Egypt Moves Towards The Abyss

The recent bloody clashes and unrest in Egypt is merely a foretaste of what could easily occur next month, when elections are supposed to be held.

The latest violence, between Egypt's Christian Copts and the army, involved a protest over a whole series of church burnings and killings at the hands of Muslims and ended with the army driving armored vehicles at top speed into the crowd and crushing people to death. It left 26 dead and over 200 wounded.

The Copts, who comprise about 10% of Egypt's 80 million population mostly supported the ouster of Mubarak. They're one of the earliest groups who are likely destined to be very disappointed at the way the 'Arab Spring' turns out in Egypt.

One of my notorious Little Birdies on the ground who ought to know tells me that if elections were held today, there's absolutely no doubt that the Muslim Brotherhood would win a majority in both the Majilis Al-Sha’ab ( "People's Assembly") and the Majilis Al-Shura, the lower and upper houses in what passes for Egypt's parliament. They have proven far better organized than the group we'll refer to as the Twitter Liberals and are in position to dominate the next Egyptian government provided elections are held as scheduled.

Mubarak's National Democratic Party(NDP) controlled the last national assembly. While it no longer exists, its members are active among a few newly formed secular parties whose agenda is to band together to block the Muslim Brotherhood from establishing a religious state.

In response the Muslim Brotherhood upped the ante by giving the military leaders now ruling Egypt an ultimatum - that they expect former NDP members of Parliament to be banned from participating in the upcoming elections.

As in most Muslim countries, Egypt's Army is one of the few parts of society that actually functions. It's an entity unto itself that owns about one third of Egypt's economy, and supports a number of wealthy businessmen with Army connections. At present, the Egyptian Army rules Egypt through the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

The big question for the Army is whether to continue to assume its normal role in Egypt as guardian of the status quo or to stand aside and allow the ascension of an Islamist government, which would entail the loss of a number of its current privileges.

That's the choice the Egyptian Army is going to have to make fairly soon, and by all accounts there's a deep division within the military on which way to go.

Even worse, whatever choice they actually make is going to lead to more outbreaks of violence and instability, the last thing Egypt needs right now.

The country's economy is on the verge of free fall. Tourism is at historic lows thanks to the scenes of violence on television and the publicity of the Lara Logan gang rape, foreign investment is almost non-existent, food and commodity prices have risen dramatically and the country's stock market has lost half its value.

According to my sources, a number of wealthy Egyptians have already sent a lot of their wealth overseas, mostly to Europe and the Emirates, and many of those who can have made arrangements to leave the country if the situation continues to deteriorate.

That will likely include a steady emigration of Egypt's Copts, a number of whom tend to own businesses and be better educated than many of their Muslim neighbors.

It's especially interesting to watch the Obama Administration's reaction to this.

While America is very unpopular among the majority of average Egyptians, at present, Egypt is still a linchpin of U.S. strategy in the region, although nothing like what it was under Mubarak. The country guards the Suez Canal, allowing the quick transit of shipments of oil from the Persian Gulf to Europe and American Naval forces between the Mediterranean, the Horn of Africa with the large U.S. base at Djibouti and the Gulf. Egypt also allows the overflight of American military aircraft.

In exchange for that, Egypt gets $2 billion a year in U.S. military aid and was recently the recipient of an additional $1 billion in debt forgiveness.

While the current military government has made few changes in the status quo as yet, there's no telling what could happen in the near future. Every sign points towards either a Muslim Brotherhood Islamist government or a repressive military dictatorship that would need to appeal to both Islamism and the Brotherhood and the Egyptian popular disdain of America. Either scenario would entail a large change in Egypt's future relationship with the U.S.

Another wild card involves al-Qaeda head Ayman Zawahiri, an Egyptian and ex-Muslim Brotherhood leader. As my regular readers know, according to my sources the reason Osama bin-Laden was fingered for assassination was because of a dispute between bin-Laden, who wanted to keep the organization rooted in AfPak and Zawahiri who saw new opportunities in the Arab world with the coming of the Arab Spring and the ascendancy of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

In view of that, many of the Obama Administration's actions towards Egypt's military government are puzzling, to say the least.

The administration has ordered the transfer of a number of advanced U.S. military systems to Egypt, including the M1A1 Abrams tank, 24 F-16C/D Block 50/52 aircraft (at a cost of $3.2 billion Egypt doesn't really have to spend), E-2 AWACS, and Raytheon's ACES Electronic Countermeasures system among others. Since Egypt's military is already far more advanced and more than a match for that Libya or the Sudan, one has to wonder why the transfer of all this hardware is taking place, since the only other country Egypt has a border with is Israel. Perhaps that's not coincidental.

Not only do these transfers destabilize peace in the region, but Egypt has already been caught numerous times violating its end user agreements by illegally sharing U.S. technology with people like the Chinese. And then there's the concern over Egypt's ongoing clandestine illegal nuclear program, something the Obama Administration is fully aware of.

In view of Egypt's precarious political situation,it's disquieting that the Obama Administration is taking the unnecessary risk of having sophisticated U.S. weaponry in the hands of a hostile regime. While President Obama is even more of a fetishist for the ever-elusive 'Arab Democracy' than his predecessor, even a casual observer of what's going on in Egypt ought to understand the inherent danger.

While Egypt's Hosni Mubarak might have been deposed anyway, the fact is that President Obama's engagement with the Muslim Brotherhood and his backing of Mubarak's ouster gave things a significant shove in that direction. In later years, we could very well be talking about President Obama's blunders with Egypt the same way we currently discus President Carter's failures in dealing with Iran.

Herman Cain Aces 'Meet The Press' - And David Gregory Beclowns Himself

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and

Whatever one thinks about Herman Cain, you have to give him credit for the skillful way he handled an obviously partisan and barely polite David Gregory on MSNBC. Gregory's agitation is most noticeably present when they discuss Cain's 9-9-9 plan, and he's barely able to keep his 'journalist' mask on.

Just a note to Mr. Gregory...if you have a 9% Federal income tax rate, you're definitely going to have more money to spend or invest, which creates economic activity that can likewise be taxed.Ditto if the numerous excise taxes and 'fees' are axed from the cost of goods. And of course, that has no bearing on what the local politicians you elect choose to charge you for the privilege of living in their jurisdiction!

My answer to David Gregory's bleat about how the poor who now pay no taxes would pay more might have been 'but there are people on your network every day screaming about how we all need to pay our fair share! Do you disagree with that concept?' Cain's response is much more diplomatic.

Cain's 9-9-9 plan has a number of problems, mostly in two areas. First national sales taxes, also known as VAT elsewhere always go up, something Gregory hinted at in one source he quoted. Politicians just can't resist it. And second, the current tax code actually creates economic activity in a number of areas, real estate purchases and investment and new car sales and leases being two of them. But the basic idea is at least worth exploring with the object of some heavy tweaking.

I loved the part where Gregory referred to Cain as 'African-American, a term I know you don't like.' Why deliberately use it then if you know someone finds it distasteful? At any rate, Cain's response is excellent, and the entire interview is worth watching.

Poor Murderers!

Al Arabiya has a heart rending human interest story out today about the ordeal suffered by Nihad Zakout, who's been without her father since 1989, when he was tossed in prison by those heartless Israelis. Now, thanks to the human ransom being paid for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, she's finally looking to seeing her dear father, Mohamed Zakout after all these years. Oh yes, the Israelis allowed her visits but that's hardly the same thing.

The article relates how even President Clinton was moved to feel her pain and promised to do his best to free Nihad's father. Alas, Mr. Bill being Mr. Bill, he didn't follow through. or perhaps he just forgot. But now, thanks to the heroic Hamas kidnappers and their keeping Gilad Shalit a prisoner in isolation for over five years, Nihad can look forward to seeing her dear father again without him being behind bars.

Oh, wait...there is a bit more.

Mohamed Zakout was a construction worker in Tel Aviv who was earning a living for his family. Unfortunately, on March 21st, 1989 he succumbed to Palestinian Rage Syndrome( AKA Mad Dogitis) and stabbed to death the very first Jew he came across, someone unknown to him who just happened to be passing by. He then stabbed to death another passerby and seriously injured a third before the Israeli police arrested him.

Zakout was tried in Israeli civil court and received two life sentences for murder. Imagine, two life sentences merely for ridding the world of a couple of pestilential Yahud! But now, he's finally scheduled to be free, along with a bunch of other 'Palestinian' heroes and receive a tumultuous welcome.

And even better, since he's only forty eight, he can now be counted on to continue the War Against The Jews.

These are the sort of people the 'Palestinians' make role models and heroes out of. It's a very good indication of what 'Palestine' would be like and why the two-state solution that presupposes Israel and 'Palestine' living in peace next to each other is a pathetic myth.

Big Government's Next Battlefield - Ohio's Referendum On Public Employee Unions

There's a little watched off year election I'd recommend you keep your eye on taking place in the Buckeye State.

It concerns an attempt to repeal Senate Bill 5, the signature legislative achievement of Governor John Kasich that curbs, for the first time, collective bargaining leverage for the public employee unions.

As in many other states, particularly those run for years by Democrats, Ohio has a severe budget crisis brought on by the circle jerk relationship between the Public employee unions and the Democrats in Columbus.

The game's pretty simple, has taken place in a great many states and amounts to an ingenious scam to fund and elect the Democrats at public expense. It starts when the Democrats push through laws giving public employee unions massive collective bargaining rights and closed shops. In turn, the unions provide manpower at election time and campaign cash taken directly from the salaries of all employees regardless of party and paid for by all taxpayers regardless of their political leanings. The Democrats get back into office ( with perhaps a bigger majority) and the unions find themselves 'negotiating' for raises and increased benefits with the exact politicians they just helped elect, and a nice chunk of the raises end up being kicked back again to the Democrats.

In some Blue States like California, the public employee unions enjoy legislatively mandated pensions that must pay retirees at a certain percentage of their final salary no matter how well the state's pension fund does. California's public employee unions responded to this largesse by investing their pension funds in the riskiest derivatives, figuring that if things worked out well their war chests would swell and give them increased leverage for bargaining with politicians for increased benefits and pay through campaign contributions. If things didn't go so well, the benefits still had to be paid by state law.

As a result of this roulette whirl on the taxpayer's dime, California's unfunded pension liabilities are close to a trillion dollars and are a major factor in effectively bankrupting what used to be the richest state in the union.

In Ohio, Governor Kasich and a Republican dominated legislature made the decision to stave off insolvency by passing Senate Bill 5. It limits public employee union's collective bargaining rights on health coverage costs, pensions and wages and gives city councils and school boards the right to impose a 'take it or leave it' final contract offer if management and the union do not reach a settlement. It also requires government workers to pay at least 15 percent of their health insurance costs and pay 10 percent of their salaries toward their pensions... still a far better deal than most private sector employees if they're lucky enough to have a job with benefits.

The public employee unions and Ohio Democrats jumped on this after the measure was passed in March and collected collected 1.3 million signatures to place the repeal vote on the Nov. 8 ballot. The national Democratic Party is now involved, and the anti-Senate Bill 5 forces, under the name We Are Ohio have spent an estimated $5 million already. At present the repeal is ahead in the polls, although the lead has been dropping sharply as anti-repeal forces whose umbrella organization is Building a Better Ohio have begin fighting back to block repeal of the law.

This is a major battle that's going to help decide not only the 2012 presidential election but the bigger question of whether America continues to go broke as it succumbs to the smothering morass of Big Government or returns to its traditional values.

If repeal fails, other states are likely going to follow the lead of Ohio and Wisconsin to curb the public employee unions and it will be a good indication that President Obama can pretty much kiss Ohio's 18 electoral votes bye bye.

If repeal wins, it will be the best political news the president has had in a long time.

Some clarity...this isn't at all about management vs. labor or union rights, but about ending a dysfunctional and increasingly dangerous scheme to fund the Democratic Party at public expense that simply isn't sustainable any more.

It's that simple.

Obama DOJ Forces School District To Pay Muslim Teacher $75K Over Special Leave For Mecca Trip During School Year

You may remember a story I reported on last December about the Obama Justice Department filing suit against the Berkeley School District in Illinois on behalf of Safoora Kahn, a Muslim teacher because the district denied her three weeks special leave during the school term in order to attend the Haj in Mecca.

The Haj, for those of you who don't know is a religious pilgrimage to the Saudi city of Mecca. It's a religious duty all Muslims are supposed to perform once in their lifetime if they are able, where they prostrate themselves before the Ka'aba and a meteorite known as the Sacred Black Stone and perform rites virtually unchanged since it was a pagan idol dedicated to Lah, the Arabian Moon God.

And it lasts all of five days, not the three weeks Khan requested.

Nevertheless, after her request was denied twice, Khan resigned, went to Mecca and filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) which referred it to the Department of Justice. They sued on her behalf, and believe it or not, they won.

Safoorah Khan’s religious discrimination lawsuit against the Berkeley School District ended with a settlement that forced the district to pay $75,000 in lost back pay, compensatory damages and attorneys’ fees, not to mention the costs the district incurred in defending itself.

The settlement also requires the district to develop a policy for accommodating religions - and let's be honest, we're only talking about Islam here - including mandatory training on religious accommodations to all board of education members and school supervisors.

“I’m glad that we settled and I hope this does set a precedent,” Khan said. “I hope they realize that hajj means a lot to Muslims and there will be more and more people taking the trip. I hope this helps people and their employers to accommodate Muslims and their requests.”

That statement is a clue as to how this went down. I can almost guarantee that Ms. Kahn talked to her friends at CAIR first before quitting her job and filing the EEOC complaint, which cost her nothing and cost the school district she worked for $75,000, the cost of defending itself against her lawsuit and the cost of hiring a replacement when she resigned in the middle of a school year.

I guarantee you, the Obama DOJ would not have taken a similar case for a Catholic teacher seeking three weeks off for Holy Week, or a Jewish teacher seeking three weeks off for the ten day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The first commandment of the Obama Administration - Thou shalt appease Islam at all times.

Isreal Will Build New Neighborhood In Jerusalem

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUmwzIXs2eqEhdK2Nn6DCaiw-mtYg7KQOX1OL-0YtdaxhhFfL0WY1pMl2vmbmX-BLkdMGvxnG7GOBW48vGVFfuMe4K6UsItXUOOsa581svI2krPyxV2-AkMW4vESEhlZvyCgSU/s1600/Givat+HaMatos+map.jpg

Just this past week, a new neighborhood in the southeastern part of Jerusalem was approved in the area now known as Givat HaMatos with 2,610 apartments. Apparently some of the units will be reserved for an extension of the Arab neighborhood Beit Safafa, although why is beyond me. It would make a great deal more sense to simply take over part of the southern extension of Beit Safafa and connect up with Gilo.

Still, it's welcome news for those suffering from Israel's housing crunch. As I always say, build the land and the rest will take care of itself. Let a thousand bulldozers bloom!

(Hat tip, Carl)

The Council Has Spoken!! This Week's Watchers Council Results

The Council has spoken, the votes have been cast, and the results are in for this weeks' Watchers Council contest!

Ah, choices....we all make them in life, and this week's winner discusses his choices freely, choices based on what he values as opposed to what he doesn't. And that's freedom, isn't it? Here's a slice from The Razor's fine essay Chosen Paths: Why I Don't Resent People Making More Money Than I Do :

Our system has its flaws. I have personally lost a job in a futile campaign against offshoring and labor dumping through the government’s meddling in the labor market. I worry about things like the cost of education and the future value of college degrees. Just like many liberals I too resent seeing the same people who caused the financial meltdown still in power instead of the chains they deserve. But for all of its flaws, it’s still the best at providing choice to anyone who demands it.

If you want to become a doctor, you can become one. If you want to start your own business and sell tutus to little girls studying dance, you can. If you want to start a restaurant or cook at one, there is no bureaucrat needing a bribe or law preventing you. Our system excels at providing choices to people whereas other systems provide outcomes. You are a farmer, but you will sell your produce to us at a price we determine. You are a doctor, but we will determine how much you are paid for each patient. You want to sell shoes in my district, you will have to pay me a flat fee every month (that’s how my friend Jan Mohamed was shaken down in Tanzania under socialism).

It takes much more than education and hard work to become a millionaire or a billionaire. To reach those heights one needs luck, family connections – a variety of things that are out of reach to all but a very few. But if you are young and your goal is to make a solid middle class salary of $100k a year, or $200k for the top 2% of households, you have to choose a career that pays well and you have to marry or live with someone with the same goal. There’s nothing magical about that formula, and no reason to resent those who have achieved that goal.

As my late mother-in-law said, usually when I had come home complaining after a rough day at the office or the Wife had a particularly tough night on call, “You chose this path.” And we have, all of us, chosen our paths. The Wife and I could have chosen to forgo having children, moved to a major city and gotten higher paying jobs; but we chose to live in a rural area with our rescued animals and our son. She could make much more money as a dermatologist or cardiologist, but she chose the lower paying specialty of family medicine because she wanted to be an old country doctor.

In our Non-Council category the winner was a superb piece by The Investigative Project On Terrorism entitled Abbas could be next Domino To Fall submitted by Right Truth, an examination of why the corrupt, unelected Arab dictator of the 'Palestinian' Authority could easily be the next victim of the Arab Spring.

Here are this week’s full results. New Zeal was unable to vote this week and was affected by the mandatory 2/3 vote penalty:

Shalit Deal - Slightly Better Than First Reported

The deal between Hamas and Israel to free kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for over 1,000 terrorist killers in Israeli prisons was approved by the Israeli cabinet. But the deal is somewhat better for Israel than first reported.

Contrary to earlier reports, a number of the top 'Palestinian' terorrists will not be freed as part of the deal. Among them are:

Marwan Barghouti, who was sentenced to five life sentences for his role in the murders of Israelis during the al-Aksa intifada.

Abdullah Barghouti, who is serving 67 consecutive life terms for building bombs that murdered 66 people.

Ahmed Saadat, the head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and was convicted for his role in the assassination of Israeli minister Rehavam Ze'evi(Z"L).

Hassan Salama, a Hamas leader who was convicted of murdering 67 Israeli citizens, at least half of them children.

Abbas a-Sayed, mastermind of the Park Hotel suicide bombing in Netanya that murdered 30 Israelis at a Passover Seder in 2002.

Ibrahim Hamed, who was found guilty of participating in terrorist attacks that led to the death of 82 Israelis.

Another slight silver lining is that the first batch of 450 jihadis to be released, 300 are either going to be banished to Gaza or overseas. At that the second batch of 577 terrorists to be released will be of Israel's choosing.

One of the prisoners set to be released is particularly sickening. Her name is Amina Mona, and she was sentenced to life imprisonment for luring a lovestruck Israeli teenage boy by the name of Ophir Nahum she met over the internet to a meeting where he was abducted, tortured horribly and murdered by waiting terrorists. She's never yet expressed the slightest remorse for her actions.

Another monster who will walk free is Ahlam Tamimi, sentenced to 16 life terms for her participation in the horrific Sbarro pizza parlor bombing in Jerusalem in August 2001.

And they will both be released to a hero's welcome by the 'Palestinians'.

To give you an idea of what this feels like for the families of the people I like to refer to as the victims of Oslo, I recommend you read this piece by Arnold Roth, who's fifteen-year-old daughter Malki ( HY"D) was murdered in the Sbarro bombing. It will break your heart.

Obama And Iran - Wag The Dog?

The Iranians have formally denied any participation in the attempt to murder the Saudi ambassador to the U.S.

As usual, they're probably lying. We actually have one of the perps in custody.

But what they may not be lying about is the rationale for the ramping up of rhetoric by the Obama administration ( emphasis mine) :

An aide to Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday denied US allegations that the Islamic republic was involved in a plot to kill the Saudi envoy to Washington.

“This is a prefabricated scenario to turn public attention away from domestic problems within the United States,” Ali Akbar Javanfekr, the president’s press adviser, told AFP.

“The US government and the CIA have a lot of experience in diverting public attention from domestic problems in the United States. We have to wait now to know the details of this prefabricated scenario to know the US government’s objectives,” he said.

Let's examine a few things.

Iran is a rogue nation and state supporter of terrorism who has been in a state of war with us since 1978. They or their proxies have killed US troops in Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan, supplied weapons to our enemies. There's even some credible evidence they may have helped facilitate 9/11.

They actually engaged in a shooting war with the U.S. in the Persian Gulf back in the 1980's, and then there's their illegal nuclear program, the constant threats and bluster and their direct arming of our enemies.

President Barack Obama has been an enabler and appeaser of Iran ever since he took office (and to be honest, so was President Bush before him to a large degree). Nothing I mentioned above ever caused him to falter a single bit in 'engaging' with the mullahs or extending what he called 'an unclenched fist' in their direction, no matter how often they spat in his hand.

Now, all of a sudden, President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton are pounding their chests and issuing war cries about an 'unacceptable escalation'? Why now?

What's changed, of course is the president's poll numbers. With an election coming on, President Obama might just see some forceful engagement in Iran as a way to boost those ol' approval numbers. It wouldn't surprise me one bit.

This president frequently channels Jimmy Carter, and you may recall the boost in President Carter's popularity when the Iran Hostage crisis began. Before that, he failure to show even a semblence of acumen in running the U.S. economy or its foreign policy had him doomed to be a one term president.

But once the mullahs moved against our diplomats, the American people rallied around him - at least until they finally figured out that an incredibly weak president was going to be as feckless with the Iranians as he had with the commies and virtually everyone else. Then his ratings plummeted again. Meanwhile the mullahs were smart enough to release the hostages the day President Reagan took office even at terms that were actually far less than what they had been demanding of Carter.

If our current miserable excuse for a commander-in-chief has ideas of taking on Iran to bolster his political future, I applaud the action if not the motivation, provided it's done properly...which it likely won't be with President Obama in charge. A few things to consider:

  • The last thing we need is another war by diktat with foggy objectives. Unlike Libya, the president will need to make the case to Congress. I doubt he's capable of that, but will public opinion sit still for another war like Libya? Especially if the Obama Administration deliberately hampers our military with suicidal Rules of Engagement, encouraged by turgid presidential homilies about Islam, the religion of peace?

  • We have over one hundred thousand troops and billions in equipment stranded in a land locked Afghanistan surrounded by hostile territory. Some provision is almost certainly going to have to be made to get them out.

  • major strikes will need to be made on Iran's missile bases, infrastructure and nuclear facilities. And Iran's navy will have to be sunk, in order to keep the Shatt al-Arab in the Persian Gulf unobstructed. This is no time for half measures. Is President Obama capable of that?

  • Some provision is going to have to be made for our troops in Iraq. It's doubtful the Iraqis will aid their fellow Shi'ites, but they will not want the onus of sheltering U.S. troops, especially if the mullahs have the Iranian trained and armed militias like the Mahdi Army attack.

  • The Russians have billions invested in Iran, and the Chinese need Iranian oil. Depend on them to obstruct any of the UN resolutions or internationally based actions people like President Obama or Hillary Clinton are so fond of. Ditto when it comes to NATO,some of whose members depend on Russian oil and gas and with the European winter coming on.

The president is also likely to face hardline pressure from Putin to back off from Iran - something Obama has been notably deficient in dealing with in the past. In fact, the only real allies we're likely to have will be Australia and Israel, with maybe the Saudis and the Gulf nations in support roles. Given president Obama's hostility towards Israel, is he going to be prepared to make use of our mosy loyal ally in the Middle East?

  • Speaking of oil, the president is going to have to reconsider his de facto ban on drilling, something a number of his enviro-wacko supporters won't like at all. A war in the Persian Gulf would of necessity spike the oil market

  • Above all, is this president prepared to forgo the heady pleasures of nation building after the war's over? Aside from the fact we can't afford it (even less than we could in Iraq)rebuilding Iran would totally ignore the jihadi mentality, which is actually what we're fighting against. For that Islamist mindset, a large amount of rubble and casualties sends a certain invaluable message about the drawbacks of certain actions against America.

  • These are all things I hope President Obama is considering if he's contemplating a wag the dog moment.Frankly, I wonder if he has.

Wikileaks: Obama Tried To Apologize For Hiroshima And Nagasaki - Japan Said No

    This beggars belief.

Back in November 2009 President Obama visited Japan and bowed to the emperor, something no American president had ever done. Apparently the president had something even worse in mind but was saved from dishonoring himself and our country by the Japanese themselves. He planned to visit Nagasaki and Hiroshima to apologize for winning WWII with the atomic bomb.

A heretofore secret cable dated Sept. 3, 2009, was recently released by WikiLeaks. Sent to Secretary of State Clinton, it reported Japan's Vice Foreign Minister Mitoji Yabunaka telling U.S. Ambassador John Roos that "the idea of President Obama visiting Hiroshima to apologize for the atomic bombing during World War II is a 'nonstarter.'"

The Japanese government strongly objected to Obama's planned apology because they feared it would strengthen the opposition on the Left, particularly those opposed to the continuing alliance of the U.S. and Japan.Perhaps they also acted out of a certain compassion, realizing that the actions of a young, inexperienced and frankly stupid president would have caused a firestorm back home in the USA and likewise endangered the America-Japan relationship.

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was horrific, but even most Japanese historians admit that it saved thousands of American and Japanese lives by convincing Emperor Hirohito to surrender instead of the U.S. having to invade the Japanese home islands, something that American military experts at the time estimated might have cost over a million dead and poisoned the relationship between the two nations for generations.

For President Obama to attempt to apologize for America's victory over a fascist foe in WWII and by extension, for the bringing of freedom to Japan staggers the imagination.

It not only shows his abysmal ignorance of history. It's an unforgivable insult to every American who served in WWII and to the country as a whole, and it proves beyond a doubt that we now have a president in the White House whose very morality is skewed and twisted and whose patriotism and love of country can justifiably be questioned.

I can't wait to see how the president's enablers and apologists in the dinosaur media try to spin this.

UPDATE: Yup, they're already at work. BTW, here's a link to the actual cable. The money quote is in part 5, discussing the President's upcoming visit:

    "He[Yabunaka] underscored, however, that both
governments must temper the public's expectations on such
issues, as the idea of President Obama visiting Hiroshima to
apologize for the atomic bombing during World War II is a
    "non-starter."

President Obama obviously advanced the idea of a Hiroshima apology. Otherwise, why would Vice Foreign Minister Yabunaka mention it and advise strongly against it?

FBI and DEA Foil Iran Plot To Murder Saudi Ambassador

The FBI and Drug Enforcement Agency( DEA) were responsible for thwarting what was referred to as an assassin-for-hire plot by Iran to kill Saudi ambassador to the US Adel al-Jubei.

A naturalized U.S. citizen holding Iranian and U.S. passports and a member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard will face conspiracy charges for their part in the plot.

The Iranians, of course are denying it out of hand, although a spokesman for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the Iranian government was awaiting details about the accusations that he described as a "fabrication" by the U.S.

Meanwhile the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington issued a statement Tuesday thanking U.S. authorities for stepping in.

"The attempted plot is a despicable violation of international norms, standards and conventions and is not in accord with the principles of humanity," the embassy's statement said.

The Saudi ambassador was not the only one on the hit list. U.S. officials said the suspects also discussed attacking Israeli and Saudi embassies in Washington and possibly Buenos Aires, Argentina. There's a huge Hezbollah cell there, for those who've forgotten.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, later told CNN he was confident the plan was sanctioned by the Iranian government.

"The quickness of the decisions that were made in order for certain elements of this to fall into place tells us that it is clearly tied to the highest levels of the Iranian government," he said.

Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen, and Gholam Shakuri, an Iran-based member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, are charged with conspiracy to murder a foreign official, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, an FBI agent's affidavit released Tuesday alleged.

Arbabsiar was arrested in September. Shakuri remains at large, the FBI said.

Authorities developed the case against them with the help of an undercover informant posing as an associate of a Mexican drug cartel, officials and court documents said.

The Mexican drug cartel detail ought to raise some hackles. Regular members of Joshua's Army have known about the link between terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas and drug cartels for quite some time. Both groups, just like the Taliban in Afghanistan have drug sales and processing as an important part of their finances and have done deals with various cartels in Latin America, the Mafia and Union Corse' in Europe and the Chinese Triads in Asia. And if terrorism expert Steve Emerson is correct, a number of Hezbollah operatives and sympathizers have already gotten into the U.S. via our porous southern border.

I also found it interesting that Attorney General Eric Holder took a few minutes today to take credit for the FBI and DEA's work. A question comes to mind:Why is it that Eric Holder claims to know absolutely nothing about operations like Fast and Furious that ended in disaster, but is presenting himself as being entirely in the loop and responsible for an operation he had absolutely nothing to do with that ended successfully? Especially ironic since the Iranians may very well have approached one of the Mexican cartels to buy weaponry the cartels got hold of via Holder and Fast and Furious.

And then of course, there's the timing. The announcement of an arrest that took place two weeks ago at a press conference today by an Attorney General who's already been caught lying to Congress and is about to subpoenaed is, well, just a mite suspicious, wouldn't you say?

As for the Iranian plot itself,I remember a time when this would have constituted an act of war, just like seizing a US embassy and taking American diplomats as hostages once would have been. Instead, this is going to be played down, with maybe some rhetoric that signifies absolutely nothing. And Iran knows it.

The Mullahs aren't stupid. They know weakness when they see it, and they see it in Obama the same as they once saw it in Jimmy Carter.

Deal Reportedly Reached For Kidnapped Soldier Gilad Shalit's Release

And it's an absolutely horrible one if the reported details are correct

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel and Hamas have arrived at deal that would free Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been in captivity for five years under unknown conditions without so much as even a Red Cross visit.

In exchange, Hamas is reportedly getting the release of over 1,000 terrorists, many of them serving life sentences (Israel unfortunately has no capital punishment) after being convicted in Israeli courts of murdering and maiming numerous Israeli civilians. I can only imagine how the families of the victims will feel seeing these sneering killers walk free.

Among those reportedly on the list are Ahlam Tamimi, who planned the Sbarro Pizza suicide bombing and transported the terrorist bomber to the site and Marwan Barghouti, serving five life terms for planning terrorist operations against Israeli civilians during the Second Intifada that resulted in the murder of a number of civilians.I shudder to think of whom else Hamas has succeeded in getting released, and how many innocent people may die because of it:

The Izaddin al-Kassam brigades presented the prisoner-exchange agreement with Israel for kidnapped soldier Gilad Schalit as a "historic victory," claiming that Israel has accepted all the demands of the captors.

Abu Obaida, spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas, Izaddin al-Kassam, said that the agreement includes prisoners from east Jerusalem, Israeli Arabs and all females and minors. He also pointed out that two-thirds of the prisoners who would be released in return for Gilad Schalit are serving lengthy terms in prison.

"This is an historic deal," he boasted.

"Hamas will remain faithful to the cause of the prisoners and will continue to work toward securing the release of all of them."
Translation...Hamas has seen that this is a great tactic that works and will try for more of the same.

The deal reportedly calls for the release of 450 terrorist killers within a week, with the rest being freed in two months. One can only imagine what kind of condition Gilad Shalit is in, and I only hope the Israeli government took pains to make sure they're getting a live body back instead of a corpse.

Netanyahu spoke about the difficulty in balancing bringing back a kidnapped soldier and maintaining the security of the citizens of Israel.

"The deal I am bringing to the Government expresses the right balance between all of these considerations. I do not wish to hide the truth from you – it is a very difficult decision. I feel for the families of victims of terror, I appreciate their suffering and distress, I am one of them. But leadership must be examined at moments such as this, being able to make difficult, but right, decisions," Netanyahu said.

"I believe that we have reached the best deal we could have at this time, when storms are sweeping the Middle East. I do not know if in the near future we would have been able to reach a better deal or any deal at all. It is very possible that this window of opportunity, that opened because of the circumstances, would close indefinitely and we would never have been able to bring Gilad home at all."

Netanyahu is recognizing the reality that Egypt's now open and growing hostility would likely preclude a deal of any kind in the future.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said he would oppose the deal and vote against it, but was not insisting that his party do so.

This episode says a great deal about the Israelis and the Palestinians, and their attitude towards the sanctity of life.

On the one hand, we have people who celebrate brutal murderers and make heroes out of them for themselves and their children. They were willing to kidnap someone and keep him in inhumane conditions like no other civilized nation would in order to ransom him and free those murderers to kill again.

On the other hand, we have people who view the sanctity of life so seriously they were willing to swallow hard and free these murderers in order to rescue a kidnapped soldier.Because to the Israelis and the IDF, the idea of leaving a man behind is unbearable, especially knowing what they know about the nature of their enemies.

Israel is to be congratulated on its humanity, if not its common sense.

I sympathize deeply with Noam Shalit and the other members of the Shalit family, but I can't help but think that in the end, Israel will pay in blood for this.I pray G-d I'm wrong.

But as with all things, there is one bright spot that occurs to me.

While Gilad Shalit was being held hostage in Gaza, he remained a huge human shield for the Hamas regime.

Once he's home,if hostilities break out between Israel and Hamas that shield is no longer in place and all bets are off.

    Who Is The Muslim Brotherhood?

A short video course just under eight minutes that will give you the essentials of exactly what the Muslim Brotherhood is about...and why they're dangerous. The Ikhwan was the inspiration for al-Qaeda, not the other way around.

Thanks to the ridiculous policies of the Obama Administration, the Brotherhood and al-Qaeda now have a brand new stronghold in Egypt...and likely in Libya.

In my opinion, that's exactly why Osama bin-Laden was ratted out to be assassinated...the end result of a dispute between bin laden, who wanted to keep al-Qaeda rooted in Pakistan and Afghanistan and Osama's second in command Ayman Zawahiri,an Egyptian and former Brotherhood member who saw the new opportunities available in the Arab world.

Proof The GOP Is Going To Win The White House

    https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR1Ee4h066ybN8CxMZrCx18Ne8xq6EptofAz_N8cHtw24QDqnvZGmVjvkIvPN9X6ELs2JFQFYyI11lqERuuwjl5GZ_INBKYCmmAQxN7BWkjX7eIdABiMoOnTSpcYT6lQdCDx3e/s320/shrum.jpg

    Absolute, concrete, bet-real-money-on-it proof.

Yes, Bob Shrum is now predicting that President Obama wins re-election handily from 'the crazies' as he calls them.

When a partisan, ignorant political hack with the political acumen and judgment gained from having run or had major responsibility for the presidential campaigns of Ted Kenedy, Ed Muskie, George McGovern Dick Gephart, Michael Dukakis, Bob Kerrey, Al Gore, and John Kerry makes a prediction like the one above, it's practically time to break out the champagne.

0 and 8, no wins or draws.

Perhaps both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama's smartest move was making sure that Bob Shrum had nothing to do whatever in any capacity with their campaigns.

Proof That Being An Activist For The 'Occupy' Protests Pays Pretty Well

    http://media.oregonlive.com/business_impact/photo/occupy-wall-street2jpg-6b968beed7e88bc0.jpg

As Scott Johnson from Powerline reveals , there are help wanted ads on Craigslist from the Working Families Party looking to hire protesters for Wall Street and offering $350-650 a week, depending on responsibility and length of time on staff.

I suppose there are bonuses for things like defecating on a police car.

The Working Families Party, as you may know, is a hard left local NY outlet of the Democratic Party that receives funds directly from George Soros ' Open Society via the Tides Foundation.

And it's not just George Soros. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the official campaign arm of the Democrats in the House of Representatives is actively fundraising to finance the 'Occupy' protests. More proof, if any was needed that the 'Occupy' protests are directly linked to the Obama campaign and coordinated out of the White House. The protestors for the most part are simply hired, ginned up shills without a clear idea of what they're actually protesting. They simply follow the orders of their employers.

This is simply a foretaste of the class warfare campaign this president plans to wage in an effort to secure four more years in power.

Issa Says Fast And Furious Subpoenas Could Come As Early As Next Week

    http://weaselzippers.us/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Eric_Holder.jpg

And Attorney General Eric holder is at the top of the list.

Rep. Darrel Issa and Senator Chuck Grassley's investigative committee on the farcical and deadly scheme to allow guns to be purchased and then literally walked across the border for sale to the Mexican drug cartels has to be one of the worst scandals ever to hit American government. It resulted in the death of at least 200 people, including two American border patrol agents, left over 1700 automatic weapons in the hands of some of the worst criminals in the world and it defies common sense.

Unless, as some people have alleged, the whole idea had the agenda in the first place of secretly creating a horrendous situation to game the American people into widespread support for stringent gun control. Of course, if that was the case, than the rationale for the Department of Justice's stonewalling and reluctance to cooperate with the investigation becomes a lot clearer. And the whole thing fits nicely into the typical progressives' notion of knowing what's best for the little people and shoving it down their collective throats by whatever means necessary.

The latest smoking gun was the memo reluctantly released after a subpoena by the committee which showed that Attorney General Holder almost certainly lied to them when he testified that he'd only heard about Fast and Furious a 'couple of weeks ago.' The memo showed that he;d actually been thoroughly briefed by Gary Grindler, Holder’s chief of staff and the former acting deputy attorney general as early as March of 2010. And internal Justice Department documents show that at least ten months before the hearing, Holder began receiving frequent memos discussing Fast and Furious from the head of the National Drug Intelligence Center and Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer.

Holder recently hit back with a letter to the chairman and ranking members of three committees with jurisdiction over the DOJ, claiming that the entire investigation and criticism of him in particular was politically motivated. I suppose the race card gets pulled out next.

“It appears your latest defense has reached a new low,” wrote Issa in his reply.

“Incredibly, in your letter from Friday you now claim that you were unaware of Fast and Furious because your staff failed to inform you of information contained in memos that were specifically addressed to you. At best, this indicates negligence and incompetence in your duties as Attorney General. At worst, it places your credibility in serious doubt.”

While there have been calls for the White House to appoint a special prosecutor, the Obama Administration has so far resisted them. That leads to other questions about exactly how far up the ladder this goes, and what sort of conversations are going on right now between President Obama and his Attorney General.

25 Coptic Christians Killed In Egypt After Protests Over Church Burnings

At least 25 Coptic Christians were killed and hundreds wounded after the Egyptian Army brutally suppressed a protest in Cairo over ongoing church burnings and violence directed toward Egypt's Coptic minority.

The Army drove armored vehicles at high speed directly into to crowd, and most of the dead were crushed under the wheels.

    "Why didn't they do this with the Salafists or the Muslim Brotherhood when they organize protests? This is not my country any more," said Alfred Younan, a Copt speaking near Cairo's Coptic Christian hospital where many of the dead were taken.{...}

Christians complain of discrimination, citing rules that they say make it easier to build a mosque than a church. Tensions have often in the past flared over inter-faith romantic relationships, church building and other issues.

But since Mubarak's overthrow on February 11, incidents have got violent more swiftly. Christians say no one has been tried yet for the burning of a church in Helwan, south of Cairo, in March, after which 13 people were killed, or for violence in the Cairo suburb of Imbaba on May 7 that cost 15 lives.

Protests erupted elsewhere in Egypt including its second biggest city, Alexandria. Copts say promises by the new rulers to address their concerns and protect them have been ignored.

"The new emerging faction of Islamists and Salafists has created havoc since the January revolution ... The problem is the severe reluctance of the cabinet and the authorities to enforce the rule of law and protect the Copts," Youssef Sidhom, editor in chief of a Orthodox Coptic newspaper, al-Watani.

Those 'interfaith romantic relationships' al-Reuters blithely mentions almost always consist of Egyptian Muslims kidnapping Christian girls, torturing them, forcibly converting them to Islam and then marrying them off to one of the perpetrators. These girls are normally not permitted to ever see their families again. Such cases are widespread and are almost never prosecuted or overturned under what passes in Egypt for law.

The Copts are about ten percent of Egypt's 80 million population, and they have always been discriminated against as powerless dhimmis. But while Mubarak was in power, at least some of the worst excesses were controlled. Now, it's open season.

The Muslim Brotherhood and their political allies are using the army's brutality to their advantage, claiming that this just proves that the country needs to go to elections and have the army turn over power to a civilian government as soon as possible.

Once that happens, it will really be open season on the Copts.
