into a lot of trouble for this, but her prognosis for survival is 100 percent, as far as it being short term,” Rhee said. “Hopefully she’ll live to be 95 years old.”

Dr. Michael Lemole, the chief of neurosurgery at the hospital, also told reporters that Giffords continues to be able to respond to simple commands and remains on a respirator only in order to “protect her airway.”

“She’s holding her own,” Lemole said. “We’ve been able to back off on some of that sedation and in fact she’s generating her own breaths. She’s breathing on her own.”

“She’s going to take her recovery at her own pace. I’m very encouraged by the fact that she’s done so well.”

The shooter, Jared Lee Loughner was arraigned in a Phoenix courtroom yesterday, said he understood the charges against him and wanted to be represented by the public defender. However, attorney Judy Clarke, who represented Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski wasn't about to let that kind of publicity and media attention go to waste and has agreed to take the case.
