Forum:What Is Your Prediction For The Outcome Of The Trayvon Martin Trial?

The jury for the Trayvon Martin case has been seated...six women, five white and 1 Hispanic.

What Is Your Prediction For The Outcome Of  The Trayvon Martin Trial?

Rhymes With Right: Frankly, I expect the jury to hang. Surely one juror will be adamantly supportive of conviction after the trial is completed. Surely one will have unshakeable reasonable doubt. Lord only knows what the remaining four will have to say -- but it does not matter. Just having those two is a recipe for a hung jury.

What happens after the verdict will be more telling than the verdict itself.

Despite predictions by the racist lawyer representing the Martin family, whites will not riot over the outcome. With encouragement from racist leader Al Sharpton, blacks will likely riot over this outcome. The Obama Regime will not wait for the state of Florida to conduct another round of this political show trial, but will instead conduct its own show trial in federal court -- trying to make it clear to its core constituencies that it cares about minorities and is sticking it to whitey, despite the fact that the Hispanic Zimmerman is 1/8 black and has the no more white ancestry than Barack Hussein Obama. Zimmerman will ultimately be railroaded in federal court even though there really is no federal issue here and even though the evidence is ambiguous enough to make his version of the story believable and the government version doubtful. The minute that the two major forces of evil in contemporary society took up the Trayvon banner, this outcome has been inevitable.

Weekend Monkey:I tell yah, primates. You have to get a clue and throw out the idea of this making common sense and rub your snouts in the warm, fetid aroma of this stuff making political sense! Being a political animal, I got a real nose for this kinda stuff.

Looky here..why do you think the Bamster  jumped into this mess with both feet, hmm? And why do you think that after he did that, all of a sudden the city manager ( who just  happens to share a similar complexion and party with the Bamster) fires the white police chief and everyone started running around like baboons in heat to appoint a special prosecutor, come up with some kinda case? It's all about pleasing one of my Democrat's chief constituencies. Politics, primates...EEEEEE-YAHHHH! Hee hee hee!

But since Trayvon is in gangsta paradise right now, or somewhere else, there ain't really much of a case. Trayvon ain't talkin' to anyone. Only Zimmerman really knows what happened, so normally he'd walk. Also, the prosecution knows they probably ain't gonna get a conviction But that can't happen because the politics won't work and will make all the politicians involved look like a bunch of red-assed, red faced mandrills, y'know?

So they'll use what weapons they have.

Zim-Zim is one broke white Hispanic. Lawyers gotta get paid, they don't lie and connive for free unless they work for the government. Since Zimmerman's chances of coming up with enough additional shekels to keep him from playing drop the soap with a buncha hard time lifers is somewhere between slim and none,  and his lawyers could bail and leave him in the hands of the PD, which would be like putting Mr. Bill  in charge of a girl's school. So the prosecution has leverage. Also, Zim Zim has to know that even if he beats this rap, the Bamster has Holder and the DOJ working on a civil rights case against him for using his gun instead of  letting Trayvon Martin play football with his skull. So there's that going too.

I say it's at least 60-40 we don't even get a verdict on this one.  Zim Zim's lawyers want to move on to more profitable capers where they might get paid. The DA doesn't want to deal with either the hoo-miliation or the possible street theater that would probably result from a hung jury or an acquittal..

So I say Zim Zim cops a plea for a lesser charge, (say involuntary manslaughter) in exchange for a short sentence doing easy white collar  time somewhere, the DOJ calling the doggies off and maybe even a waiver of civil liability from  the Martin family, or what passes for it. Everybody gets a little somethin somethin, everybody saves face. Yeah,  and justice or something that  smells enough like it so it doesn't really matter prevails. Happy Happy Joy Joy!

Later, Primates!

JoshuaPundit: No way I'm topping that.

The Council Has Spoken!! This Week's Watcher's Council Results

Alea iacta est...the Council has spoken, the votes have been cast, and we have the results for this week's Watcher's Council match up.

Is it is, or is it ain't?

This week's winner, The Noisy Room's  The Sandbagging of America   is a sharp, well written examination of Edward Snowden and the NSA scandal, and her conclusion is that it's definitely not what it's been painted as. Here's a slice:

I was wrong. When I first heard that Edward Snowden was exposing the NSA on PRISM, I thought, good… let it all come out. After all the scandals and crap Obama has been getting away with, like most of America, I wanted something to come out. To get some exposure for the bad guys. I was played.

Then I sat down, listened to my gut and thought about it for a bit.

My first inkling that I had it wrong, was when John Bolton came out and called Snowden a traitor and said he was guilty of an act of war. Bolton is someone I admire a great deal. He contended that Snowden had given ‘aid and comfort to the enemy.’ And indeed, he has.

I then had a discussion with my friend Trevor Loudon of New Zeal. He and Cliff Kincaid have looked extensively at Snowden and his connections to the avowed Marxist, Glenn Greenwald. If you will remember, Snowden released his revelations to Greenwald, The Guardian and The Washington Post (both papers are liberal rags). You should know Greenwald, he addressed the International Socialist Organization‘s Socialism 2011 conference in Chicago:

Al-Qaeda hoped a single attack on U.S. soil, very minimal in scope compared to the level of deaths that the United States has been bringing to the world for decades–from Vietnam to illegal wars in Central America–would trigger bankruptcy-inducing policies. Ironically, the only thing that can truly strengthen America’s national security is a weakening of America.

There is a valid argument that Snowden’s betrayal is a case of Chinese espionage. The Russians are also offering asylum. He is backed and supported by Russia Today, Iranian Press TV and by Al Jazeera. Julian Assange of WikiLeaks fame is also supporting him. George Soros’ Free Press and CODEPINK are right there cheering Snowden on. It’s a who’s who of bad guys on Snowden’s team. But wait, it gets better. Snowden’s story is Swiss cheese for spooks.

Here are a few inconvenient facts on Snowden:
  • The guy is a high school dropout. How did he get a classified position with the NSA?
  • He started out at the NSA as a janitor.
  • He learned Chinese while at the agency.
  • He made a whopping 122k at the NSA (he falsely claimed it was 200k).
  • He claimed he broke both legs while in special forces training. Not exactly… He was at Fort Benning when he broke them, while trying to get into the X-Ray program.
  • Snowden was at the NSA for three months – count em’ and then tell me how he was promoted from janitor to technical analyst. Really? Don’t think so.
  • He was a Ron Paul supporter, but voted twice for Obama.

In our non-Council category, the winner by a nose was Mark Steyn with Big Politically Correct Brother  submitted by The Noisy Room. It's pure Steyn, a comparison of the intense government scrutiny of conservative groups  versus the the sort of non-scrutiny given to Muslims and Muslim institutions.

OK, here are this week’s full results:

Obama To Send U.S. Troops To Egypt To Suppress Riots Against Muslim Brotherhood Regime

There's one sure thing about President Obama that you can always take to the bank. He will go to any lengths to install, fund, protect and defend autocratic Muslim Brotherhood regimes.

In Egypt, the increasingly totalitarian Muslim Brotherhood regime under Mohammed Morsi is encountering more and more protests from what's left of the pro-democracy factions, and a major crackdown is imminent, complete with mobs of regime supporting thugs that President Obama found so abhorrent back in the Mubarak era.

Only this time, President Obama is prepared to send U.S. troops with riot training into the middle of this festering cauldron to risk their lives to protect the Islamist regime:

(KCEN) -- A group of soldiers are preparing for their deployment to Egypt with riot training on post.

They're planning ahead for violent protests or riots and the possibility of protecting the country's border with Israel.

Soldiers encountered Molotov cocktails and other dangerous items in the training.

Lt. Matthew Wilkinson says, "Just what I've seen over the course of the past week than we were a week ago."

PFC Perez Alexander says, "We want to be as professional as possible... Know what we're doing."

They wrap up training today before preparing to ship out in the near future.

Notice the spin here, that the troops are planning for "the possibility of protecting the country's border with Israel."

That's how the Obama regime might sell it, with the side benefit for them of raising anger towards Israel from the usual low information voters. But the truth of the matter is that Israel has never requested or needed U.S. troops to protect its borders, its own military being more than equal to that task. And the Israelis, in any event, have already finished their security fence on the Egyptian border.

This is being done to protect Egypt's Islamist regime.

In a vicious bit of irony, the training is being held at Fort Hood Texas...site of the murders of U.S. troops by Islamist jihadi Major Nidal Hasan.

How the Gang of Eight Bill Will Fast Track Illegal Alien Citizenship

 http://images.sodahead.com/polls/001013153/5026917592_illegal_aliens_vote_democrat_xlarge.jpeg

By Geoff Britain

Cntrary to what we're being told, the Gang of Eight amnesty bill contains some interesting loopholes to allow a great many illegal aliens to be put on a fast track to citizenship if the bill's passed

Byron York explains some of the ways they're going to do it:

A little-noticed exception in the Gang of Eight bill provides a fast track for many — possibly very many — currently illegal immigrants. Under a special provision for immigrants who have labored at least part-time in agriculture, that fast track could mean permanent residency in the U.S., and then citizenship, in half the time Rubio said. And not just for the immigrants themselves — their spouses and children, too.

A second provision in the legislation creates another fast track for illegal immigrants who came to the United States before they were 16 — the so-called Dreamers. The concept suggests youth, but the bill has no age limit for such immigrants — or their spouses and children — and despite claims that they must go to college or serve in the military to be eligible, there is an exception to that requirement as well.

First the agricultural workers. The Gang of Eight bill creates something called a blue card, which would be granted to illegal immigrant farm workers who come forward and pass the various background checks the bill requires for all illegal immigrants. Instead of the 10-year wait Rubio described in media appearances, blue card holders could receive permanent legal status in just five years.

How does an illegal immigrant qualify for a blue card? If, after passing the background checks, he can prove that he has worked in agriculture for at least 575 hours — about 72 eight-hour days — sometime in the two years ending December 31, 2012, he can be granted a blue card. That’s it. His spouse and children can be granted blue cards, too — it can all be done with one application.

The immigrant who has done none of the things the Dream Act supposedly requires "may still be fast tracked if he can “demonstrate compelling circumstances for the inability to satisfy the requirement.” The bill does not specify what those compelling circumstances might be; the discretion for such decisions lies with the Secretary of Homeland Security.

There’s more. If an illegal immigrant is apprehended by authorities after the passage of the bill, and appears to qualify for blue card status, the law requires the Department of Homeland Security to give him a “reasonable opportunity” to apply for blue card status. He cannot be deported while his application is under review. Even if he is in removal proceedings, the bill says, the Secretary of Homeland Security is required to allow him to apply for blue card status, and immigration authorities are required to “terminate [removal] proceedings without prejudice.”

The bill’s supporters point out that the Gang of Eight would limit the period of time in which illegal immigrants can apply for a blue card. That’s true; the bill specifies that applications have to be filed in the year after the last of the rules enforcing the new immigration law have gone into effect. But the bill also gives the Secretary of Homeland Security the discretion to extend that period by another year and a half if she or he determines that “additional time is required” for the applications. The extension can also be granted for any other “good cause.”

The next step happens five years after the Gang of Eight bill is enacted. At that time, the legislation requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to change the blue card holder’s status to that of permanent resident if the immigrant has worked in agriculture at least 150 days in each of three of those five years since the bill became law. A work day is defined as 5.75 hours. Also, the immigrant can qualify for permanent residence with less than three years, of 150 work days each, if he can show that he was disabled, ill, or had to deal with the “special needs of a child” during that time period. He can also shorten the requirement if “severe weather conditions” prevented him for working for a long period of time, or if he was fired from his agricultural job — provided it was not for just cause — and then couldn’t find work."

Bottom line? In both cases, agricultural workers and Dreamers, there are major loopholes that are a far cry from what we were told by Senator Rubio when he claimed thta illegal aliens would 'go to the end of the line'for legal residency and citizenship.

Zimmerman Jury Seated As Judge Rules Against Prosecution's Attempted Exclusion Of White Women

Voir dire has finally been completed and a jury has finally been selected for the trial of George Zimmerman, accused of second degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin.

The jury consists of 5 white women and one Hispanic woman.

The prosecution did itself no favors today by trying to exclude white women from the jury completely simply because of their race. After 4 women in a row were rejected by the prosecutions after no questions except their names, Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara succeeded in getting the judge to rule in favor of race/gender neutral selection.

O'Mara rejected one black woman juror after finding she knows someone involved in the case and had posted jury summons on Facebook, something the prosecution agreed to.

In Florida, only crimes with the possibility of a death sentence merit 12 jurors. George Zimmerman faces a maximum sentence of life, Although, don't ask me why six rather than an odd number...

The judge, Debra Nelson has still not ruled yet on whether expert testimony about a recording of screams heard on 911 calls made during the struggle will be allowed.

The prosecutors want their expert to testify it was Martin screaming on the calls. Several expert for Zimmerman's defense have said there is not enough audio to determine who the screams are coming from, and that trying to determine that from what's on the tape contradicts all standard procedure. That ruling will likely come tomorrow.

Putin To UK PM:'Syrian Rebels The Same As Those Who Killed UK Soldier In London'

Russian President Vladimir Putin had some words to say at the G8 summit to UK PM David Cameron about the proposed arming of the Syrian rebels, as Russia blocked a joint G8 resolution on ousting the Assad regime:

Arming the Syrian rebels could deliver weapons into the hands of the sort of people who killed Drummer Lee Rigby, Vladimir Putin warned.

The Russian president drew a direct parallel with the "violent assassination" of the soldier in Woolwich as he set out his hostility to Western efforts to aid the opposition to Basher Assad's regime.

Mr Putin spoke out at a press conference marking the close of the G8 summit in Northern Ireland which produced a joint position from world leaders that could pave the way for a peace conference to find a way out of the deadly struggle for control of the Middle Eastern country. [...]

Britain and France - both in the G8 - led efforts to lift an EU arms embargo but Prime Minister David Cameron insists no decision to do so has been taken amid a political backlash at Westminster against any such escalation of British involvement.

Asked about the issue, Mr Putin, speaking through an interpreter, defended his decision to continue supplying weapons to the regime, which he said was no more than completing legal contracts.

And in a direct message to Mr Cameron, he added: "Recently the British people suffered a huge loss. It was a tragedy next to his barracks on the streets of London. A violent assassination, a very brutal killing of a British serviceman.

"Clearly the opposition is not composed all of this but many of them are exactly the same as the ones who perpetrated the killing in London.

"If we equip these people, if we arm them what is going to control and verify who is going to have these weapons, including in Europe as well.

"So we call all our partners, before making this dangerous step, think about it very carefully."

Putin is exactly correct. The Syrian jihadis have the same ideology and goals as the British Muslims who grabbed a British soldier in London in broad daylight, chopped his head off while they screamed 'Allahu akbar' and then talked to horrified passerbys about how it was done for the glory of Islam.

While Russia is making a huge mistake aiding and abetting Iran, there's no longer any room for us to badmouth him. Putin, of course, comes from a country with a 400 year history of fighting jihad. The West, particularly President Obama, has gone from at least some degree of resistance to jihad to arming, funding and and training it.

President Obama Insults Christian Parachial Schools

 http://www.realnewsreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/obama-idiot-300x223.jpg

This is one of those stories that is huge overseas but is not being reported here at all.

Our president, true to form has gone road trip, ducking  out of Washington when there's real work to be done. He's left  things like the Amnesty bill to capable minions like Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer. After hitting the European continent with Michelle and the entourage at the taxpayer's expense, he stopped in at the G8 summit in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

And made a speech at Belfast's Waterfront Hall, where he called Christian parochial schools 'segregated schools' and said:

“If towns remain divided—if Catholics have their schools and buildings and Protestants have theirs, if we can’t see ourselves in one another and fear or resentment are allowed to harden—that too encourages division and discourages cooperation.”

Needless to say, Catholics and Protestants through out the UK are outraged.

First, the Buffoon-in-chief is obviously ignorant of the major role parochial schools and yes, religious figures played in bringing a degree of peace to Northern Ireland.

And second, riddle me this: most Muslim madrassahs openly teach Islamist superiority, hatred of unbelievers, the suppression of women and death for apostates and homosexuals (it's in the Qur'an). Islamic anti-semitism is so common in mosque sermons both in America and in every Muslim country the president has ever visited as to be a non-story.

Has our president even once referred to mosques or madrassahs as institutions that 'encourage division and discourage cooperation'? Not to mention the sort of rhetoric regularly issuing out of Reverend Wrights' church in Chicago that he was a member of for two decades?

It's bad enough he's attempting to violate the First Amendment rights of religious institutions here in America. Now he has to thoughtlessly insult them overseas. And selectively. He'd never say anything remotely critical of Muslim institutions at home or abroad.

In terms of academic achievement and producing moral and well educated citizens, America's Jewish and Christian parochial schools eclipse the much better funded public schools in America to an alarming degree, at far less cost per pupil.

It would be refreshing if just maybe, President Obama spent some serious time thinking about why parochial schools do such a stellar job instead of gratuitously insulting them.

But I wouldn't hold my breath.

My apologies to Catholics and Protestants in the UK. We unfortunately have a clueless president who doesn't know how to behave when he's in someone else's neighborhood.

Head Fake - The New Senate 'Border Control ' Amendment is A Total Fraud

The latest chapter in the Gang of Eight amnesty bill involves a 'compromise' amendment on border control supposedly designed to address concerns of Senate Republicans and get them some cover to line up behind amnesty.

The amendment, put out by Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) and John Hoeven (R-ND) is one of the most bogus legislative shams I've ever seen, let alone seen grown men propose. It's sole purpose is not border security, but what amounts to a political condom to allow Senators who vote for amnesty to go home and say 'hey, I voted for greater border security' while still indulging themselves with the prostitute called amnesty.

The bill does nothing at all for border security. It establishes '90% apprehension' as a goal, not a hard trigger, without even defining what apprehension actually consists of, or who would make that determination that the 'goal' has been met... the Secretary of Homeland Security, Congress, or some other administrative agency. It calls for the hiring of 20,000 new border patrol agents without any concrete requirements on when that happens or how they're going to be used. And - wait for it- it restates the desirability of actually doing something that is already U.S. law, the building of a 700 mile border fence.

You might remember that one. It was a bill signed into law by President Bush and is supposedly the law of the land. A grand total of 36 miles were completed before democrats gained control of Congress in 2006 and stopped the project dead in its tracks.

None of this holds up the legalization of illegal aliens here in America. As I pointed out earlier, that even includes criminals.

There's a major rush going on in the Senate to stampede this through.I'm guessing it's because of a new report from the Congressional Budget Office that the amnesty bill is only going to decrease the flow of illegal aliens into America by about 25%. Here's a quote directly from the report itself:

"Unauthorized residents would find it harder both to enter the country and to find employment while unauthorized. However, other aspects of the bill would probably increase the number of unauthorized residents — in particular, people overstaying their visas issued under the new programs for temporary workers," the CBO report said, adding that the net annual flow of unauthorized residents would decrease by about 25 percent compared to current law.

The CBO report also says that the amnesty bill will grow the deficit, increase unemployment and reduce the wages of American workers for the next decade.

More legal Hispanic immigrants get this than you might think. They instinctively get that it's a housekeeper, a nanny, a delivery driver or an elder care giver earning between $35,000 and $40,000 or so per year with benefits that's going to have to compete with one of the unskilled newly legalized 'immigrants' willing to work for 40% less with worse working conditions.

It's simple to figure out how this is supposed to work. The amnesty gets passed first. No fines or back taxes are going to be collected because the illegal aliens will plead poverty and aren't going to claim income they made off the books for the privilege of paying taxes on it. Would you?

They will definitely be able to receive ObamaCare as well as all other social welfare benefits. As legal residents, they can't be denied, not should they be.

And almost as soon as they're legalized, the next push will be to speed up that path top citizenship so they can vote. Can't you just hear the president or Senator Schumer whining, 'they're living here, they're on a path to citizenship, why can't they vote?'.

The process will finish with chain migration and family unification. If there are 11.5 million illegal aliens here, count on that number increasing to25 or 20 million once that process gets started.

This is 'hope and change' none of us were even asked if we wanted. It's time it ended..ya basta, enough.

Any congressman that votes for this of whatever party is not only unworthy of public trust and public office, but should be shunned, insulted and jeered at in public on the streets of America as the self-seeking weasel he or she is.

Pro Amnesty Senators Rally In Support Of Illegal Alien Drunk Drivers

http://www.carinsurancechamps.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/carcrash.jpg

Mickey Kaus has a column that highlights an interesting point in Senate democrat's amnesty supporters' fight against Senator John Cornyn's amendment to the Gang of Eight amnesty bill for illegal aliens. It appears that the language in the amendment calling for amnesty ( or to use the euphemism used in the bill, RPI or “registered provisional immigrant”)for certain illegal aliens who have committed crimes here in America is a major deal killer:

I'm told, by a reliable and well-placed source, that a good deal of the Democratic opposition to John Cornyn's proposed amendment to the Gang of 8 bill has nothing to do with border security. It has to do with DUIs. Specifically, Cornyn's amendment would bar illegal immigrants with misdemeanor DUI convictions from "probationary" legal status, which is the immediate legalization offered by Marco Rubio, et al, to most of the 11 million undocumented immigrants now living in the U.S. For the pro-amnesty side, the exclusion of DUI offenders is apparently a deal-killer. There must be a lot of them!

Pro-Gang Democrats (and Republicans) understandably don't want to publicize their DUI defense. DUI offenders are not an inherently popular group, and accidents in which undocumented immigrant drivers kill innocent civilians tend to be well publicized. It's not a coincidence that Obama's executive mini-amnesty of so-called "Dreamers"-issued before the 2012 election-claimed to exclude DUI offenders. But the broader Gang of 8 legislation, written after the election, allows two free misdemeanors-apparently including DUIs-before an illegal immigrant is disqualified.

But wait a minute...isn't this racist profiling?

That's not what the notorious Rightwing NPR thinks:

The influx of Hispanic immigrants to some parts of the U.S. has led to a problem on the highways. In many states, Hispanics account for a disproportionate number of drunk driving deaths. In North Carolina where the Latino population has grown by more than a third in this decade, alcohol-related crashes have become a leading killer of Latinos. And as NPR's Adam Hochberg reports, community groups are trying to reverse that trend.

Nationwide, Latinos rank second only to Native Americans and their alcohol death rate on the highway. The extent of the problem varies from state to state, but community leaders say it seems worse in places where Latinos have newly immigrated. At Al Pueblo, a Hispanic advocacy group in North Carolina, safety director Tony Ascion(ph) says Latino drunk drivers tend to be young men in the U.S. without their families, people who have a lot of free time and a lot of what Ascion calls, machismo.

NPR is doing their best to present this as a mere temporary problem coming from unusual circumstances. In fact, it's pretty culturally rooted.

Especially in young men whom hail from rural Mexico, especially but not exclusively Norteños,(Mexicans from the Northern border states) where drinking and driving doesn't have the same context it does here. It's considered macho for a man to be able to hold his liquor and get behind the wheel. And even when you're caught, an inconvenient DUI can be fixed provided you didn't severely injure of kill anyone (and sometimes even if you did) if you have sufficient connections or pay a suitable amount of mordida to the local police.

There are literally thousands of Americans who've had the experience of suffering injuries or property damage at the hands of illegal aliens, intoxicated or otherwise.

The language of Senator Cornyn's amendment, actually pretty tame, doesn't just single out drunk drivers:

Prohibits illegal aliens convicted of serious misdemeanors, such as domestic violence, aggravated assault, child abuse, violation of a protection order, and drunk driving, from receiving RPI status.

Child abuse, domestic violence, multiple DUIs and aggravated assault are apparently now minor personalty quirks unworthy of serious consideration...not to mention illegally entering the U.S. in the first place!

As for more serious crimes, in California for example, where it's estimated that something like 25% of all illegal aliens in the U.S. reside, they are 5.45 of the population, but around 13% of the prison population. And that's not including the recent ICE release thousands of illegal aliens with criminal records.

Amnesty is a lousy idea with a proven track record of failure anyway. But uf we're talking about a path to citizenship, doesn't it make sense to exclude people who have already shown they have little regard for the responsibilities involved?

California Pols Get Raise For 'Balancing Budget' - While Deficit's At $127.2 Billion!

California's almost entirely Democrat ruling class just received a 5% raise from a State panel  appointed by Governor Jerry Brown:

A state panel on Wednesday approved a 5% pay raise for Gov. Jerry Brown, legislators and other state elected officials, restoring the salary level they received before it was cut during last year’s budget problems.

The California Citizens Compensation Commission also agreed to increase the state’s contribution to the health benefits of state elected officials by 10%, restoring half of the amount cut in 2009.

The panel’s action boosts the salary of Brown from $165,288 to $173,987 in December, and increases legislators’ pay from $90,520 to $95,291 at the same time. Raises will also be provided to the state attorney general, state treasurer and other constitutional officers.

During the last four years, the commission had cut the pay of 132 elected state officials by 23% in reaction to the recession and its damage to the budget, which resulted in furloughs for rank-and-file state workers.

But commissioners noted Wednesday that the economy has improved, the budget has been balanced with a $1 billion reserve fund, and Brown has offered a 4.5% pay raise phased in over two years to the largest state employee union.

“The governor has done a fantastic job of getting the tax initiative passed and the economic climate, while not completely restored, is on the right trajectory," said Commissioner Wilma Wallace. "And I believe that it is important to acknowledge that the Legislature has stepped up and that they deserve to have the 5% reinstated."

The 'tax initiative', of course was a huge tax increase.

Just one problem, however. The State's independent auditors reveal that the budget isn't balanced at all!

A financial report issued by state auditors finds that the state of California is in the red by an unsustainable $127.2 billion.

The report says that the state’s negative status increased that year, largely because it spent $1.7 billion more than it received in revenues and wound up with an accumulated deficit of just under $23 billion in fiscal year 2011-2012, the Sacramento Bee stated.

Gov. Jerry Brown has referred to the deficit and other budget gaps, mostly money owed to schools, as a “wall of debt” totaling more than $30 billion, the Sacramento Bee reported.

About half of the deficit came from the state issuing general obligation bonds and then giving the money to local governments and school districts for public works projects. The report listed California’s long-term obligations at $167.9 billion, nearly half of which ($79.9 billion) were in general obligation bonds, with another $30.8 billion in revenue bonds, the Sacramento Bee reported.

And the economic climate? Several large cities are in bankruptcy proceedings, the real U6 unemployment rate is around 15%, the state is overrun with illegal aliens and businesses are still moving out of the state at a brisk clip.

As another sign of how 'balanced' the budget is, the state legislature has already started work on destroying Proposition 13, the state initiative passed by Californians back in the 1970's to mandate that the insane property tax increases the state was imposing at that time needed to be limited in scope and passed in the legislature by by a 2/3 majority. Th enew law, already passed in the Asembly will go to the state senate, where it will also likely pass.

Now that California's Democrats effectively own the state, Prop 13 will soon be history, causing the real estate market to dip further as people unload their homes and rental property and flee to other locations.

The idea of awarding these cretins with more money for dismantling the economy of what used to be one of the richest and most prosperous states in the union is beyond ludicrous.

Theft And Contempt - Los Angeles Bans Plastic Grocery Bags

The Los Angeles City Council voted 11-1 yesterday to ban the use of disposable plastic bags in stores and supermarkets.

“We’ve seen plastic bags clogging our gutters, polluting our rivers and piling up on our beaches,” Councilmember José Huizar said in a statement. “The time for the City of Los Angeles to take action to protect our environment is now. And every big city in the nation can follow our lead.”

The argument here is that these plastic bags are 'bad for the environment' because they take so long to decompose. The sort of foam-at-the-mouth Leftist environmental wack job - or politicians trolling for their votes - quote this as gospel, especially the politicians, because as you'll see, there's a nice little somethin' somethin' in it for them too.

The environmental argument is especially ridiculous, and so non-factual only a low information California Lefty would buy it. Plastic bags originally came into the picture when these same people began screaming about all of the trees being murdered to provide paper bags. And the time it takes them to decompose is a non-argument, because being plastic, they melt and are readily recyclable.

Rather than admit that this was a stupid campaign on their part and that they didn't know what they were talking about in the first place, they've gone the other way. So now paper bags are just fine.

Oh, and about those paper bags? The law also calls for - wait for it - a 10-cent charge per paper bag.

Here's the hidden enticement for the local politicos:

Nearly two billion single-use plastic bags and 400 million paper bags are distributed annually in Los Angeles, according Health the Bay, a non-profit environmental organization.

Ah....let's do some math.

The vast majority of working people will simply knuckle under and pay the dime per bag rather than deal with the inconvenience or risk E.coli or food poisoning from unwashed cloth bags. Let's be conservative and say that two billion paper bags get used, even though it will probably be more.

At 10 cents per bag, we're talking at least a windfall for the politicians of $200,000,000 per year in Los Angeles County, and probably more. They've found a way to legally put a sales tax on food items. And of course, the charge per bag can always be raised whenever the Council feels the need.

Call it yet another tax on the working class, who shop once per week and can't afford to have their groceries delivered, or don't have Hispanic housekeepers to do the chore for them.

The ban will take effect Jan. 1, 2014, for large stores that make more than $2 million a year and on July 2014 for smaller stores that carry limited groceries.

I do have one question for the sort of people who cheered this law on.

Whatever are you going to use now to put your doggie poop in after you scoop it up?

Obama Begins 'Negotiating' US Surrender To The Taliban

The US has confirmed statements by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid that peace talks will begin between the US negotiators and a Taliban delegation in Doha, Qatar on terms for ending the war in Afghanistan and a U.S. withdrawal.

The talks have been authorized by the Taliban's leader Mohammad Omar.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government is being excluded from the talks, but he's insisting that his High Peace Council will follow up with its own talks a few days later, provided his preconditions are met. The preconditions?

“The conditions are: The talks, having begun in Qatar, must immediately move to Afghanistan,” Karzai said. “Second, the talks must bring about an end of the violence in Afghanistan, and third, the talks should not become a tool for any third-party country” to pursue its own interests in Afghanistan.

Since the Taliban are pretty open about calling Karzai 'a U.S. stooge' and refusing to deal with him, we'll see how that ends up.

The only U.S. conditions are almost exactly what I predicted when I first wrote about the U.S. working with Qatar to open a Taliban office six months ago:

Essentially, the scenario will likely go something like this. In exchange for releasing captured terrorists from Gitmo into Taliban custody, recognizing the Taliban as legitimate political rulers in Afghanistan plus a suitable baksheesh in the form of some more aid money, we will be allowed to retreat more or less gracefully and Mullah Omar and the Taliban will mouth some platitudes about disengaging from al-Qaeda.

Or to quote the New Speak spouted by the Obama Administration, two statements 'opposing international terrorism launched from Afghan soil and supporting the peace process:'

In addition to agreeing to meet with Afghans, the statement issued by Mujahid said “the Islamic Emirate does not want to inflict harm to other countries from its soil” and wants “good relations” with all countries. It said Taliban objectives for the office included “to support a political and peaceful solution.”

A U.S. official said the statement fulfilled the requirements. The Taliban also repeated its demand for an end to the foreign “occupation” of Afghanistan and its goal of establishing “an independent Islamic system” there.

Keep in mind that people like the Taliban don't regard the activities of people like Hamas, al-Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba or Hezbollah to be terrorism in the slightest. And at any rate, any agreements made with an infidel are meaningless anyway as far as the Taliban is concerned.

And that wonderful Islamic system? Pure 7th century, especially when dealing with uppity women:

Yes, the Taliban want to be back in power, want all foreign troops out of the country and want all of their detainees released. They will undoubtedly get everything they want and more.

Those detainees include about 60 prisoners the United States still holds in Afghanistan and five being held at Guantanamo Bay. Most of the rest of the Taliban killers with American blood on their hands were already turned over to the Afghan government by the Obama Administration, so the remainder include some real hard cases.

We might even see a couple of celebrity detainees like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed go free as well, perhaps being turned over to Qatari custody for awhile before being quietly released. The Qataris, who have acted as the Taliban's lawyer throughout the negotiations are a likely choice for role of halfway house in these situations.

Karzai and other members of the Afghan elite who've grown wealthy during our occupation will leave once the Taliban takes over. President Obama never liked him anyway - he was 'Bush's man' - and once President Obama failed in a clumsy attempt to muscle him out of power when he first took over, he ceased working with us or trusting us.

Those Afghan security forces we spent billions to equip and train? Some of the officers, especially the more high ranking ones who were in a position to steal and put a little bit away will likewise leave. The rest will serve Afghanistan's new masters. Like the other Muslim armies we built in Iraq and 'Palestine', the Afghan forces would happily turn those shiny new M-16s we gave them on us if the occasion arose.

This is how Obama's War ends, the Good War, the one he accused President Bush of 'dropping the ball on', the one Obama in his arrogance insisted he was going to win after his overblown campaign rhetoric.

Instead, after a dysfunctional adventure that saw us doubling down on the original folly with no clear goals and with Rules of Engagements that handcuffed our warriors and put them in harm's way to no purpose, we're bugging out. Again, from the original piece I wrote last January:

In Afghanistan, as in Iraq, we have emboldened our enemies, spent blood and treasure and accomplished nothing of real permanence, although it pains me to say it because I have a very real knowledge of the sacrifices involved.

Instead of handling AfPak the way it should have been handled from the very beginning, we blundered in without any clear strategic goals or direction. Once our enemies and for that matter, those whom were willing to be our friends realized our leaders had no idea what they were doing and weren't serious about real victory, the rest was merely a matter of time.

This is a national disgrace unworthy of the sacrifices of the brave men and women we sent there.

SecDef Hagel And JCS Gen. Dempsey Implementing Plans To Put Women In The Front Lines

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey are in the process of implementing plans that will put women service members on the front lines in combat.

Under details of the plans obtained by The Associated Press, women could start training as Army Rangers by mid-2015 and as Navy SEALs a year later.

The military services have mapped out a schedule that also will include reviewing and possibly changing the physical and mental standards that men and women will have to meet in order to quality for certain infantry, armor, commando and other front-line positions across the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reviewed the plans and has ordered the services to move ahead.

The move follows revelations of a startling number of sexual assaults in the armed forces. Earlier this year, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey said the sexual assaults might be linked to the longstanding ban on women serving in combat because the disparity between the roles of men and women creates separate classes of personnel - male "warriors" versus the rest of the force.{...}

The military services are also working to determine the cost of opening certain jobs to women, particularly aboard a variety of Navy ships, including certain submarines, frigates, mine warfare and other smaller warships. Dozens of ships do not have adequate berthing or facilities for women to meet privacy needs, and would require design and construction changes.

The Obama Administration is already tossing thousands of battle hardened and experienced warriors out of the service to 'cut costs'. Apparently a number of them are going to be replaced with women without experience on the front lines of combat in the name of political correctness.

As for Dempsey's comments on sexual assaults in the military, how ridiculous they are can be determined by the stats on homosexual rape in the military, which is a significant part of the increase.

 military_s220x390

More military men than women are sexually abused in the ranks each year, a Pentagon survey shows, highlighting the underreporting of male-on-male assaults.

When the Defense Department released the results of its anonymous sexual abuse survey this month and concluded that 26,000 service members were victims in fiscal 2012, which ended Sept. 30, an automatic assumption was that most were women. But roughly 14,000 of the victims were male and 12,000 female, according to a scientific survey sample produced by the Pentagon.

“It appears that the DOD has serious problems with male-on-male sexual assaults that men are not reporting and the Pentagon doesn’t want to talk about,” Elaine Donnelly, who heads the Center for Military Readiness, said. She noted that only 2 percent of assailants are women.

Now that gays can openly serve in the military, I wouldn't be surprised to see those stats increase, no matter how the Pentagon tries to hide it.

They will undoubtedly increase for women as well as the New Politically Correct Military rushes to put women on the front lines of combat. Aside from the additional risks women will face if they're taken prisoner, (particularly by adherents of Islam...'what thy right hand possesses'), the very nature of combat conditions themselves and the close quarters they involve will lead to increased sexual assaults, pregnancies on the front lines and decreased unit cohesion as various troops couple, decouple and rearrange.

Not only that, but it will lead to increased casualties because of the lowering of standards and because most men are genetically programmed to take risks to rescue women in peril...especially if there's a sexual or romantic connection between them.

Welcome to the Left's deconstruction of the US military.

Our New Syrian Jihadi 'Allies' Massacre And Behead Christians, Desecrate Churches And Shrines

Our president claims to be a Christian, but apparently can't wait to begin arming, training and funding jihadis as they ethnically cleanse Christians from Syria.

Over 300,000 Christians have already been driven out of Syria, many seeking shelter in the diminishing Carmelite community in Lebanon. The Islamist rebels have especially targeted them, and murders, rapes and kidnappings for ransom abound. most of the Christians in Syria whom remain support Assad, being under no illusions about what their lives under and Islamist Muslim Brotherhood dominated regime would be like.

A few weeks ago, according to the Assyrian International News Agency (AINA), forces of the Free Syrian Army massacred the population of the Christian-populated al-Duvair village on May 27:

“The armed rebels affiliated to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) raided in Reef (outskirts of) Homs near the border with Lebanon today and massacred all its civilian residents, including women and children. The armed rebels' attack and crimes in al-Duvair village came after they sustained heavy defeats in al-Qusseir city which has almost been set free by the Syrian army except for a few districts."

At around the same time, the Syrian rebels reportedly desecrated and destroyed the ancient St. Elijah Orthodox Christian monastery near Al-Qusayr by the Lebanese border.

They ransacked the cloister, destroyed the sanctuary, blew up the belfry and tore down the statue of St. Prophet Elijah after murdering several of the monks and driving the rest off.

And in another reported incident in the predominantly Christian town of Ras Al-Ayn on the Turkish border last December, members of the Syrian Free Army looted the town, kidnapped one man who protested, beheaded him and fed his body to the dogs:

Syrian rebels beheaded a Christian man and fed his body to dogs, according to a nun who says the West is ignoring atrocities committed by Islamic extremists.

The nun said taxi driver Andrei Arbashe, 38, was kidnapped after his brother was heard complaining that fighters against the ruling regime behaved like bandits.

She said his headless corpse was found by the side of the road, surrounded by hungry dogs. He had recently married and was soon to be a father.

Sister Agnes-Mariam de la Croix said: ‘His only crime was his brother criticised the rebels, accused them of acting like bandits, which is what they are.’

There have been a growing number of accounts of atrocities carried out by rogue elements of the Syrian Free Army, which opposes dictator Bashar al-Assad and is recognised by Britain and the West as the legitimate leadership.

Militants wearing black bandanas of Al Qaeda recently laid siege to the Monastery of St James the Mutilated, located between Damascus and Homs, for two days in an attempt to prevent Christmas celebrations, the nun claims.

This blindness isn't limited to President Obama.Exactly the same thing happened to Iraq's Christians under on President Obama's watch and that of another president who made a point of emphasizing his Christian faith, George W. Bush.

The Maronite community in Lebanon is diminishing under Hezbollah's rule,Egypt's Coptic community is under siege as shariah takes over and Christianity is being wiped out in the place it was born.

In fact, there's only one country in the Middle East where Christians do not face vicious persecution and ethnic cleansing and where the Chriastian population is actually growing - Israel.

Forum: Do You Think The Obama Administration's decision to Get Actively Involved in The Syrian Civil War Is A Good Idea?

Every week on Monday morning , the Council and our invited guests weigh in at the Watcher's Forum, short takes on a major issue of the day. This week's question: Do You Think The Obama Administration's decision to Get Actively Involved in The Syrian Civil War Is A Good Idea?

Simply Jews: The WH need to respond to the Syria Civil war makes me commiserate with the lose-lose situation WH is in regarding this conundrum.

To provide arms to the people that will almost certainly turn the weapons against the people who provided them in the first place is not an appetizing choice. It has already happened during the so called "Arab Spring", the best example being Libya,as it happened in Afghanistan and in other places.

To do nothing and to watch the numbers of dead and wounded mounting, as do the numbers of fugitives all around Syria, is also not a pleasant alternative.

Many good people call for the military assistance to be provided immediately, and of course there is no good explanation why not to do it. Many other good people warn about the dire consequences of providing the military assistance to raving Al Qaeda and other fundies, and there is no good answer for these too.

So there.

GrEaT sAtAn"S gIrLfRiEnD: Syriavention? Too little too late. All indications indicate an upcoming blitz on Aleppo is like in the last bit of planning and a Gotterdammerung battle will last perhaps two or maybe even 3 weeks.

Unless 44 plans on using American troops on station in Jordan to split Syrian forces (either by crossing the border or just by making tons of noise to distract forces needed for Aleppo), by the time Great Satan is all crunk up for intervention it will only be like an honor guard for the rebels trek to annihilation.

For now - right now - looks like 44"s posse wants both sides to lose - including civilians - and will most likely not go much further than maintaining a bloody stand off stalemate.

What is also evident is that ebberdobby else involved in the conflict—and the cats that are sponsoring them—is still waiting on 44. On Assad's side, Russia, Iran, HizBAllah, and Iraq have helped to somersault the tide of conflict against Syrian Free Army and Rebellious rebels, and they've sweetly enjoyed prett much free rein in light of 44"s tardiness and limited response (only civilian and medical stuff so far). NATO like France and Great Britain - are holding back for 44 to lead.

The real quiz is: Can 44 continue a neither-in-nor-out approach to ye olde Suriya al Kubra since it's like a real live humanitarian and regional disaster that could threaten the unstable stability of the entire Middle East?

See, the influx of foreign weaponry- Iranian drones, HizBAllah brigades, and more better and more effective Russian style tactics have allowed the Syrian military to isolate the rebels into urban pockets before handing them their assets and defeating them in detail. Supplying hot up to date anti-panzer and anti-aircraft weaponry might give the rebels a chance to counter attack heavy duty forces constricting their areas. Yet the fear that MANPADS and Kornet rockets might end up in Western nations are carnage creators for terrorists is a real threat

It looks like Bashar's cats and allies have compromised the rebels' communications networks, so secure communication abilities might help conduct surprise ops without giving away their plots and advertising it to their enemies.

This stuff alone is prob not near enough to turn the tide though. Syria (on paper anywrought) has an armed to the teeth military of ginormous size and appears to have learned some dang hard lessons in the last 6 months.

The best option would most likely be for Great Satan to give up unconventional warfare advice and training from Special Ops.

JoshuaPundit: America has never had a dog in the Syrian civil war. But an intervention in Syria has several benefits for President Obama, if not for America.

First, from a political standpoint it provides an important  distraction from the myriad scandals now confronting the administration. The Obama Administration has known about what was going on in Syria for a long time, but only now has it suddenly become imperative that we intervene there.

From standpoint of this president's agenda, an American intervention accomplishes several things.

The aim of President Obama and his cronies from day one has been the idea that  ending  America's problems with the Muslim world involves  promoting Islamism at home and abroad and creating 'daylight' between America and Israel by destroying the alliance between the two countries.

We have already seen President Obama do his part to create and fund Islamist regimes in Libya and Egypt as well as funding  the Hamas regime in Gaza. He wants to do the same in Syria, even if it means arming and financing al-Qaeda jihadis.

The chief financial backers of both the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamists worldwide and the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda dominated rebels in Syria have been Saudi Arabia and  Qatar, while logistical support for the Syrian rebels has come from the Islamist regime of Turkey. What's evolved in Syria is a Sunni vs. Shi'ite  proxy war somewhat similar to the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980's. The Syrian Sunni rebels have been augmented by Sunni jihadis from various places while the Assad regime has drawn on Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as well as Russian support. The rebels are losing because they're running short on manpower, and the Saudis and Qataris want someone else to do the fighting.

That’s why they've dragged the United States into this.

If the rebels win, not only has President Obama gained some points with the Saudis, Turks and Qataris by putting together yet another hardline Islamist regime, but this one, like Egypt, will be on Israel's borders. Jordan, where the Brotherhood is also quite strong will also be destabilized and may very well be the next piece of the Caliphate that is forming.

President Obama and his Secretary of State are already making demands of Israel that even Israel's most  die hard  Leftists can't support.  When push comes to shove and if  the inevitable war starts, don't be surprised if President Obama cuts Israel off from armaments and supplies.

The Noisy Room: Emphatically, no. Not for us, any way -- it's a good idea for the Obama Administration as it creates more confusion for Americans and supports Islam. It depletes our military resources; it guts our Treasury (by 50 million a day), it creates illusions of security, while creating anxieties about security... in summary, if you are in the chaos business, this is a good thing.

We have just aligned ourselves with Turkey, al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. We are now at war, not only with Syria, but also -- by proxy -- Russia and Iran. There are bad guys on both sides, but by siding with the Muslim Brotherhood, we are actively pushing forth a worldwide Caliphate and Obama knows this. The CIA just announced that they are going to arm the rebels, which gives cover to the whole Benghazi atrocity and gives plausibility to Ambassador Stevens and the CIA running guns for the rebels. So, helping the rebels will provide cover for Obama and Clinton to a certain extent to justify their monstrous misdeeds. Glenn Beck predicted this and was right on the money. President Obama also signed a secret order giving support to Syrian rebels and John "we-have-nothing-to-fear-from-an-Obama-presidency" McCain visited them and gave them credibility as well. See a picture forming here? I do.

I firmly believe we have entered WW III and don't even know it yet. Thanks to Obama, not only has this Administration destroyed America financially with the Cloward and Piven strategy and Alinsky tactics, he has discredited our military and defense agencies and now is ushering in the mother of all wars. Hell, he's not reshaping America, he's melting her down and helping to beat her into servile plowshares on the radical Islamic forge.

You are seeing radical Islam align with Marxists to accomplish 'change' globally into a hellish worldwide dictatorship. Under cover of this war, the Jihadists will attempt the destruction of Israel to further solidify the Caliphate. And I predict, either directly or indirectly, the US will help them. We have chosen the wrong side and are heading down a very dark path. Syria is the gate to global hell.

Liberty's Spirit: There are almost 100,000 dead and millions of refugees, but the redline for Obama was 150 killed with chemical weapons? What even happened to the “responsibility to protect” that was touted so much when he illegally intervened in Libya? Apparently that theory only works if your country has oil reserves that the Europeans want to protect and if Russia is not their “sugar daddy,” nor Iran their ally. Quite frankly this move at this time is insulting to the world’s intelligence. He is two years too late.

Interesting how when Obama could have intervened and perhaps influenced in some manner any democratically aligned members of the opposition he refused. Instead, those that helped the opposition were Sunni Islamists, mostly Wahhabis. So we are now going to help Islamists in Syria who think that after they destroy Assad their next goal is to destroy Israel and then United States. The opposition has also been shown to commit many war crimes. They have butchered non-Sunnis and have slaughtered Christians. Their goal is to drive out any non-Moslem from Syria. These are not Jeffersonian democrats, but another group of mass murderers.

In truth, Obama allowed Syria to become the new juxtaposition of the old “cold war,” with Putin asserting his influence in the Middle East through Assad and the west trying to catch up by influencing the Islamists on the opposition. (As if the Islamist have respect for the United States. Use the US yes they will, and then they will turn us in no time, just like in Libya.) If the west had not waited Russia would not be as strong as it is today in the region and neither would Iran. But the problem is that the Obama administration has no idea what it is doing vis-à-vis foreign policy and especially in the Middle East. It has spent the last four years blaming every Middle East issue on Israel and specifically the settlements in Judea and Samaria. These foreign policy clowns allowed the Arab world to fall into chaos, they supported Islamist take overs in major American allies, have threatened the few pro-American Arab regimes that still exist, and created a much more dangerous world for everyone.

The best part will be when this "Arab Winter" is all "over" the Obama administration is going to demand a "Peace Conference" where Israel is to give up Judea, Samaria, part of Jerusalem to the Islamist supporting and aligned PA ( to appease the Saudis and all Obama's Islamists friends)and then give back the Golan Heights to the murderers that will be governing Syria, whoever that will be. It's already started with the US Secretary of State saying how the world blames Israel for all the Islamo-terrorism. This is the next phase in Obama's foreign policy plan: sacrifice the Jews of Israel to appease the Islamists, as the world once sacrificed the Sudetenland to appease Hitler. Israel will sanely refuse. The war that will come between Israel and the Islamists, will finally at least decide the region's stability for a decade. And Israel will survive as she always has, because she relied only on herself and did not ask the world's permission to survive. Meanwhile, Obama , because the inadequate can never take any blame themselves, will blame any and all devastation in the Middle East and its repercussions throughout the world, on the Jews and undercut Israel as much as he can. In their true nature as well, the leftist-Jewish-American-Obama-sycophants in the US will join in the Obama-blame-Israel-chorus. It's coming you mark my words.

The Razor:  As a superpower we’re involved whether we want to be or not. Obama failed to realize this two years ago, but now evidently recognizes that saying “Assad’s days are numbered,” is meaningless unless you actually do something to make that statement true. Back then the Syrian opposition was much more secular and broad; today it’s devolved into a Sunni vs Shiite brawl with al Qaeda leading the most effective elements of the opposition. If al Qaeda suddenly renounced terror and promised to rescue kittens and give presents to dying children I’d still want to see them at the business end of a hellfire missile. The only thing we should help al Qaeda do is kill themselves.

When the enemy of your enemy is still your enemy, there isn’t much you can do except support both sides. So far we have supported the Iranians and Hezbollah by doing nothing, so in a sense that’s not a bad thing considering lots of jihadis have been sent to Paradise without us firing a shot – proof that inaction is an action of sorts. Now that they are losing, it is time to alter the balance in favor of the jihadis so that body bags get sent back to Teheran and south Lebanon. The easiest and safest way to do this is through a no-fly zone that would prevent Assad from using air attacks against the jihadis and resupplying his regime’s, Iran’s and Hezbollah’s troops.

With the addition of Susan Rice to the National Security Advisor, and Samantha Powers to UN ambassador, two liberal interventionists to posts of power, I’m not surprised to see Obama end his Hamlet imitation. They are probably fretting about the dead Syrian civilians, and although the humanitarian impulse in me exists, there is no reason I would risk my stepson’s life, or anyone else’s son or daughter, to fulfill this impulse. But the Machiavellian in me appreciates a good opportunity to bash America’s enemies on both sides of the dispute, and a no-fly zone allows this to happen without very much risk to American life or property.

I doubt you anyone else would support intervening in Syria for this reason, and it’s a shame. It’s exactly what our politicians should be doing: thinking about what is best for America first, and letting the world sort itself out on its own.

Rhymes With Right: The problem here is that Obama's commitment to the war is so vague that it can mean anything.  Today it is weapons -- how long until it is troops?  And how will he ensure that the weapons given to fight in Syria will end up in the hands of non-terrorist, non-Islamist forces?  II don't see how he can.

Of course, maybe he can put each rebel through the same background check he wants for American citizens before they get guns -- and then limit the number of rounds of ammo each gets to the same number he and other gun grabbers want to impose on American

Bookworm Room: No.  It might have been a good thing two years ago, when a little American oomph could have knocked Assad out of power and allowed room for reform.  Two years and eighty-thousands dead bodies later, it's too late.  Syria is now mired in a proxy war between Iran and al Qaeda, with us now siding with al Qaeda -- and we know how well that alliance will turn out based upon our experiences in Libya.

I predicted this in 2008.  Not precisely this, of course, but I predicted that, with an obviously weak horse in the White House, all Hell would break loose somewhere or everywhere.

  Well, there you have it.
