Watcher's Council Nominations, 01/09/08

Every week, the Watcher's Council members nominate two posts each, one from the Council members and one from outside for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week's Council nominations can be found at the site of our fearless leader, the infamous Watcher of Weasels

Do take the time and check out the non-Council links..they are always rewarding.

1. JOSHUAPUNDIT: Major Andrew Olmsted, R.I.P. A tribute and a few remarks on my part regarding Major Andrew Olmsted, a blogpal who was killed in Iraq this past week.

2. Done With Mirrors:Growth Potential Callimachus looks at the presidential candidates and comes up with an interesting criterion for selection to the office..their potential for growth and change. I would only respond that it's rather a lot to depend on in these circumstances.

3. Soccer Dad:Getting A "Clue" This week Soccer Dad takes on an impossible task..trying to wend his way through the outright lies and obfuscation peddled by the dinosaur media on Israel and the Middle East conflict.Tellingly, he likens it to a game of `Clue' which indeed it closely resembles.

4. The Glittering Eye: The Cop On The Beat This week, Dave writes about the dismay and anger in some quarters regarding America's position as `cop of the world' and makes the shrewd observation that there's nothing stopping petulant Europeans from assuming a share of the load except their willingness to pay the price to do so....and that until thne, any cop was better than none.

John Bolton made much the same point to a snotty reporter from Der Spiegel, suggesting that since the EU keeps telling the US they want equal status as a superpower, they could start by practicing on Russia.

5. Bookworm Room: Death And The Moonbat In her essay this week, Ms. Bookworm looks at an interesting topic - the attitude toward death and the afterlife from the standpoint of the secular Left as opposed to Islam and evangelicals and how it affects their perception of life, honor and sacrifice. I think she's on to something here.

6. Rhymes With Right:Major Papers Oppose Justice For Murderers Greg takes umbrage at the dinosaur media's shrill opposition to capital punishment as the Supreme Court debates the issue in an important case.

7.Colossus of Rhodey:Closed Loop Or Branching Stream? Hube, our resident Sci-Fi expert writes about different styles of time travel used in books and movies. Reminds me of a Simson's `Treehouse of Horror' episode I once saw!

8. Cheat Seeking Missiles:Honor Killings? What Honor Killings? Here, Laer writes about the sad case of an Egyptian man who killed his two young daughters in Dallas for being `too western' and the dinosaur media's refusal to label it as a hate crime or even connect it with Islam.

Laer, old buddy, if Christians were perpetrating this, I guarantee you it would be treated very differently.

I'm much more interested in how America's Muslims view these activities.

9. The Education Wonks: Dixville Notch This! Edwonk doesn't like our present primary system...nope, he doesn't. Please see my comments under Right Wing Nuthouse on Rick's entry.

10. Wolf Howling: Britain's Prosecution of The Blogger Lionheart for Criticism of Islam GW writes this week on a case in Britain where a blogger is being prosecuted for `stirring up racial hatred' merely for having the temerity to comment on the dangers of radical Islam. Aside from the idiocy of considering this `racial hatred'
(Islam is not a `race' per se)one wonders if the chill over free speech in Europe and Britain will spread to America as people like the Saudis use their cash clout to gain more power and influence and quash any criticism.

11.Right Wing Nuthouse: The Cotton Candy Candidacy Rick likewise has some major differences with our primary system, particularly with New Hampshire.

Unfortunately, like most pundits, he based part of that on the idea that the Granite State was embracing Barack Obama. He really should have listened to JoshuaPundit's own political expert Weekend Monkey, who got it right on New Hampshire for both parties and hasn't missed yet.

New Hampshire and Iowa may not be all that representative of the US as a whole, But I think they're valuable because of the opportunities for `retail politics'in a small arena..kind of like seeing the Rolling Stones or U2 in a small club with th ewarts exposed rather than at the local hockey rink over a video screen.

12. Big Lizards: Nix On Negative Nomenclature Dafydd likewise writes about his take on the campaign.

That's this week's lineup..enjoy!
