Israel And Iran - Dancing With Armageddon

In the past few days, there have been major high level efforts by the Obama Administration and the British government to talk Israel out of pre-emptive strike on Iran's rogue nuclear facilities.

President Obama's National Security Adviser Tom Donilon failed in three days of talks with Israeli PM Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Barak Ehud and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz to convince them to give sanctions and negotiations more time to work.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague delivered the same message to Israel. In a BBC interview, he said Britain was focusing on pressuring Iran through diplomatic means.

"I don't think a wise thing at this moment is for Israel to launch a military attack on Iran," he said. "I think Israel like everyone else in the world should be giving a real chance to the approach we have adopted on very serious economic sanctions and economic pressure and the readiness to negotiate with Iran."

The back story is very different.

The Israelis are livid over what they see as President Obama's betrayal in starting - again- to engage with Iran in back channel diplomacy in exchange for the U.S. and the EU postponing sanctions until July, with the likelihood of further postponements in exchange for more talks. The Israelis had already agreed to hold off to give sanctions time to work, only to find out later that President Obama was using the waiver Congress gave him in the sanctions legislation to postpone any meaningful action.

This movie has played out many times before in the over 7 years or so the West has known about Iran's nuclear program, with 'talks' spinning into months while the regime simply buys time. The Iranians have no intention of seriously being diverted from making nuclear weapons, because they know that's where the regime's ultimate security lies. They've taken note of how differently President Obama has reacted to Kim Il Sung North Korea and Moamar Khaddaffi in Libya.

The new proposal the Iranians are now taking their time to study allows them to continue enriching uranium to 5% in any quantity, provided they promise not to build an Iranian nuclear weapon.

While they're studying the matter, the mullahs are upgrading and greatly expanding the number of centrifuges at Iran's Fordo underground facility near the city of Qom to allow them to to convert their 5% uranium to weapons grade uranium in a matter of days.

This was the backdrop behind PM Netanyahu's remarks in Cyprus on February 15, where he blasted both Iran and by extension, the Obama Administration, saying that sanctions “haven’t worked” and that a regime which attacks diplomats having nuclear weapons “is something of enormous concern for the United States and for Israel.”

According to what I'm hearing from several sources, the discussions with Donilon were fairly strained. The Israelis see this new back channel proposal to Iran from the Obama Administration as a clear violation of guarantees made to Israel regarding Iran and sanctions, especially since it allows Iran to continue nuclear enrichment as well as the hardening and dispersal of its nuclear facilities. Once the talks are underway, the Israelis understand that they can again be spun out for months, and that there would be no way of stopping Iran's progress towards weaponization during the negotiations until it was too late for Israel to do anything about what they correctly regard as an existential threat.

Netanyahu is headed for the United States to meet with President Obama on March 5th to discuss the matter further.Given that it's election time in America, Netanyahu isn't going to be deliberately insulted like he was the first time he came here, but I doubt Netanyahu has any illusions about President Obama's feelings about him and about Israel. Aside from trashing previous agreements with Israel, demanding they retreat to indefensible borders, telling them they have no right to their religious shrines , threatening an aid cutoff, and instituting what amounted to a de facto arms embargo during the early part of President Obama's term, they've watched as the Obama Administration has actively encouraged and enabled the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Libya.

While both men will attempt to keep things civil, especially when the cameras are on them, the meeting is not likely to be an amicable one.

Netanyahu has absolutely no reason to trust anything President Obama says, and he has that in common with many of our allies, who have their own reasons to regard this president as weak and unreliable.

Could the Israelis pull off a strike? As I've discussed on this site several times, there no doubt that they could. And the damage to Iran's nuclear capabilities would likely be far more than merely putting things off for a couple of years if it's done properly.

http://www.sitesatlas.com/Maps/Maps/MEast-pol.gif

The obstacles frequently cited are the sheer distance involved, the amount of planes needed, the need for mid-air refueling, the tough Iranian air defenses and the danger of retaliatory strikes from Iran and from Iran's proxies Hezbollah and Hamas.

A couple of years ago I analyzed what an Israeli strike on Iran might look like, and it was interesting to see an echo of some of that thinking recently from Hans Rühle, a leading German security expert who was head of the planning department of the German Defense Ministry between 1982-1988.

In an article in Die Welt, Rühle stated that in his opinion, a well planned Israeli attack could significantly set back Iran’s nuclear weapons program by perhaps a decade or more.

I personally see that as a bit optimistic, but at least five years is a certainty and a much longer time is certainly possible depending on what gets hit.

Rühle and I agree that rather than a huge air armada of over a hundred planes, the Israelis would use smaller groups of 25 or 30 planes, each armed with two GBU-28 bunker busters. I think the Israelis would likely proceed a strike with a cyber attack to blind and confuse Iran's radar and missile defenses as they did in Syria. Even though the Syrians had something Iran doesn't, the advanced Russian S - 300 missile defense systems, the Israelis were able to blind and baffle them easily. The Israelis might even possibly mount an EMP attack using a Jericho III missile, which would destroy Iranian communications, computer networks and electronic controls.

The Israelis have one large advantage in an air attack they didn't have before. The most direct route planes would likely take to their targets in Iran is over Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The Iraqis have no air defenses at this time and now that U.S. forces have withdrawn from Iraq, the U.S. has no part in defending Iraq's air space, so the road is wide open.

As for the Saudis, they would have no objections whatsoever to Israel taking out Shi'ite Iran's nuclear program. They've already signaled as much.

Using a smaller number of planes would allow greater flexibility in mid air refueling from Israel's fleet of 9 U.S. made tankers, and also allow attacks to be made in waves against specific targets while other planes refuel. Rühle suspects that the Israelis have configured additional planes as tankers. I know for a fact that Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is currently working on converting a recently-acquired Boeing 707 for use as a super tanker, with delivery scheduled to the IDF by mid year. Never underestimate the Israeli genius for improvisation.

Nor is Israel's arsenal limited to F-15's and F-16's armed with bunker busters. The Israelis have state-of -the art drones available like the jumbo jet sized Eitan, which can carry a one ton payload and fly for 48 straight hours, their fleet of nuclear-capable Dolphin subs, each capable of firing Jericho II and III missiles with great precision and their land based Jericho III's with a range capable of reaching Iranian targets.

Rühle sees the primary nuclear targets as the nuclear plant at Natanz, the conversion facility in Isfahan, the heavy water reactor at Arak and the major weapons and munitions sites in Parchin. In addition, he notes the deep underground enrichment facility at Fordow near Qom and Iran’s nuclear plant at Bushehr, on the Persian Gulf:

Rühle writes that surveillance “information about Natanz is solid,“ adding that the “project has been observed from satellites and from the location from 'Israeli tourists.'”

He added that Israel strongest bunker buster bombs GBU-28 could destroy the roof of the facility. If the damage is not sufficient, a second GBU-28 could be launched to complete the aim of destruction.

According to Rühle, Israel’s successful obliteration of the Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007 laid an important precedent. He writes that “many experts believe “ that strikes against Iran’s nuclear operations could set back the program 10 years, or possibly longer, based on present knowledge.

The fighter plane requirement would entail 20 F-15 machines each accompanied with two GBU-28s. He estimates that Israel’s air force has over 87 F-15 planes at its disposal. The conversion Nuclear Technology Center of Isfahan, which is largely vulnerable to attack because its buildings are not underground, could be eliminated with GBU-27 bombs. Isfahan converts the yellow cake process into uranium.

The least difficult challenge for Israel’s air force is the heavy-water reactor Arak, observes Rühle. The above-ground facility could be razed with 10 GBU-10 bombs, wrote Rühle. The strike would require 10 F- 16 fighter jets.

According to Rühle, the most difficult obstacle to destroy is the underground Fordow enrichment plant. He notes that special team forces would have to attack the facility.

The alternative would be to strike the tunnel openings with GBU-28 bombs to plug the entry points for a period of time.

The complex Parchin site remains beyond the International Atomic Energy Agency inspections and it is unclear how many bombs it would take to destroy the over 100 buildings, many of which are buried underground. Nuclear warheads are believed to be worked on in the Parchin plant.

Most people I've talked to in a position to know these things agree with Rühle's analysis of the targets involved. I would also add that the use of tactical nukes would make sites like Parchin and Fordow uninhabitable, let alone unusable for quite some time. And a strike on Iran's refineries and oil infrastructure along the Persian Gulf and especially at the oil terminus at Kharg Island would insure a long period of freedom from an Iranian threat because it would eliminate Iran's abilities to finance these sort of toys for many years, and perhaps even involve regime change as Iran's economy goes into free fall. Call it the ultimate 'sanction' if you like.

Would Iran retaliate? Certainly they would. But there's a better than even chance their retaliation would be limited to targets in the Gulf. As I've discussed previously, Hezbollah and Hamas have their own compelling reasons why they might choose not to attack Israel at this time on Iran's orders. Hezbollah in particular might choose to hold its fire so as not to bring on itself the sort of loss of political capital it experienced in Lebanon after the last war from an Israeli retaliation. In 2006, the Israelis largely held off from hitting Lebanese targets in areas not controlled by Hezbollah, but now that Hezbollah is a controlling element in Lebanon those restrictions aren't going to apply in the future, as the Israeli government has already made quite plain. Hamas might also not want to endanger its Gaza fiefdom for Iran, especially since relations between Hamas and Iran aren't what they once were since Hamas decided not to send fighters to Syria to back Assad against their fellow Sunnis.

The chief area of Iranian retaliation would likely be attempts to destroy shipping and close off the Persian Gulf. The U.S. has already made it quite clear that any attempt by Iran to do so with be a red line and bring America's Navy into the picture, with fairly drastic results for Iran.

Iran does have Shahab missiles capable of hitting Israeli territory with conventional warheads, but there are doubts about whether their expertise in targeting these missiles is sufficient to do major damage to Israel. In any event, there's sufficient reason for Israel not to wait until Iran's technology improves. Whatever the cost now, it would be infinitely greater with an Iranian regime armed with nuclear weapons.

What Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu will likely relay to the president when they meet early next is a message that if the U.S. doesn't do something to curtail Iran's ongoing nuclear weapons program, Israel will.

There's no doubt in my mind they have the capability of doing so.

Netanyahu Refuses UN Call For Renewed Building Freeze; Hundreds Of Homes In Shiloh Approved

In a refreshing change, Israeli PM Benyamin Netanyahu told UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon flatly on Wednesday that there will be no new freeze on Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria.

In a press conference after his meeting Tuesday in Jordan with King Abdullah II and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Ban had forcefully urged Netanyahu to reinstate an Israeli unilateral construction freeze in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria as a “goodwill gesture” to the Hamas-allied 'Palestinian' Authority, saying that such construction was “not helpful”. Ban did not specify for whom building hom,es was unhelpful, and needless to say, Ban had nothing to say about 'Palestinian' construction in the area.

Netanyahu refused to comply with Ban’s request, saying that any discussion regarding a renewed freeze on construction should occur as part of negotiations themselves rather than as a precondition to talks.

“This issue is part of the negotiations,” he told Ban. “It can’t be a precondition.”

In other good news, Israel gave preliminary approval on Wednesday to a plan to build 600 new homes in Shiloh in Judea. Included are retroactive approvals for 100 previously constructed homes.

Shiloh, by the way was Israel's capitol for over 400 years.

The UN’s Mideast envoy, Robert Serry, called the Israeli announcement “deplorable” and said it “moves us further away from the goal of a two-state solution.”

That's for sure.

“He was screaming, ‘Allah is great, Allah is great,’” said Nancy Haywood, passenger. “And it kind of worries you when that happens, but believe me, there were enough men to hold him down.”

And they did. Men on the plane jumped up and ran to assist the flight attendant.
“Every guy that was in my area was ready to go,” said Mark Foster, passenger. “It was not even a thought. You can tell buckles were off and people were already leaning toward the aisles.”

The men subdued the unruly passenger while the flight attendant ran to the back and retrieved plastic handcuffs and ankle cuffs.

“It almost made me cry to see the way everybody responded because the gentlemen that could help got up and helped the stewardess; she was just a little bitty thing,” said Jeanna Wisher. “What happened should have happened, everybody got up and did a part that needed to do it.”

Watcher's Council Nominations - Hail To The Chiefs Edition

Welcome to the Watcher's Council, a blogging group consisting of some of the most incisive blogs in the 'sphere, and the longest running group of its kind in existence. Every week, the members nominate two posts each, one written by themselves and one written by someone from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council. Then we vote on the best two posts, with the results appearing on Friday.

It has always saddened me that two of our greatest presidents, one who risked everything to create our beloved Republic and another who gave his all to save it should have to 'share' a day to honor them while others who arguably contributed far less have a day all to themselves to honor them because it's politically expedient. That's particularly true in my home state, where someone who was essentially a mere labor racketeer is so honored.

And let's not even mention another president born this month who in living memory saved this nation from decay and defeat by sheer force of his principles, character and personality.

This goes beyond the question of a mere day off.As I've often written, usually vis a vis the people who identify themselves as 'Palestinians', you can tell a great deal about a people by whom and what they honor and hold up as heroic.

Ah, well! To the business at hand....

Council News:

Mooch-elle's Song: 'You Load Sixteen Bags, What Do You Get - Another Vacation'...

A creative little ditty from my pal Granny Jan..via Capitalist Preservation:

You load sixteen bags what do you get
Another vacation and we're deeper in debt
I go to exotic places every three weeks
I owe my soul to Soros and the sheiks

I was born one morning with a chip on my shoulder
It only got worse as I got older
They loaded sixteen bags of Louis Vuitton
And the one percent said a job well done

You load sixteen bags what do you get
Sixteen vacations and the country in debt
Shopping at Target fools the peons
I owe my soul to Barneys and Bijans

Went to school on affirmative action
Married the president now I'm the attraction
Air Force Two is at my beck and call
16 exotic destinations in all

Does the media report? Not at all.
I owe my soul to Media Matters

Jesus, The Devil And The GOP

http://www.logoi.com/pastimages/img/demon_4.jpg

As Rick Santorum surged to become the Republican party frontrunner, I predicted that the Left and their media lackeys were going to frame him as a religious extremist nutcase. And that they'd have plenty of help from a great many things the Senator has said over the years.

The problem is not so much the demonization - that would be expected towards anyone running against our Dear Leader in 2012 - but the way it's been handled by Santorum and his campaign. And the fact that he actually is an outspoken social conservative who favors big government solutions to the issues.

Instead of saying something along the lines of 'this president wants to make this campaign about religious faith and contraception to deflect the American people from looking at his abysmal record and his mismanagement of the economy', Senator Santorum jumps in and questions the president's Christian values, calling the president’s environmental extremism representative of a “phony theology”....instead of hammering him on Solyndra and the green energy scams involving millions of taxpayer dollars doled out to deserving campaign contributors. Or going into a few details on what the president's war on coal and oil companies has done to the price of food, gas and commodities for the average American.

Even worse, after getting nailed by the media frenzy, he walked it back, saying he 'of course' wasn't really questioning Barack Obama's Christian values. After which the regime's media lackeys unearthered past video snippets of the senator doing exactly that!

Assuming he felt he had to mention theology at all, just imagine if instead of backing off he'd doubled down like this:

"I actually do question the president's values. No one who sat in Reverend Jeremiah Wright's church for two decades and listened to the bile featured there could possibly call himself a Christian, in my view. Nor would a Christian vote to deny medical care to living infants who survived an abortion, a position more extreme than even NARAL's. Or hold a luxurious Superbowl party while women, children and old people were freezing to death in Kentucky and FEMA dragged its feet for weeks .

I don't know what President Obama's religious views are, and it has no bearing on the issues of this campaign. But in my opinion, he does not reflect Christian values as I've understood them since childhood."

Of course, Rick Santorum did nothing of the kind - which is exactly why he's likely headed for defeat in the general election against the president.

Senator Santorum is a decent, likeable man with very little executive experience and apparently no real understanding of what its going to take to defeat President Obama in November. Even worse, he's essentially a big government conservative who insists on making a crusade out of cultural, religious and social issues.

'Satan has his eyes on America'? The definition of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is 'to do the morally right thing'? How religious do you have to be to board this train, and who judges?

And the fact that Senator Santorum is correct in much of what he had to say doesn't matter one bit. Moderates and even small government conservatives are going to jump off the train in droves if Rick Santorum is the nominee.

Rush Limbaugh, astute observer that he is instantly realized how bad it's going to be to try to defeat President Obama on religious values rather than his abysmal performance in the Oval Office.

Nor has Mitt Romney been doing much better of late. While he would probably do better against the president in the general, he also seems to lack the fire to take this president on in the way he's going to have to if he wants win. And he has noticeably failed to excite the base.

Again, it seems to me that the GOP movers and shakers have decided to forfeit this election, at least as far as the presidential race is concerned. They're probably figuring on the economy collapsing somewhere during Obama's second term and picking up the pieces in 2016.

Except there are a few points they're leaving out of their calculation.

First, the down ticket effect of a GOP loss means that at best, control of Congress is going to remain split between the two parties. At worst, it could mean a Democrat takeover of both Houses.

That means ObamaCare isn't going to be repealed and that President Obama will have four more years to incorporate his radical agenda. This country will be unrecognizable by 2016, and the fiscal nightmare we're facing might not even be repairable by 2016 no matter who gets into the Oval Office. You can also count on President Obama to continue to gut our military and to worsen the foreign policy blunders that even now are starting to become evident.

Second, the next president is going to be able to pick two new Supreme Court Justices at least, and looking at whom the president's choices have been thus far you can just imagine what he's going to pack the Court with. The ramifications will go on for decades.

And third, if the GOP establishment figures things are going to fall nicely into their laps in 2016, they're going to be in for a rude awakening. 2012 might be the last time the American people are going to trust them with governing.

The election of 2012 was an election the Republicans should have been able to win handily. If they fail to unseat President Obama I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see them go the way of the Whigs, as a new party forms to try and restore our Republic and takes in a lot of the old Reagan coalition, including a lot of the GOP's rising stars .

Eurozone Ministers Agree To Second Greek Bailout

The final deal has been hammered out, and the euro zone ministers have finally agreed to the conditions for a second Greek bailout. In exchange for a new loan of over 130 billion euros, the Greeks are going to have over 107 billion euros worth of debt written off.

Greece will also have to agree to the following tough conditions, with the goal of getting Greece to reduce its debt to a mere 120.5% of GDP by 2020:

  • Private holders of Greek debt are going to take a 70% 'haircut' on the value of their bonds, equivalent to 70 cents on the dollar.

  • Greece's economy will be subjected to permanent monitoring by euro zone monitors from the EU, the IMF and the ECB on the ground in Athens. In other words, Greece is essentially not in control of its own economy any longer.

  • The Greek constitution will be amended to give priority to debt repayments over the funding of government services

  • Greece will set up a special account, managed separately from its main budget, that must always contain enough money to service its debts for the coming three months

  • Essentially, the euro zone has 'purchased' Greece in exchange for lending them the money they need to pay their debts.

The deal reflects the schizoid nature of the euro zone on the matter. On one hand, they'd like to be rid of Greece, so they came up with conditions almost impossible to meet. On the other hand, they're afraid that if Greece defaults and skips put of the euro zone, it will give other countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy and Ireland similar ideas.

The Greek parliament is expected to vote on the bailout tomorrow.Personally, I think they'd be far better off simply defaulting, going back to the drachma and starting over fresh. No one is going to lend Greece any money or buy its bonds for some time anyway, so it's not like the country's credit ratings matter. And a number of Greeks see it that way.

"The funds that are coming in are not staying in Greece, are not being invested in Greece, are not here to help the Greeks get out of this crisis," Constantine Michalos, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told the BBC.

"It's simply to repay the banks, so that they can retain their balance sheets on the profit side."

Yes...and also to provide the EU time for the euro zone to build greater firewall protection around its banks and reduce their exposure when Greece eventually defaults, as well as around other potentially vulnerable countries like Spain and Italy.

In a reversal of that old saying, it's the Greeks that need to beware of foreigners bearing gifts.

Supreme Court To Hear New Case On Race Based Affirmative Action

The Supreme Court has agreed to reconsider its earlier decision on race-based affirmative action. The new case, Fisher v. University of Texas, involves a white female student who was denied a slot at the flagship campus of the University of Texas because the university's race-conscious admission policy cost her a spot in the freshman class. The Court is going to hear the case during the term that begins in October, which means affirmative action could be an issue in the fall elections.

The Obama administration is supporting Texas in the case and has advised colleges and universities that under a SCOTUS 2003 decision, they may still make race-based decisions on admissions in pursuit of diversity.

The 2003 case, last time the Supreme Court ruled on affirmative action was a 5 to 4 decision in Grutter v. Bollinger, where Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who wrote the majority opinion said that the University of Michigan law school could consider race in evaluating applicants, because government has "a compelling interest in obtaining the educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body."

Since then, O'Connor has been replaced by Samuel Alito, and new Justice Elena Kagen has recused herself because she was active in supporting the case while she was President Obama's Solicitor General.

The case involves one Abigail Noel Fisher. According to the Texas system, all graduates in the top ten percent of their high school classes qualify fro UT admission. The rest are put into a second group that considers, test scores, community service, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and yes, race. Fisher fell into the second group and is claiming she was denied a spot in favor of a less qualified student because of her race. Her lawyer is also arguing that UT’s policy of automatically admitting the top 10 percent already brings in percentages of minority students that go far beyond the numbers in question in Grutter v. Bollinger. Around 30 per cent of the students enrolling in the freshman class in question qualified as minority.

A three judge panel of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the University of Texas, but the ruling sparked a number of objections from other judges on the 5th Circuit Court to the point where the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case.

I have always found it ironic that the cure for bigotry in favor of one group was somehow thought to be bigotry and quotas in favor of other groups.Aside from being a clear violation of the Fourteenth Amendment,it is also a violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which is still the law of the land.As Abraham Lincoln once famously said, I guess it depends on whose ox is being gored. And of course, what race it happens to be.

The Iraqis have no air defenses at this time and now that U.S. forces have withdrawn from Iraq, the U.S. has no part in defending Iraq's air space, so the road is wide open.

According to Rühe, the most difficult obstacle to destroy is the underground Fordow enrichment plant.

    Harvard Endorses Israel's Destruction

    http://sassywire.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/220px-harvard_wreath_logo_1-svg.png?w=500

On March 3-4, Harvard University is hosting a conference sponsored by its Kennedy School of Government entitled “One State Conference: Israel/Palestine and the One State Solution.” Its explicit goal is to discuss methods of achieving the the destruction of Israel.

According to the “Vision and Goals” of the conference, as outlined by its website:

“To date, the only Israel/Palestine solution that has received a fair rehearsal in mainstream forums has been the two-state solution. Our conference will help to expand the range of academic debate on this issue. Thus, our main goal is to educate ourselves and others about the possible contours of a one-state solution and the challenges that stand in the way of its realization.”

When you who's speaking and who's not, what the conference is about becomes painfully obvious.

The Harvard student groups involved include student groups including, Students for Justice in Palestine, the Palestine Caucus, the Arab Caucus, the Progressive Caucus, the Association for Justice in the Middle East, and members of the radical Jewish Voice for Peace. Speakers will include Ali Abunimah, the Executive Director of the Electronic Intifada; Dalit Baum, of the BDS organization Coalition of Women for Peace; Ilan Pappe, a radical left Israeli academic who makes a nice living lecturing in Europe about how evil the country he was born in is and whose main claims to fame were fabricating the story of a 'massacre' at a place called Tantura that was proven in court never to have occurred and popularizing a phony quotation to make it seem like Israel leader David Ben -Gurion endorsed the expulsion of Israel's Arabs ; Marc Ellis, Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Baylor University, who makes a fetish out of equating Zionism with old fashioned colonialism and Israel’s treatment of the 'Palestinians' to the Nazi treatment of Jews and is now desperately trying to avoid being fired; and Hamas apologist Diana Buttu.

And of course,as a main attraction, there's the Kennedy School's own Stephen Walt, co-author of the factually challenged anti-semitic trophe The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy. When he's not busily engaged in poisoning the minds of America's future foreign policy establishment, Professor Walt writes putrid little pieces for Foreign Policy shilling for Mein Kampf, which echoes his own book in repeating the dark fairy tales of a Jewish Fifth Column and fantasizing about a second Holocaust. He'll go over huge, I'm sure.

All of these individuals and groups have something in common. They all see Israel as an “apartheid state,” guilty of the “ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population.” And they all want a final solution in which Israel disappears by any means necessary as quickly as possible. And yes, the last sentence is exactly what I meant, because to these people a 'one state solution' means the murder and ethnic cleansing of Israel's Jews, nothing less.

Nor is this going to be just a bunch of speakers. This is being billed as an 'activist' conference, as opposed to one with an academic or research framework. It's rife with a number of how-to workshops on deligitimizing Israel. And needless to say, not a single pro-Israel voice is going to be heard.

And make no mistake..Harvard is totally behind this. The Kennedy School's logo appears on the conference website, Harvard is providing the premises and the university is admitting that this hatefest is being at least partially underwritten by “modest” funds set aside for student activities. Yet, when he was pressed, Kennedy School Dean David T. Ellwood actually had the temerity to release this statement, saying:

I want to emphasize once again that Harvard University and the Harvard Kennedy School in no way endorses or supports the apparent position of these student organizers or any participants they include. We hope that the final shape of the conference will be significantly more balanced.

No, they're not endorsing it or supporting it - all they're doing is allowing it to use university property, letting the organizers use the Kennedy School logo and helping fund it!

Melodie Jackson, Associate Dean for Communications was at least a bit more honest: “Generally administrators try to be supportive of student ideas for events that they are planning.”

Really, Ms. Jackson? That's wonderful news. So if a Harvard student group wanted to present a conference using Harvard facilities on Islamist terrorism featuring David Horowitz, Bat Ye'or, Robert Spencer, Ayann Hirsh Ali and Walid Shoebat the university would fund and support it and allow it to use Harvard's facilities?

Yes, we both no better than that. Especially given the enormous amount of money the Saudis pump into Harvard and other universities to make sure nothing like that ever happens. It's called prostitution when private entrepreneurs engage in it.

As the CAMERA link above mentions, according to the working definition of anti-Semitism developed by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), and recognized by the United States Department of State, the One State Conference Harvard is funding and hosting is implicitly “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination,” and thus actively disseminating anti-Semitism.

That also explicitly applies to another part of the working definition, “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis”, which is something every member of this charming group has done on many occasions and is almost certain to do when being cheered on by the sort of people this conference is going to attract.

And Harvard is complicit in it, thus returning to an old Harvard tradition that dates back to the 1930's, when many of the faculty members at Harvard were openly anti-Semitic, including Harvard’s president James Bryant Conant, who was the force behind quotas to keep Jews out of the university, law school Dean Roscoe Pound, an outspoken Nazi sympathizer who attended Nazi rallies in Germany during his vacations, and Harvard history professor, America Firster and Nazi apologist William L. Langer.

Harvard didn't stop with mere quotas and openly expressed anti-Semitic sympathies. The University went one better when they invited Nazi official Ernst (Putzi) Hanfstaungl, one of Hitler's top aides as the Harvard commencement speaker in 1934. When Jews in Boston protested, President Conant had them arrested for “illegally displaying signs.”

So this is a real back to the future moment for Harvard, which is, after all, a private university that has every right to promote Jew hatred if it wants to.

But they can't have it both ways and deny that Harvard is doing so. Because that's exactly what Harvard's doing. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

It's morally disgusting and a comment on the times we live that a university with the motto 'veritas' (truth) would be so eager to embrace falsehood, lies and bigotry.

Iran Ends Crude Oil Sales To UK And French Companies

The Iranian regime has formally announced that it is cutting off all oil sales to French and British companies.

The ban is in retaliation for EU sanctions on buying Iranian oil, set to go into effect on July 1st of this year.

"Exporting crude to British and French companies has been stopped ... we will sell our oil to new customers," spokesman Alireza Nikzad was quoted as saying by the Ministry of Petroleum website. For 'new customers', read India and China.

The European countries had already cut back their purchases of Iran oil in anticipation of the sanctions, with major players like French company Total, Royal Dutch Shell and Spain's Cepsa and Repsol either cutting back sharply on Iranian crude or ceasing to buy it altogether. The EU accounted for close to 18% of Iran's imports.

The Europeans say they have reserves for about 120 days, and there are additional sources available like Russia, South America,Libya, the U.S.and European North Sea Oil. In addition, the Saudis and Gulf States have already pledged to make up any shortfall. That could lead to fireworks if the Iranians decide to try close off the Strait of Hormuz to stop the Persian Gulf Oil from reaching Europe.

The idea behind the sanctions is to force Tehran into giving up its illegal nuclear weapons program. I see the Iranian regime as trying something much more dramatic rather than giving up their nukes.

Germany Drawing Up Plans For Greece To Default And Leave The Euro

    http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Business/Pix/pictures/2011/12/8/1323336316982/Times-Merkel-Sarkozy-cart-001.jpg

It seems Germany is finally ready to pull the trigger now that it's obvious Greece is likely to default on its debt with or without a second eurozone bailout:

But the severe austerity measures being demanded have caused such fury in Greece, and the cuts required are so deep, that Wolfgang Schäuble, the German finance minister, does not believe that any government would be able to implement them.

His pessimism has been tipped into despair with a secret European Commission, Central and IMF report that even if Greece made good on its promises, it would not be enough to reach the target of bringing total debt to 120 per cent of GDP by 2020.

"He just thinks the Greeks cannot do what needs to be done. And even if by some miracle they did what has been promised, he - and a growing group - are convinced it will not pull Greece out the hole," said a euro zone official.

Of course it won't...and it was never really intended to. That became obvious after the first bailout failed. Greece agreeing to reforms in exchange for billions of euros was one thing but implementation was always the problem, just as it's likely to be after another bailout. Demonstrations and riots in the streets, high unemployment, strikes, an unwilling bureaucracy and a power struggle as different politicians play football with the unrest all make Greece an unlikely candidate for instituting the reforms called for by what Greeks refer to as 'the German diktat'. At least one Greek politico is using stories of the Greek resistance against the Nazis as a rallying point.

Even if the Greeks did manage to implement all the reforms properly, the euro zone's own figures now show it would still fall short, with debt likely to total 129 per cent of GDP in 2020.

None of this was any secret even before the current crisis. However, the kabuki was needed because there are certain legal problems with kicking Greece out of the euro zone.Unless the country fails to honor its agreements to implement reforms and pay back its creditors as agreed. So the solution is to hold out the carrot of another bailout while asking for reforms that are impossible to implement and debt service levels that are unsustainable, nicht wahr?

Under the current austerity demands, 20% of Greek civil servants are going to lose their jobs, a substantial rise in unemployment where a major percentage of the country's labor force works in the public sector and unemployment is already at over 18%. The minimum wage would be cut sharply, public sector salaries would be slashed even further, pensions reduced, taxes raised and the defense budget slashed to the bone.

No Greek politician wants to have him or herself associated with this.

In Greece itself there have been widespread increases in crime. Greeks are heading into the national forests to cut firewood to get them through the winter, and a barter economy is becoming common in some parts of the country.Greece's National Gallery has already been burgled, and a gang of armed thieves looted a museum in Olympia on Friday, stealing bronze and pottery artifacts for sale. Meanwhile, many Greeks, especially those 25 and under with educational qualifications or practical skills like plumbing or electrical work are leaving the country, because there simply aren't any jobs to be had.

In a very real sense, the country is already bankrupt. And even many Greeks are saying what's been obvious to me for quite some time. They'd be far better off defaulting on their debts, going back to the drachma and starting fresh. No one is going to lend Greece money or buy their public debt anyway for quite some time.Provided they make necessary reforms, reign in corruption, cut the public sector sharply and take steps to make Greece a preferred place to do business, getting out from under the euro might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

The country still has its gorgeous climate and its picturesque beaches, islands and scenery, and if they can manage to get their current law and order problem under control Greece has the potential to become a major tourist mecca for all budgets. In fact, tourism accounts for about 20% of the country's GDP right now as it is.

Greece also has its fishing industry, its shipping industry with the largest merchant navy in the world and the possibility of increasing its market share in commodities like olives and olive oil, tobacco, cotton and other agricultural products due to the reduced labor costs. And a fresh start might even encourage high tech companies to start making things like computers, cell phones and silicone chips in Athens.

The real downside of Greece defaulting is more of a problem for Germany, France and the other members of the euro zone. Once countries like Portugal, Italy, Spain and Ireland see the Greeks getting away with walking away from their debts, they're likely to make a move to do so too.

Muslim States At UN Slam Gays For 'Abnormal Sexual Behaviour', Boycott Panel On Anti-Gay Violence

A Pakistani spokesman for the Muslim bloc in the UN caused a furor today by announcing to the UN’s top rights body that its 56 member states (essentially, the members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation plus 'Palestine') would ignore a scheduled UN rights panel on anti-gay violence, saying they were “disturbed” at the “attempted focus on certain persons” on the grounds of their “abnormal sexual behaviour,” which “have nothing to do with fundamental human rights.”

The site UN Watch has the statement in full posted on its site.

The letter, written by Pakistan’s envoy Zamir Akram on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's 56 members plus the Palestinian Authority was sent, believe it or not, on Valentine’s Day to UN Human Rights Council president Laura Dupuy Lasserre and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

Who says Muslims don't have a sense of humor?

The OIC declared its " unequivocal opposition" to the upcoming March 7th panel discussion on a new UN report on discriminatory laws and practices and violence against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity...which primarily occur guess where?

The OIC said it will “will not accept its considerations and recommendations.”

The OIC letter also said the panel on anti-gay violence addresses “controversial notions” that have “no legal foundation in any international human rights instrument,” “misinterpreting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights” and would “seriously jeopardize the entire international human rights framework,” and “ shift the focus from the real issues that deserve the attention of the Council.”

By 'shifting the focus', they mean talking about anything but Jews and Israel, of course.

It's fascinating to me - well, perhaps sickening is a better word- the way the Left in the west makes common cause with countries that actively repress women and homosexuals while at the same time making a fetish about the 'Palestinians' and 'anti-Zionism' to demonize the small country of Israel, which does neither. It's also interesting that the so-called humanitarians at the UN don't simply kick them out no matter how many times they violate the UN Charter.

This is anecdotal, but none the less true. There are a number of homosexual Arabs in Tel Aviv and elsewhere who are essentially illegal aliens who fled to Israel from the 'Palestinian Authority' and Gaza to avoid being executed. The Shin Bet and the police have a list and know exactly whom they are but deliberately do not deport them as long as they live out their lives quietly...because they know that to do so would be the equivalent of a death sentence.

All men may be equal, but all cultures aren't.

Treasury Sec Geithner :'You're Right, We Have No Plan To Avert Fiscal Melt-Down; All We Know Is We Don't Like Yours'

C0ngressman Paul Ryan and the House Republicans just passed a realistic budget in response to President Obama's fiscal abortion. It calls for five trillion in realistic spending cuts over the next decade, leaves benefits for seniors over 54 in place and doesn't gut national defense. Guess who drops by to engage in a back and forth with Ryan on the House floor? None other than Obama Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, speaking on behalf of the Obama Regime.

Ryan uses a chart based on the Administration's own documents to highlight just how dismally the Obama Administration has failed to curb spending and publicly held debt, and how we're going to be the next Greece if we don't do something to fix it.

Geithner's response has to be the sound bite of the year: ""You are right to say we're not coming before you today to say 'we have a definitive solution to that long term problem.' What we do know is, we don't like yours."

This president has piled up a $5 trillion deficit in three years, much of it wasted or gifted to campaign donors, political allies and well connected insiders in classic Chicago fashion. Many of them have followed the Solyndra model and have later gone on to have successful business 'failures' at the taxpayer's expense.

For the first two years of his administration, President Obama had a veto proof majority in both Houses of Congress that were his enablers in allowing him to loot our economy and spend whatever he wanted. In fact, if you consult the figures of the Congressional Budget Office, you find that of even the relatively modest $1 trillion deficit he inherited, 67% occurred after January,2007 - when the Democrats first gained control of Congress.

So after all that, President Obama's hand picked Secretary of the Treasury comes before Congress to defend this shameful record and admit they have no clue as to what to do to avert a financial catastrophe, but they're going to make sure no one else does either.

President Clinton at least had the intelligence to allow the Republican Congress to rescue him from the financial folly of his first two years and fix things, knowing he'd get the credit. President Obama is such an arrogant Left wing ideologue that he figures he doesn't have to. And besides,a financial disaster isn't going to affect him in the least..and will go a long way towards getting even with an America he feels needs to be taken down a peg or two.

The Council Has Spoken!! This Week's Watcher's Council Results

The Council has spoken, the votes have been cast, and the results are in for this week's Watcher's Council match up, carved eternally in the akhasic records of cyberspace.

There was a great deal of attention this week from the Council on Th eObama Administration's attack on the First Amendment via Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius' fatwa requiring religious institutions like those run by the Catholic Church to provide birth control, sterilization and abortion services to their employees as part of the health insurance requirements of ObamaCare. This week's winner, Rhymes With Right's Should The Catholic Church Go Medieval Over ObamaCare Regulations? proposes that the Church fight back with some ancient strategies. Here's a slice:

On January 20, 2012, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius issued a regulation which required religiously affiliated employers to provide their employees with free sterilization and contraceptives(including abortifacients) even if doing so violated the religious tenets of the organization. While there was a small carve-out that would allow actual houses of worship to refrain from offering such coverage, the regulation would require Catholic schools, hospitals, and charities to pay for such insurance coverage if they employed or served a significant number of non-Catholic employees. While the regulation is not aimed directly at the Catholic Church – it applies equally to other faith groups with teachings against sterilization, birth control, and abortion – it is clear that the biggest impact will be upon Catholic groups.

The uproar was immediate and loud. On February 10, President Obama himself seemed to offer a compromise option, but reality is that the changed wording and presentation did not constitute a substantive change of law or policy. What’s more, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid blocked efforts to introduce and vote on legislation that would have blocked any regulation of this sort, ensuring that President Obama’s allies would ensure that there was no chance to undo the “compromise” – which the President has indicated will be implemented this August. This means that the American people will not have the ability to install new leaders before religious organizations are forced to surrender their principles, pay crippling fines, or shut down.

As I’ve examined the current situation, it strikes me that this attack on religion is unprecedented in American history and that it flies in the face of the guarantees found in the Bill of Rights. But attacks upon the faith are not unprecedented in the history of the Catholic Church. From Apostolic times through the Middle Ages and Reformation and up to the present, there have been political leaders whose lust for power and personal glorification have led them to seek to undercut the teachings of the Church and its spiritual prerogatives. The faithful died in the arenas of the Roman Empire rather than burn incense at the altars of the emperors, popes engaged in political and military conflict with enemies through the ages, and courageous bishops and priests spread the great encyclical letter Mit Brennender Sorge in the face of the Nazi regime in 1938. And if Pope John Paul II had the ability to undermine Communism in Poland and the other nations behind the Iron Curtain, what might his friend, co-worker, and successor Pope Benedict XVI be able to do regarding this effort by Barack Obama to force the Catholic Church to act contrary to its teachings?

Some might ask Josef Stalin’s question – how many divisions does the pope have? But one need only remember that the Church has survived conflicts with greater men than the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and that Christ himself promised Simon Peter that the gates of Hell will not prevail against him and his successors – a promise kept for some two millennia. All that is necessary is for Benedict to deploy the full force of the spiritual weapons in his arsenal. It would not be unreasonable for him to follow some of the historical precedents for their use in this case. Indeed, I'd argue that the Pope might consider taking a course that has both modern precedent and roots in the medieval period.

To this end, I believe that an encyclical letter, with its definitive version written in English, ought to be issued. In doing this, Pope Benedict would be following the precedent of Pope Pius XI in issuing Mit Brennender Sorge in 1938. The young Joseph Ratzinger would have heard as this denunciation of Nazism was read from the pulpit of his church on Palm Sunday, 1938, as it was in virtually every German church. Benedict should act in kind now, speaking as pastor to his flock and as head of state challenging the misdeeds of the American government -- and require that the encyclical be read in every Catholic church on the same Sunday.

What should be included in this encyclical? I would suggest several elements. The first part would be a restatement of the teachings of Vatican II on the proper relationship of church and state, and an analysis as to how the Obama Regime mandate is incompatible with that relationship. It should be made clear that this is not a claim of special privilege, but a function of natural law that applies to all who claim the title of Christian and to non-Christians as well. No government, whether democracy, monarchy, or dictatorship, has within the scope of its authority to direct a faith community to commit actions that are at odds with its fundamental teachings.

The second part of the encyclical should lay out the consequences of the promulgation of this new regulation and its successor. This should begin with an announcement that Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius is immediately excommunicated, as are any other Catholics within the senior staff of the department. In addition, immediate excommunication should also fall upon any Catholic member of Congress who voted for ObamaCare. Lest there be any confusion on the matter, the individuals excommunicated should be listed by name. In addition, latae sententia will be incurred by any Catholic who directly enforces or causes to be enforced the requirements of the new regulations. Similar sanctions should be directed at state officials in the 28 state with similar provisions in state law. At least as regards the public officials, the lifting of the excommunication ought to be reserved to the Holy Father himself. The second consequence contained within the encyclical ought to include the imposition of interdict upon the United States if the regulation is not rescinded by a certain date, with the interdict to be lifted only upon the lifting of the regulation and the return of any and all property seized as a consequence of failure to comply with the regulation.
