Polishing The Clown

The usually erudite Dr. Charles Krauthammer is the latest in a series of commentators to indulge in an exercise best characterized as mental masturbation, assessing George W. Bush's place in history using an interview he did this week with the current occupant of the White House as...ummm..stimulation.

While correctly stating that it's early days to be indulging in such an exercise, the good doctor jumps right in and does it anyway:

Bush is much like Truman, who developed the sinews of war for a new era (the Department of Defense, the CIA, the NSA), expanded the powers of the presidency, established a new doctrine for active intervention abroad, and ultimately engaged in a war (Korea) -- also absent an attack on the United States -- that proved highly unpopular.

So unpopular that Truman left office disparaged and highly out of favor. History has revised that verdict. I have little doubt that Bush will be the subject of a similar reconsideration.

Odd that Dr. Krauthammer, who usually knows better, would characterize Bush as a war president. At best, the man who told us after 9/11 that our enemies' creed was peace, that we were in a `war on terror' but that the government should handle it and we should all just go shopping and allowed our nation's unity, natural anger and energy to dissipate doesn't seem like that much of a war leader to me.

Actually, Truman ain't a half bad comparison in some ways, although I doubt Krauthammer realizes how good. Tell you what, Doc. I'll see you your Truman comparison and raise you a decade or two.

It's the fashion to deify Truman these days, but the little ward politician from Missouri has an uncanny similarity to Dubbyah in that his tenure in office was a decidedly mixed bag.

Like Dubbyah, Truman was thrust into the position of being a war president, but in Truman's case the war was almost won, the commanders, planning and mechanisms were already in place and Harry Truman's two chief areas that called for major wartime decisions involved the atomic bomb and what to do about Eastern Europe. He got the first one right and failed abysmally at the second, dooming Eastern Europe to communist slavery and tyranny because of his ineptitude in dealing with the Soviets.Truman trusted Unky Joe Stalin. Almost as if he looked into his soul, the way Dubbyah did with Putin!

For all the heroics of the Red Army, they were dependent on us for supplies, and at that point we were the only ones that had the atomic bomb.Does anyone seriously doubt that if a more decisive president had told them to get their behinds out of Eastern Europe or face the consequences they would have done so?

Part of Truman's problems in foreign policy stemmed from the fact that his administration was riddled with Soviet spies and sympathizers, and Truman's lackadaisical attitude towards cracking down on them cost us our atom bomb secrets and probably a hostile relationship with China, where Truman continued to back Chiang Kai Shek and the Kuomintang against both his own inclinations (if we believe his memoirs)and the advice of his own military theater commander General Stillwell because of how cosy the Chiangs and the China Lobby were with prominent Democrats.

There's an eerie echo of this in Dubbyah's cozy relationship with his family's bidness partners the Saudis and the UAE, his stacking his administration with Saudi friendly cabinet members and his refusal to crack down on wahabi jihadist mosques and madrassahs here in America...but at least Truman didn't have his family's money tied up with our ideological enemies, nor did he raise money from them to create some grandiose $500 million presidential library...I'll give him that.

Another thing you have to give Harry Truman and George Marshall is the success of the Marshall Plan, which undoubtedly saved what was left of Europe for the West,or at least for the New Caliphate, although that last can hardly be blamed on Truman if it happens.

Similarly, you have to give Dubbyah credit for tax cuts and jump starting the economy out of a recession, even after taking a huge hit after 9/11.And for managing to keeop th ecountry fr0om absorbing another major terrorist attack, although if you read these pages regularly you know we've also been incredibly lucky...sometimes in spite of our efforts to blow it.

Another eerie similarity between Presidents Bush and Truman is their relationships with Israel.Truman is revered by Jewish Democrats because he reluctantly agreed at the last minute to have the US vote in the UN to create the State of Israel, but they conveniently forget that he did absolutely nothing to help the new nation survive when they were set upon by 7 Arab armies.

As a matter of fact, he placed an arms embargo on Israel, forbade American Jews from going over there to help fight off the Arabs and refused to intervene with the British, who were arming, training and in the case of Jordan officering the Arab armies who had pledged to massacre every Jew in Israel. And this a mere three years after Auschwitz was liberated.

George W. Bush's record with Israel isn't quite that egregious, but it may turn out that way if Condi Rice, one of the worst secretaries of state in US history has her way.

President Bush had an excellent relationship with Israel and Ariel Sharon after 9/11, finally getting in a visceral way what it was like to see civilians blown up. But in the end, the Saudis and his Arab friendly cabinet members ended up speaking the loudest, especially during his second term. Bush not only acquiesced to reneging on his amended agreement with Sharon over the infamous Road Map,but to embracing the Saudi's peace plan and arm twisting the weakest government in Israel's history to make it happen.

Of course, the big push Krauthammer makes for Dubbyah's place in history has to do George W. Bush's intervention in Iraq:

....history has not yet rendered its verdict on the Iraq war. We can say that it turned out to be longer and more costly than expected, surely. But the question remains as to whether the now-likely outcome -- transforming a virulently aggressive enemy state in the heart of the Middle East into a strategic ally in the war on terror -- was worth it. I suspect the ultimate answer will be far more favorable than it is today.

Well, you're right Doc...and you're wrong.

According to President Bush, our goals were to have a stable Iraq who would be democratic and an ally of ours in the so-called 'war on terror.' The goals themselves were absolutely farcical in terms of the reality on the ground and what our actual war aims should have been, and even at that we have only accomplished one out of three, stability. And it cost us 4,000 lives and a trillion dollars, much of which was wasted or stolen.

As
I pointed out some time ago, this was easy to see coming from a long way off.

What we've established in Iraq is a Shiite Islamic Republic based on Sharia with a great deal of its leadership friendly to our enemies in Iran. Iraq adheres religiously to a boycott of Israel that is against US law,and there has been
open season under our watch on Iraq's Christians, a story that rarely merits a mention in the dinosaur media.Iraq will no more be a 'ally ' of ours against our enemies than say, Saudi Arabia or Yemen and will limit their 'war on terror' activities to simply suppressing any dissident elements in their own society.

It's highly unlikely that we'll see the Iraqi Army we trained and equipped at such great expense sending troops to fight at our side against the Taliban in Afghanistan, Abu Sayef in the Philippines,or anywhere else. Nor will we see Iraq allowing US bases in their country or their ports or other facilities to be used by our military in any hostilities against our enemies in Iran. Maliki and his friends have said so many times.

If things turn out differently, it will be because of the valiant performance and bravery of our warriors and the leadership of Generals Petraeus and Ordierno, not President Bush, who had to be dragged kicking and screaming into a new strategy. And I'll be the first to admit it.

Both Truman and Bush also appear to be similar in leaving messes for their successors to clean up. Bush will likely be leaving an energized and resurgent Russia, a country importing far too much oil from our enemies, Iran on the verge of becoming a nuclear power,a divided country, a border that's a sieve and a economy that's basically sound but with severe problems. Truman left the Cold War, the Soviets with the atom bomb, an economy in recession and an unfinished war in Korea.
The difference is that most of Truman's messes ended being cleaned up by his successors over the years, which is why his rep is as good as it is today. Bush appears to be leaving a lot more serious mess, and it remains to be seen if he too will get the revisionist treatment. Perhaps it all depends on who cleans up after him.

Sarah Palin Disinvited From Anti-Ahmadinejad Rally In New York

Ira Foreman, the useful idiots at the National Jewish Democratic Council and other Leftist Jews sniffing around the Chosen One strike again.

As you might know, there's a major rally planned to greet Holocaust denier and anti-Semite Mahmoud Ahmadinejad when he comes to the UN to speak. And both Senator Clinton and Governor Sarah Palin were supposed to attend.

Once it was reported that Governor Palin had accepted an invitation from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations to speak at the rally, Hillary canceled. And then the pressure started ramping up from the Leftist Jews supporting the Chosen One to disinvite Sarah Palin.

On Thursday, the Conference of Presidents held a meeting and decided to do just that..to disinvite Governor Palin.

Malcolm Hoenlein, the executive vice chairman of the conference, said that “the decision was not to have any elected officials. The message of this rally, to oppose Ahmadinejad, that message was being obfuscated and it was a decision of the organizers that there would be no political personality invited.”

Horse manure. This was about Leftist Jewish Donkeys wanting to deny Sarah Palin a high profile forum.

To say the least, it's well..embarrassing. Here we have a group of major Jewish organizations insulting a woman who is unabashedly pro-Israel, possibly the next Vice President and ultimately perhaps even the President of our Republic to please a bunch of empty secular Leftist Jews?

Stoo-pid.

I already know a number of people who were planning to attend who aren't going to bother. Way to hand Ahmadinejad a win on a silver platter.

Should any of you be so inclined, here's some contact info to let these people know exactly how you feel about the matter. I already have..as well as mentioning that there's going to be a few empty pledge envelopes for these people, especially once the word gets out. I hope it was worth it for them.

"Gaza Is The World's Largest Concentration Camp"

That's the considered opinion of Lauren Booth, pictured above buying Snickers bars and a few other creature comforts at a well stocked grocery in Gaza City in between meetings with her Hamas pals.

Booth, Tony Blair's sister-in-law is one of the useful idiots in that “Free Gaza” group who set out on two boats from Cyprus in an attempt to break the blockade of the terrorist enclave. The Israeli navy declined to stop them or sink them perhaps because of Booth's presence so they got through, after which Booth and nine of her Hamas loving friends chose to remain in Gaza, giving up their places for the return trip on the boats to Hamas 'refugees' bound for Europe.Unfortunately, she's stuck there now, unable to exit through Israel or Egypt. And ranting about concentration camps to the media.

Now, perhaps I'm being uncharitable.

Like many if not most Leftards, Ms. Booth undoubtedly comes from a privileged background and may not understand exactly what a concentration camp is. Perhaps she merely needs some instruction:

This is a mass grave in Bergen-Belsen, Ms. Booth. You see, the Nazi concentration camps were designed not to 'concentrate people, but to murder them, man, woman and child.

This is another feature of real concentration camps, Ms.Booth..ovens designed to burn the bodies of victims.

And this, Ms. Booth, is what the victims of concentration camps look like. This jolly photo was taken in the German camp of Wobbelin. Being primitive sorts, the Americans insisted on taking the townspeople for a little tour after the Germans insisted they had no idea of what was going on downwind from them.

After they were forced to take the tour, the Mayor of the town and his wife both committed suicide.

Again, just so you fully understand what's coming out of your mouth...this is what a concentration camp looks like.

Seen anything like this in Gaza while you were shopping to feed your face,Ms. Booth?

Seen anything remotely like it?

I didn't think so.

Now that we're clear on this little matter, I also have to report that British diplomats are actually working diligently on getting this foul harridan out of this trap of her own making and back to Britain.

You're quite welcome to her, cousins. For my part, I wouldn't waste spit on her if she were on fire.

Livni Wins Kadima Primary...Barely

Israel's foreign minister Tzipi Livni just barely managed to edge out ex-defense minister Shaul Mofaz in the Kadima primary to see who has the chance of succedding the `retiring ' Ehud Olmert as Israel's prime minister.Livni won Wednesday's Kadima primary by 431 votes, winning 43.1 percent (16,936 votes) while Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz won 42% (16,535 votes).

I refer to it as a chance because it's by no means certain that Livni will be able to form a government..in which case the country goes to general elections.

I don't trust Tzipi Livni as far as I can throw her..probably less. She was part of the whole circus with Olmert, and while sh emay not have participated in Olmert's corrupt enterprises she's been on the frontlines of negotiating away Israel's security..an dI doubt if being in the top spot will change her.

She will have to try and form a coalition governt, which means at least 61 seats in the Knesset. The key is the Labor Party. Its leader Ehud Barak detests Livni on a personal and visceral level, an dit remains to beseen whether he hates Livni or Likud leader Bibi Netanyahu more. I've heard several strong rumors of a deal between Barak and Netanyahu for a national unity government, also known in America as a shotgun wedding.

We'll see what develops.

Obama Slurs Limbaugh And McCain With Spanish Speaking Ads

Being a liar is one thing. It's another thing entirely to be both a liar and to be absolutely awful at it.

Barack Hussein Obama repeatedly gives us an example of category number 2.

The latest from the Obama campaign is a series of TV and radio ads in Spanish geared towards Hispanics in the states of Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico entitled 'Dos Caros' ( two faces ):

"They want us to forget the insults we've put up with, the intolerance," the television ad's announcer says in Spanish as a picture of Rush Limbaugh appears onscreen with quotes of him saying, "Mexicans are stupid and unqualified" and "Shut your mouth or get out."

"They made us feel marginalized in a country we love so much," the ad continues. "John McCain and his Republican friends have two faces. One that says lies just to get our vote and another, even worse, that continues the failed policies of George Bush that put special interests ahead of working families."

The companion radio ad uses the same script and then continues:"Don't forget that John McCain abandoned us rather than confront the leaders of the Republican Party. Many of us were born here, and others came to work and achieve a better life for their families -- not to commit crimes or drain the system like many of John McCain's friends claim."

"Let's not be fooled by political tricks from John McCain and the Republicans. Vote so they respect us. Vote for a change."

For starters, both of the Rush Limbaugh quotes are bogus and taken hugely out of context.

The first one, the 'stupid Mexicans' quote comes from way back in 1993 when Limbaugh was warning about the effects on American jobs from NAFTA.

Limbaugh said,"If you are unskilled and uneducated, your job is going south. Skilled workers, educated people are going to do fine 'cause those are the kinds of jobs NAFTA is going to create. If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people, I'm serious, let the unskilled jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do -- let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work."

Not all that gracefully phrased, and I wouldn't have said it quite like that but in context, Rush Limbaugh was totally correct; NAFTA had a chilling effect on unskilled and teenage part time labor in America, and those jobs are now gone-along with a lot of skilled jobs - and being done by unskilled, largely uneducated low wage Hispanics.

To lift this out of context to maske it look as though Limbaugh was merely slurring Hispanics is dishonest race politics, exactly what we've come to expect from the official Post Racial Candidate.

The second quote is totally off the wall, and I can testify to this because I heard it myself. Rush was doing one of his typical bits on the air, talking about immigration law and said:“Everybody's making immigration proposals these days. Let me add mine to the mix. Call it The Limbaugh Laws:“First: If you immigrate to our country, you have to speak the native language. You have to be a professional or an investor; no unskilled workers allowed.

Also, there will be no special bilingual programs in the schools with the Limbaugh Laws. No special ballots for elections. No government business will be conducted in your language. Foreigners will not have the right to vote or hold political office.

If you're in our country, you cannot be a burden to taxpayers. You are not entitled to welfare, food stamps, or other government goodies. You can come if you invest here: an amount equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage. If not, stay home.

But if you want to buy land, it'll be restricted. No waterfront, for instance. As a foreigner, you must relinquish individual rights to the property.“And another thing: You don't have the right to protest. You're allowed no demonstrations, no foreign flag waving, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our President or his policies. You're a foreigner: shut your mouth or get out! And if you come here illegally, you're going to jail.

You think the Limbaugh Laws are harsh? Well, every one of the laws I just mentioned are actual laws of Mexico today! That' how the Mexican government handles immigrants to their country. Yet Mexicans come here illegally and protest in our streets!“How do you say ‘double standard’ in Spanish? How about: ‘No mas!’”

Even stranger is the idea of linking McCain with Rush Limbaugh to try and show bias towards Hispanics. Limbaugh has been nothing but critical of McCain for quite some time, as anyone who listens to his show can testify.

McCain's main 'sin' in this regard is changing his tune after nearly losing the GOP nomination over this issue. He still favors immigration reform, but now says he's 'listened to the voters' and the borders must be secured before anything else happens.

What the Obama campaign is doing is stirring up racial hatred and quoting McCain out of context and unfairly to manipulate Hispanics into thinking that McCain is racist and anti-Hispanic.And some people, both Hispanic and non-Hispanic unfortunately will be stupid enough to buy this horse manure.

Maybe Hispanics thinking in terms of racial politics about this should consider, generally speaking, who's been fairer and more supportive of them - black politicians or white ones? Any Hispanic who's seen how America's urban black politicians tend to treat them knows the answer to that one.

Once again, Elmer-Gantry-with-a-tan has come up with a real whopper that's easily disproved, ot the point where it's embarrassing. Hell, I'm embarrased he's not embarrassed.Obama, supposedly campaigning on the idea that he's going to unite America is willing once again to play the race card to try and chisel himself some votes.

In a word, disgusting.

US Embassy Attacked In Yemen ; 16 Dead

The American Embassy in Sana, Yemen was subjected to a suicide attack this morning that left sixteen people dead.

It was a fairly sophicticated and well planned attack. The perpetrators, who've been identified as belonging to Islamic Jihad disguised themselves as Yemini army troops were traveling and in a car disguised as an army vehicle which is how they got through the checkpoints.

Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility after the attack and threatened further assaults on the Saudi, UAE an dBritishembassies in Sana.

Islamic Jihad, for those of you who don't know is an Iranian proxy and it's doubtful they would have cowboyed something like this on their own without orders. The planning and weaponry involved which included RPGs also make it likely that the attack had Iran's knowledge and consent.

The jihadi's car was detonated at the main gated entrance to the embassy compound . When Yemenite emergency and medical personnel responded to the intial explosion, they were targeted by sniper fire from adjoining roofs. All told, there were five explosions.

The dead included six Yemeni soldiers, four civilians, one of whom was Indian, and six attackers - one wearing an explosives belt who was killed before he had the chance to set it off.So far there haven't been any reports of American casualties.

Watcher's Council Nominations, 9/17/08

Every week, the Watcher's Council members nominate two posts each, one of their own and one from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council.

A full list of entries, including the non-Council ones can be found here.

Council News: There’s a spot available on the Watcher’s Council. If you have a blog of your own and feel you measure up, you're welcome to find out what's involved and apply here. Or you can leave a comment in the comments section on this post.

So, let's see what we have this week...

Joshuapundit - Obama’s Connection With The Nation Of Islam - Barack Hussein Obama has a long standing connection with the Nation Of Islam, with American Islamists and with the Saudis. That alone ought to disqualify him in most American's minds for the presidency. The pieces fit together in a quite interesting way....

Cheat-Seeking Missiles - Lipstick Not Only Pig-Hockey Mom Difference - This week, Laer takes on some typically biased coverage from that adjunct of the Obama campaign, the New York Times and examines their snippy critique of Sarah Palin's pipeline accomplishment in terms of the real world. He also includes a story on genetic differences between hockey moms an d pigs he claims appeared in the same paper, which I hope is satire - although I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out it was the real deal.

Bookworm Room - False Syllogisms - This week, Ms. Bookworm has an interesting post on the fallacy of false syllogisms and their effect- the imputing of the qualities of one experience or event to all similar ones.As one example, this is the equivalent of assuming that since your very first ever date was absolutely awful, all dates will be awful and therefore best avoided.

Wolf Howling - McCain, Fannie, Freddie & Obamafuscation -GW does his usual job of exhaustive research and detail to write about the relationship of the two presidential candidates to the current financial kerfuffle...and Obama's hypocritical attempt to use this as a club to beat McCain with.

Soccer Dad - Osama didn’t bark. Why not? -ala' Sherlock Holmes, Soccer Dad finds the fact that the dog didn't bark in the middle of the night most interesting, and draws some solid conclusions about the demise of al-Qaeda.

One quibble, SD..I think it's important to realize that while al Qaeda has suffered significant defeats the ideology they're part of is still going strong, and it's vital we don't confuse a defeat of one of its armies with a defeat of the jihad against the West as a whole.or will we defeat that jihad until we confront, forcibly or otherwise the countries that harbor, finance and help export jihad to the West.

As for al-Qaeda itself, they've been able to regroup in safe havens in Pakistan, affiliates like Abu Sayef and Jemaiah Islamiyah are still going strong, and I also recall that the first year of both the Clinton and Bush administrations was marked by a substantial challenge in the form of a major terrorist attack. We may not have heard the last of them...or their adherents.

Rhymes With Right - Hurricane Ike — The Pissed Off Post -Poor Greg..he ought to get the honors this week just for posting, given the frustrating conditions he's dealing with. A look at the travails of Hurrican Ike from the inside. Here's hoping it all comes out OK in the end, bro.

The Glittering Eye - The Anniversary - Dave deplores what he sees as the politicization of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by both the Left and the Right, particularly in the blogosphere.

The Razor - There Must Be Blood -Scott wants the CEOs of Wall Street companies responsible for the current financial mess to go into the tumbrels and face the music. I sympathize, Scott, but it's unlikely in an election year - just as it's unlikely that the Federal government would stand by and watch homeowners who either spent their equity or who bought properties
on speculation with little or no down get tossed out of their homes.

The Colossus of Rhodey - The Latest — and Lamest — Charge of Racism - Hube looks at a drive to get non-citizens to vote in New York City, and the charge that racism is at the bottom of people's reluctance to allow it.

Education Wonk - U.S. City Celebrates Mexican Independence Day -EdWonk looks at the city of El Centro, California, which apparently has money to burn celebrating the independence of another sovereign nation. And, as EdWonk points out, this city doesn't have a Fourth of July celebration.

The Lipstick Brigade Strikes Back!

Biden To Leave The Ticket??

I keep hearing consistent rumors that Joe Biden is going to be forced off the Democrat ticket.

Yeah, I know, just rumors and scuttlebutt, but I keep hearing them.

The way it's supposedly going down is that sometime after October 5th Biden will step down from being Obama's running mate because of 'health reasons'and Hillary will come on the ticket. The reason for the October 5th date is the VP debate on October 2nd, which Biden will handle either because Hillary wouldn't have sufficient time to prep or simply refused..and anyway, they want Hillary to be an October surprise and try to pull things out at the last minute.

How personally, I don't see how the Dems could pull this off, or why Hillary would gain by pulling Obama out of a mess of his own making, but them's the rumors I keep hearing consistently.

Your thoughts?

Dear Mr. Obama...Economics 101

General Petraeus Leaves Iraq

General David Petraeus turned over formal command in Iraq to General Ordierno today, and returns to his new post as head of CENTCOM.
This incredible warrior succeeded in not only defeating the Jihadis in Iraq, but in defeating our enemies on the home front...and he deserves our sincere gratitude and thanks .
Here's General Petraeus' farewell letter as he moves up to higher ground in this war.
I recommend you read it, to get an idea of what we've accomplished, what still remains to be done and to get the full measure of the man:
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and Civilians of Multi-National Force-Iraq:

It has been the greatest of privileges to have been your commander for thepast 19 months. During that time,we and our civilian and Iraqi partners havebeen engaged in an exceedingly complex, difficult, and important task. And in theface of numerous challenges, we and our partners have helped bring new hope to acountry that was besieged by extremists and engulfed in sectarian violence.

When I took command of Multi-National Force-Iraq in February 2007, I noted that the situation in Iraq was hard but not hopeless. You have proven that assessment to be correct. Indeed, your great work, sacrifice, courage, and skillhave helped to reverse a downward spiral toward civil war and to wrest theinitiative from the enemies of the new Iraq.

Together, Iraqi and Coalition Forces have faced determined, adaptable, and barbaric enemies. You and our Iraqi partners have taken the fight to them, andyou have taken away their sanctuaries and safe havens. You have helped secure the Iraqi people and have enabled, and capitalized on, their rejection of extremism. You have also supported the Iraqi Security Forces as they have grownin number and capability and as they have increasingly shouldered more of theresponsibility for security in their country.

You have not just secured the Iraqi people, you have served them, as well.By helping establish local governance, supporting reconstruction efforts, assisting with revitalization of local businesses, fostering local reconciliation, and conducting a host of other non-kinetic activities, you have contributed significantly to the communities in which you have operated. Indeed, you have been builders and diplomats as well as guardians and warriors.

The progress achieved has been hard-earned. There have been many tough daysalong the way, and we have suffered tragic losses. Indeed, nothing in Iraq hasbeen anything but hard. But you have been more than equal to every task.

Your accomplishments have, in fact, been the stuff of history. Each of youshould be proud of what has been achieved and of the contributions you continueto make. Although our tasks in Iraq are far from complete and hard work and toughfights lie ahead, you have helped bring about remarkable improvements.

Your new commander is precisely the right man for the job. General Ray Odierno played a central role in the progress achieved during the surge. He brings tremendous skill, experience, and understanding as he returns to Iraq fora third tour and takes the helm of MNF-I just seven months after relinquishingcommand of MultiNational Corps-Iraq. I have total confidence in him, and I will do all that I can as the commander of Central Command to help him, MNF-I, and our Iraqi partners to achieve the important goals that we all share for the new Iraq.

Thank you for your magnificent work here in the “Land of the Two Rivers.” And thank you for your sacrifices-and for those of your families–during this crucial phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I am honored to have soldiered with you in this critical endeavor.

With great respect and all best wishes
David H. Petraeus General, United States Army Commanding

Change In The Weather - US Decides To Sell Israel Bunker Busting Bombs

As you'll remember, US SecDef Robert Gates had declined Israel's request to buy bunker buster bombs out of fear that the Israelis would use them to take out Iran's nuclear facilities. Doing that obviously would have derailed the obvious quid pro quo we appear to have with Iran Iran that involves our trading control of Lebanon, Shiite domination of Iraq and a guarantee not to attack Iran's nuclear facilities or assist Israel in doing so for a ceiling on oil prices, an end to Iran's agitation in OPEC to end oil trading in dollars and a graceful exit from Iraq, as I've described before on these pages.

Apparently there's been a major change of heart in Washington, as the US has now agreed to sell Israel over 1,000 units of Guided Bomb Unit-39 (GBU-39) - a special weapon developed for knocking out fortified facilities located deep underground:

The $77 million shipment, which includes launchers and appurtenances, will allow the IAF to hit a lot more sites and more bunkers than they currently can. Although each bomb weighs 113 kilograms, its penetration capabilities equal those of a one ton bomb, according to professional literature.

Most U.S. Air Force aircraft are able to carry a pack of four of these bombs in place of a single one-ton bomb. The bomb’s small size allows a single-strike aircraft to carry more of the munitions than is possible utilizing currently available bomb units, thus increasing firepower, or, alternatively, allowing the aircraft to fly longer distances to deliver a single bomb.

During demonstrations, the GBU-39 - labeled by the manufacturer, Boeing, as a Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) - has successfully penetrated more than 1.8 meters of thick reinforced concrete with a 23-kilogram warhead. The GPS-guided weapon is said to have a 50-percent probability of hitting its intended target within 5-8 meters, which should minimize collateral damage.

Along with the new bombs, Israel is also slated to receive upgrades to the IDF's Patriot anti-aircraft missiles and enhanced integration with US anti-Missile defense early warning systems, as well as 28,000 LAW (Light Anti-Tank Weapon) tube launchers for land forces.

The LAWS rockets are particularly interesting. While their effectiveness against tanks is limited, they're quite adequate for dealing with the APCs and armored cars Hamas 'inherited' from the Palestinian Authority when Abbas' mob fled Gaza - and, at close range, with the sort of hardened bunkers Hamas and Hezbollah have set up as part of their military infrastructure.

So, why the sudden change of heart?

It could be a number of things, but here's how I see the pieces fitting together.

First, there's the Russian decision to refuse any cooperation with UN sanctions on Iran, to accelerate Iran's nuclear development and to seek formal security arrangements with Iran, including arms shipments, advisers and port facilities for Russian warships on the Caspian sea and the Persian Gulf.

I have a feeling that right up until the Georgia debacle, President Bush was being assured by Condi Rice and Robert Gates that Putin was still capable of being reasonable and that Russia was going to go along with efforts to curtail Iran's nuclear weapons program diplomatically. He knows different now, and although it's not politically expedient to admit it, he realizes that UN sanctions are a no hoper.Which indeed they always were.

Another factor is the actual placement of the proposed Russian naval bases, on the Caspian Sea astride the remaining energy pipeline into Europe and on Iranian-held Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. Once this is in place, it would not only protect Iran's missile launchers (which threaten the Saudi and UAE oil fields), nuclear sites and refineries from attack, it would challenge the US for control of the vital Persian Gulf oil routes.

As some of you might remember, I've spoken about the importance of Kharg Island before.

The Iranians themselves are getting increasingly intransigent, and no longer even giving the pretense of any cooperation with the IAEA.

And last but by no means least, the Saudis are getting increasingly antsy over Iran's presumptive nuclear status.

So Israel will get its weaponry...although an overflight over US controlled Iraqi territory might still be problematical.

Will they use it? Undoubtedly, if they see Iran on the verge of going nuclear. And the use of the new GBU-39s appears to jibe with my prior thoughts on what form an Israeli attack on Iran would take...small tactical groups of planes, flying in tight formation to minimize radar footprint flying along established air corridors, mimicking the call signals and radio traffic common to commercial airlines.

It's exactly how the Israelis have done this sort of thing successfully before.

I'd also expect a IDF strike would likely be proceeded by an Israeli missile strike on the Iranian surface to air missile sites and radar installations just before the Israeli planes hit their targets. Some will probably be delivered from the air outside the range of Iran's jet fighter aircraft (most of which are outdated and in bad shape),and others from Israel's Dolphin class submarines.

Time frame? Lessee what we got here. The wild card, of course, is how long it takes to deliver the GBU 39s.

Ramadan ends October 1st. Ehud Olmert is set to resign September 21st, less than a week from today. The Jewish High Holy Days begin with Rosh Hashanah on September 29th and run through the end of Yom Kippur, October 9th.Our election day is November 4th.

Based on that, I would guess one of two likely time frames. First during or after the Jewish High Holy Days, say October 1st through October 31st.

The second scenario is after our elections, November 5th through January 20th.

Part of the timing will depend on how the Israelis see the strikes on Iran impacting on our elections. I would assume that by now they've figured out that an Obama administration would be the second coming of Jimmy Carter, and that provided they have the new weaponry and everything else is ready, they'd hit Iran as an "October Surprise" if they perceive it will help McCain.

After November 4th, that won't be a factor anymore, and they would likely take out the Iranians before the new president takes office...and before the Russians stock the Bushehr plant with nuclear fuel in February or so.

In any event, I think we can expect things to heat up fairly soon. And as always, the Israelis will be roundly condemned as warmongers and aggressors in public...while the West privately breathes a huge sigh of relief.

Obama Tried To Delay US Troop Withdrawals From Iraq

Democrat presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama is in clear violation of the Logan Act. And he needs to be nailed for it.

For those of you who might have forgotten, the Logan Act prohibits anyone not authorized by the US government directly to do so from negotiating with foreign leaders on America's behalf.

Apparently The Chosen One, while campaigning publicly for a speedy withdrawal from Iraq tried to negotiate in private with the Iraqi government to delay a US withdrawal until he's in office. :

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops - and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion."

Of course, the real reason is that Obama wanted the political credit for bringing the troops home. And to get it, he was willing to go behind our own government's back and weaken their position with a foreign nation.

And here's a little something for Leftard anti-war folks who think Obama walks on water- Obama's new official position is that all US troops should be out within sixteen months. But what he was trying to do behind the scenes would have made that deadline impossible to meet:

Supposing he wins, Obama's administration wouldn't be fully operational before February - and naming a new ambassador to Baghdad and forming a new negotiation team might take longer still.

By then, Iraq will be in the throes of its own campaign season. Judging by the past two elections, forming a new coalition government may then take three months. So the Iraqi negotiating team might not be in place until next June.

Then, judging by how long the current talks have taken, restarting the process from scratch would leave the two sides needing at least six months to come up with a draft accord. That puts us at May 2010 for when the draft might be submitted to the Iraqi parliament - which might well need another six months
to pass it into law.

The one thing that strikes about the Chosen One isn't his 'charisma' or supposed 'intelligence.' It's his willingness say anything and to sell out just about anything and anybody whenever it's convenient for his own ambition and desires.

And that, by the way, is an almost textbook definition of a sociopath.

UPDATE: The McCain camp is demanding answers from Obama on this:

At this point, it is not yet clear what official American negotiations Senator Obama tried to undermine with Iraqi leaders, but the possibility of such actions is unprecedented. It should be concerning to all that he reportedly urged that the democratically-elected Iraqi government listen to him rather than the US administration in power. If news reports are accurate, this is an egregious act of political interference by a presidential candidate seeking political advantage overseas. Senator Obama needs to reveal what he said to Iraq's Foreign Minister during their closed door meeting. The charge that he sought to delay the withdrawal of Americans from Iraq raises serious questions about Senator Obama's judgment and it demands an explanation

Bye Bye,Britain

It's time we said good bye to Britain. They're officially on the road to become part of the new Caliphate, and to leave both the West and their special relationship with America behind.

According to The Sunday Times (UK) Britain has officially granted jurisdiction in Muslim civil cases to sharia courts:

ISLAMIC law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

The government has quietly sanctioned the powers for sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence.

Rulings issued by a network of five sharia courts are enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through the county courts or High Court.

Previously, the rulings of sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance among Muslims. It has now emerged that sharia courts with these powers have been set up in London, Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester with the network’s headquarters in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Two more courts are being planned for Glasgow and Edinburgh.

One of the glories of British civilization was the rule of English common law and the fact that it was applied equally to all British subjects, at least most of the time. No more, Bubba. Now,Brits who happen to be Muslim - particularly uppity women - will be subjected to the tender mercies of a code originated by a bunch of 7th century brigands...like it or not.

There are already Muslim 'no go ' areas in many British cities, and those enclaves are now to be governed by sharia rule. Look for this trend towards Islamist autonomy to continue in Britain, until they finally take over the entire country...or provoke a civil war trying.

I have to admit, I'm puzzled by this. It's one thing to be conquered forcibly, but it's quite another to cheerfully lay down for it and commit cultural suicide.

I'll plead guilty to having some ambivalent feelings towards Britain. Call it a tribal thing based on history, kind of like the Irish. But I still remember that this was the country who built an empire that the sun never set on, who imported western civilization to half the world, who stood up to Hitler alone and produced Drake,Wellington, Churchill and Thatcher.

Whatever happened to that Great Britain?

Nowadays,it seems like what's left is a bunch of whinging cowards who've dismantled their fleets, can't be relied on as an ally when things get tough and apparently can't wait to be shut of that 'special relationship' with the US.

It's not even like I've written them off so much as they've written themselves of, whimpering as they go.

So long, cousins. I can see the end from here and unless things change radically,it ain't pretty.

"Jesus Was A Community Organizer..."

The latest cute tagline the Donkeys are spouting is this zinger: "Jesus was a community organizer,Pilate was a governor.."

The point is to equate the Obamamessiah and the Democrats with Christ and Palin and the Republicans with Pilate.I can't think of a more disrespectful way to refer to the figure Christians revere as the Son of G-d and their Saviour.

As a matter of fact, G-d had a little something to say about that kind of idolatry,if you remember.

Even if we leave out Christ's spiritual position, which was considerable, he was a Rabbi and teacher who specifically never sought political power. To compare him with a pestilential agitator who's 'job' was to wheedle the government out of tax dollars for dubious 'programs' is not only blasphemous but factually incorrect.

As for Pontius Pilate, his actual job was PROCURATOR of Judea,NOT `governor'. A procurator was an official APPOINTED ( not elected,i.e Governor Palin) to administrate a conquered occupied territory by the Roman empire.

I suppose this little catchline was supposed to show how 'spiritual' the Donkeys are....but what it reveals is how empty of spirituality they truly are and how little respect for the religious they actually have.

Not to mention how little respect they have for the truth in general.

How The Palin Interview Was Edited By ABC

No big surprise, but the Sarah Palin interview with Chuckie over at ABC (now to be known as the Assist Barack Channel) heavily edited the interview to make Chuckie seema bit less hostile and make Governor Palin appear less knowledgeable, more uncertain, more of a war monger, and more of a fringe 'Christian fundamentalist.'

Overall, she did quite well but I think she was caught a bit off-guard by Gibson's rabid, aggressive approach. In the future, I think she'll be a lot more inclined to go on the offense against jackals like Chuckie and his friends.

I still don't understand quite why the McCain-Palin campaign chose to award her first interview to this lowlife hack when FOX was available, unless they felt it was best to subject her to what they knew we be a partisan hatchet job. As a matter of fact, they may have actually called it right. The interview was so openly biased, even UPI criticized ABC News for their blatant double standards, writing that ABC’s Gibson grilled Palin hard, but it may backfire.

Here's the actual transcript, courtesy of radio host Mark Levin's website via PJ Gladnik at Newsbusters, with the parts ABC edited out in boldface:

"The first edit shows Palin responding about meeting with foreign leaders
but this was actually in response to a question Gibson asked several questions
earlier:

GIBSON: Have you ever met a foreign head of state?

PALIN: There in the state of Alaska, our international trade
activities bring in many leaders of other countries.

GIBSON: And all governors deal with trade delegations.

PALIN: Right.

GIBSON: Who act at the behest of their governments.

PALIN: Right, right.

GIBSON: I’m talking about somebody who’s a head of state, who can
negotiate for that country. Ever met one?

PALIN: I have not and I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you. But, Charlie, again, we’ve got to remember what the desire is in this nation at this time. It is for no more politics as usual and somebody’s big, fat resume maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment, where, yes, they’ve had opportunities to meet heads of state … these last couple of weeks … it has been overwhelming to me that confirmation of the message that Americans are getting sick and tired of that self-dealing and kind of that closed door, good old boy network that has been the Washington elite.

Next we see that Palin was not nearly as hostile towards
Russia as was presented in the edited interview:

GIBSON: Let me ask you about some specific national security
situations.
PALIN: Sure.

GIBSON: Let’s start, because we are near Russia, let’s start with Russia and Georgia. The administration has said we’ve got to maintain the territorial integrity of Georgia. Do you believe the United States should try to restore Georgian sovereignty over South Ossetia and
Abkhazia?

PALIN: First off, we’re going to continue good relations with
Saakashvili there. I was able to speak with him the other day and giving him my commitment, as John McCain’s running mate, that we will be committed to Georgia. And we’ve got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable
and we have to keep…

GIBSON: You believe unprovoked.

PALIN: I do believe unprovoked and we have got to keep our eyes on
Russia, under the leadership there. I think it was unfortunate. That
manifestation that we saw with that invasion of Georgia shows us some steps backwards that Russia has recently taken away from the race toward a more democratic nation with democratic ideals. That’s why we have to keep an eye on Russia.

And, Charlie, you’re in Alaska. We have that very narrow maritime
border between the United States, and the 49th state, Alaska, and Russia. They are our next door neighbors. We need to have a good relationship with them. They’re very, very important to us and they are our next door neighbor.

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the
last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia
from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.

GIBSON: What insight does that give you into what they’re doing
in Georgia?

PALIN: Well, I’m giving you that perspective of how small our
world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relation with all of these countries, especially Russia. We will not repeat a Cold War. We must have good relationship with our allies, pressuring, also, helping us to remind Russia that it’s in their benefit, also, a mutually beneficial relationship for us all to be getting along.

We also see from Palin's following remark, which was also edited out,
that she is far from some sort of latter day Cold Warrior which the edited interview made her seem to be:

We cannot repeat the Cold War. We are thankful that, under
Reagan, we won the Cold War, without a shot fired, also. We’ve learned lessons from that in our relationship with Russia, previously the Soviet Union.

We will not repeat a Cold War. We must have good relationship
with our allies, pressuring, also, helping us to remind Russia that it’s in
their benefit, also, a mutually beneficial relationship for us all to be getting along.

Palin's extended remarks about defending our NATO allies were
edited out to make it seem that she was ready to go to war with Russia.

GIBSON: And under the NATO treaty, wouldn’t we then have to go to war
if Russia went into Georgia?

PALIN: Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO
ally, is if another country is attacked, you’re going to be expected to be
called upon and help.

But NATO, I think, should include Ukraine, definitely, at this
point and I think that we need to — especially with new leadership coming in on January 20, being sworn on, on either ticket, we have got to make sure that we strengthen our allies, our ties with each one of those NATO members.

We have got to make sure that that is the group that can be
counted upon to defend one another in a very dangerous world today.

GIBSON: And you think it would be worth it to the United
States, Georgia is worth it to the United States to go to war if Russia were to invade.

PALIN: What I think is that smaller democratic countries that
are invaded by a larger power is something for us to be vigilant against. We have got to be cognizant of what the consequences are if a larger power is able to take over smaller democratic countries.

And we have got to be vigilant. We have got to show the
support, in this case, for Georgia. The support that we can show is economic sanctions perhaps against Russia, if this is what it leads to.
It doesn’t have to lead to war and it doesn’t have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.

His mission, if it is to control energy supplies, also, coming
from and through Russia, that’s a dangerous position for our world to be in, if we were to allow that to happen.

That answer presented Palin as a bit too knowledgeable for the purposes
of ABC News and was, of course, edited out. Palin's answers about a nuclear Iran
were carefully edited to the point where she was even edited out in mid-sentence
to make it seem that Palin favored unilateral action against that country:

GIBSON: Let me turn to Iran. Do you consider a nuclear Iran to be an
existential threat to Israel?

PALIN: I believe that under the leadership of Ahmadinejad, nuclear
weapons in the hands of his government are extremely dangerous to everyone on
this globe, yes.

GIBSON: So what should we do about a nuclear Iran? John McCain
said the only thing worse than a war with Iran would be a nuclear Iran. John Abizaid said we may have to live with a nuclear Iran. Who’s right?

PALIN: No, no. I agree with John McCain that nuclear weapons in
the hands of those who would seek to destroy our allies, in this case, we’re talking about Israel, we’re talking about Ahmadinejad’s comment about Israel being the “stinking corpse, should be wiped off the face of the earth,” that’s atrocious. That’s unacceptable.

GIBSON: So what do you do about a nuclear Iran?

PALIN: We have got to make sure that these weapons of mass destruction,
that nuclear weapons are not given to those hands of Ahmadinejad, not that he
would use them, but that he would allow terrorists to be able to use them. So we have got to put the pressure on Iran and we have got to count on
our allies to help us, diplomatic pressure.

GIBSON: But, Governor, we’ve threatened greater sanctions
against Iran for a long time. It hasn’t done any good. It hasn’t stemmed their nuclear program.

PALIN: We need to pursue those and we need to implement those.
We cannot back off. We cannot just concede that, oh, gee, maybe they’re going to have nuclear weapons, what can we do about it. No way, not Americans. We do not have to stand for that.

Laughably, a remark by Gibson that indicated he agreed with Palin was
edited out:

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words
when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and
I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.

But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments,
was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let
us pray that we are on God’s side. That’s what that comment was all about,
Charlie. And I do believe, though, that this war against extreme Islamic
terrorists is the right thing. It’s an unfortunate thing, because war is hell and I hate war, and, Charlie,
today is the day that I send my first
born, my son, my teenage son overseas with his Stryker brigade, 4,000 other
wonderful American men and women, to fight for our country, for democracy, for
our freedoms.

Charlie, those are freedoms that too many of us just take for
granted. I hate war and I want to see war ended. We end war when we see victory, and we do see victory in sight in Iraq.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but
you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”

Gibson took her point about Lincoln's words but we wouldn't know that
by watching the interview since it was left on the cutting room floor. I urge
everybody to see just how the unedited version of the first interview compared
to what we saw on television by checking out the full transcript.
It is a fascinating look into media manipulation via skillful
editing."

Note to the McCain-Palin: The next time there's an interview scheduled with one of these rabid jackals, have your own cameraman in the room at the same time so they can't get away with this kind o' crap in the future. The technology is cheap and easy to use these days, and the embarrassment of being exposed like this might just keep them a little more honest if they know they're being filmed.

"Dear Mr. Obama...."

An Iraqi war vet has a personal message for Barack Obama...priceless.

Pakistan's Army Ordered To Attack US Forces If They Violate Pakistan's Border

This could get a bit sticky.

"RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army has been ordered to retaliate against any action
by foreign troops inside the country, Geo News quoted ISPR spokesman Maj Gen
Athar Abbas as saying on Thursday night.

Shakil Shaikh adds from
Islamabad: Pakistan`s military commanders resolved to defend the country`s
borders without allowing any external forces to conduct operations inside
Pakistan. {..}

General Kayani has already rebuffed the American policy
of including Pakistani territory in their operations against terrorists and
those hiding in the areas bordering Afghanistan. Reports say that the US
President Bush has allowed air raids from drones and ground operations in
Pakistani areas including FATA
."(shorthand for 'Federally
Administered Tribal Areas' ie Waziristan -ff)

Fascinating - here's an army that's refusing to clean up areas effectively under the control of al-Qaeda and the Taliban who are bombing all over the country, yet they're willing to go into action against US and NATO forces!

The big question is whether this is being done for political effect or if the Pakistanis are serious. If it's simply political posturing, no problem. If they are serious, they have the ability to cut off the major part of the flow of supplies to our troops in Afghanistan, as we've seen.

If the Pakis are silly enough to go into action against us,then I suppose all bets are off. There are three options: one, we can retreat and pull out of Afghanistan; two, we can continue to allow Pakistan's nationals to attack us over the Afghan border and continue the status quo as the Pakistan situation continues to ferment and worsen or three, we can do something we've been putting off and actually confort one of the major havens of Islamist jihad and deal with it.

If we're forced to opt for door number three, I'd recommend a tactical strike at Pakistan's nukes facilities and major damage to their air and ground forces ( perhaps in conjuction with India), followed by the clearing of a corridor from the seacoast through the Torkham border crossing so we can keep our troops in Afghanistan supplied, instead of General Barack Obama's grand strategy of invading Pakistan's North West Frontier provinces and Waziristan with a couple of brigades.

Hopefully it won't come to that, but if it does, here's a chance to kill two birds with one stone and drain part of the swamp..so long as we don't get involved in any farcical notions of 'nation building' while we're at it.

Obama's New Ad Strikes A New Low

Obama's latest masterpiece mocks John McCain for not being able to send an e-mail or use a computer. Ho ho,funny eh?

Except when you find out that the reason McCain doesn't do these things is because the war time injuries he suffered in the service of his country stop him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes.

So...what do we have to say about a presidential candidate who approved something like this? What does it tell us about his humanity, and more importantly, his judgment?

If this is what the Obama campaign means by more forceful attacks, I say bring it on.America is getting to know the Chosen One better with every day that passes.

The Palin Interview

Sarah Palin went on ABC with Charlie Gibson fo r three days of interviews, the first of which aired last night.

I have to admit, I have trouble understanding why the GOP campaign chose to award this plum to ABC, where Palin could be expected to be subjected to a biased and highly edited session as opposed to FOX. Nevertheless, she did fine, in spite of nasty attempts to misquote her and mischaracterize her by Gibson.

I wonder how Obama would do with questions about his old church, deliberate attempts to misquote him and 4 follow up questions in rapid succession...not that we'll ever see that on any of the dinosaur networks!

She handled Chuckie's elitest attitude superbly throughout:

Bythe way, just for the record, Gibson is either more than a little confused or simply lying through his teeth as to what the Bush Doctrine is . I'll leave to you to decide which.
