Hezbollah Officially Takes Over Lebanon
The new Lebanese government took over today, based on the deal reached between the factions in Qatar earlier this year.
What's left of the anti-Syria/Hezbollah March 14 movement headed by Fouad Siniora holds 16 ministerial portfolios in the new Lebanese government. Hezbollah, the official opposition holds 11 portfolios which gives them the veto power over anything the Lebanese government wants to do, and Hezbollah ally President Michel Suleiman appointed the remaining three three ministers to the new cabinet.
The new government is expected to last until the middle of 2009,when new elections are supposed to be held. I wouldn't bet on it,or at least not on anything approaching what we'd think of as a real election.
With Hezbollah essentially in charge, Basher Assad no longer needs to have any worries about the proposed UN tribunal on the murder of Ex Lebanese PM Rafik Hasriri or any of the other figures in parliament, journalism or public life who were liquidated in the Syrian's own version of Arab democracy..and Lebanon will become a colony of Syria and Iran.
