The Federal Bureau of Investigation has made a major change in what it considers it's primary mission:
The change was first noticed this year by Kel McClanahan, a Washington-based national security lawyer.
McClanahan noticed the change while reviewing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from the FBI and the FBI fact sheet accompanies every FOIA response.
This apparently reflects a noticeable change in agency policy in the last few years. Investigations of white collar crime, kidnapping and other federal offenses and an increase is counterterrorism and surveillance. In fact, according to a 2010 Inspector's General report, between 2001 and 2009, the FBI doubled the amount of agents concentrating on counterterrorism.
Needless to say, the emphasis on counterterrorism and national security reduces FBI manpower and resources available to fight crime. There's also the problem of multiple agencies like the NSA and DHS duplicating the FBI's efforts and getting in each others way...which was supposed to be what establishing the Department of Homeland Security was supposed to be about in the first place, wasn't it?
At least the FBI is finally being honest about it.
