See For Yourself How Progress Works With Seattle's $15/Hour Minimum Wage!!

 AP file photo

Seattle! Socialists on the city council led by Kshama Sawant led the successful charge to push through new legislation that will mandate a $15/hour minimum wage, highest in the country for an American city.

Believe it or not, this bill was a compromise. Sawant and her allies led a failed minority effort to strip the new law of all allowances for training wages, tip credits and health care. She also tried but failed to make the effective date Jan. 1. The council pushed the date back three months to allow businesses to prepare for the higher wages.

Still, she's not at all disappointed.  “Fifteen in Seattle is just a beginning,” Sawant said. “We have an entire world to win with solidarity.”

Fast food franchises were particularly irked because they were considered 'big business' under the new bill, rather than independently owned businesses. They plan to sue.

But meanwhile let's look at the amazing changes this wonderful Progressive victory will bring!

http://images.onset.freedom.com/ocregister/mb2sw5-mb2ss8outofbusinesssign2.jpg

There are an estimated 1,700 franchise locations in Seattle employing about 19,000 workers. Many of these greedy, bloodsucking capitalists will be forced to close, thus freeing their employees from soul killing, repetitive labor so that they can enjoy new careers as poets, artists, mimes  and unpaid interns working for worthy social justice causes.

Other restaurants will adapt, and have the same beneficial effect of freeing up labor:

I wonder if this burger maker works on wind or solar power? And did the company president donate to the right campaigns???

And finally, the ultimate Progressive victory:

Would This Hamburger Be Worth $100 To You?

Bally's Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey has a new item on its menu, their 'Carving Board Burger' that will set you back a cool C note.

What's in it? It starts with 40 ounces (2 1/2 lbs!) of kobe beef, topped with a hefty slab of prime rib, topped with braised short ribs, topped with pickled tomatoes, and finally with a "fonduta" of melted Gorgonzola cheese and balsamic syrup. The whole monstrosity is served on something called an "herbed lardo toasted Italian focaccia."

Lardo is sure the word for it.

The thing could probably feed at least three adult humans, or New Jersey's governor Chris Christie prior to his recent bariatric weight loss surgery.

Would you shell out $100 for this?

Greetings To Jews From The Chinese Restaurant Association Of America

A side note for the uninitiated...most Jews have a real love affair with the various kinds of Chinese food year 'round. And for those of the Tribe who don't keep kosher, Chinese food on Christmas Day is something of a ritual, because a number of Chinese restaurants run by non-Christians are open for biz on December 25th!

Obama Fried Chicken!!

President Obama's destined to be known for more than his abysmal economic policies, extravagant ways and amateur foreign policy. Finger licken' good!!

And it's not just KFC in China..apparently there's now a whole chain of Obama Fried Chicken shops showing the president posed like Colonel Sanders...including the Colonel's famous String tie.Maybe the president can pick up a little cash doing an endorsement deal, or some commercials, eh?

The linked article speculated that this might be a nose tweaking for the President because of his tariff policies on American-bred chicken, which range from 50 to 100 per cent, which means some Chinese importers paid as much as twice the price for American chicken. If so, that would be a fairly typical Chinese way of ridiculing someone.

And it's not just China. Here's a picture of a fried chicken place in my parent's old neighborhood of Brownsville, in Brooklyn NYC:

Oktoberfest Time!

Far be it from me to deprive you of scenes of another one of the world's great parties, now celebrating its 201st birthday - Oktoberfest in Munich:

http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2010/09/20/ok1__1284982412_7685.jpg

Beer, pretty girls, and a party setting. What more could you ask? This goes on for sixteen days, until October 3rd.

http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2010/09/20/ok13__1284984288_2295.jpg

A merry go round in front of St. Paul's Church. Hopefully the riders can hold their beer n' bratwurst, if you know what I mean.

So what's this all about? Well, a wedding actually. Back in October 12, 1810 Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (try to say that ten times quickly) and their loyal subjects decided to throw a party in their honor with the finest grub and grog, ending with horse race on October 17th. This coincided with the sort of traditional harvest festivals common to many cultures ( and was loads of fun besides) so a tradition was born.

The ”Oktoberfestbiers” served are the same beers that have been served at the event in Munich since 1818, and are supplied by 6 breweries known as the Big Six: Spaten, Lowenbrau, Augustiner, Hofbrau, Polaner and Hacker-Pschorr..ooh look, here comes some now:

Why I'm Boycotting Scotch

This is a tough one, but I feel it's something that needs doing. At least when it comes to certain brands.

The West Dunbartonshire Council in Scotland, in a fit of absolute bigotry voted unanimously to boycott products made in Israel. In fact, the resolution is up on their website.

It reads:

‘This Council deplores the loss of life in Palestine which now numbers well over 1,000. This Council also recognises the disproportionate force used by the IDF in Palestine and agrees to boycott all Israeli goods as a consequence. Officers should immediately cease the purchase of any goods we currently source, which were made or grown in Israel. Officers should also ensure we procure no new goods or produce from Israel until this boycott is formally lifted by WDC.’
No mention of course, of the 'disproportionate force' involved in using civilians as human shields, putting missile site in schools, mosques and hospitals, or shooting an anti-tank rocket at a school bus.

Now, West Dunbartonshire is also the site of some famous distilleries that manufacture some of my favorite brands...and in view of what I consider to be a stand with Hamas and a racist boycott of the only Jewish State on a par with the old Nazi slogan 'Kauft nicht bei Juden'('Don't buy from Jews'), I've decided that the fine products of the following distilleries are going to do without my patronage in the future:

Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd. info@morrisonbowmore.co.uk
Distillers of: Auchintoshan, Bowmore, Glen Garioch, McClelland’s

Loch Lomond Distillery Co. Ltd mail@lochlomonddistillery.com
Distillers of Loch Lomond, Scots Earl, Distillery Select, Glen Scotia, Littlemill, Croftengea, Craigslodge, Inchmurrin, Glen Douglas, Inchfad

Chivas Brothers media.relations@pernod-ricard.com
Distillers of Ballantine’s, Chivas, Royal Salute, Clan Campbell, Something Special, Passport, 100 Pipers, Imperial, Long John Aberlour, The Glenlivet, Glendronach, Strathisla, Longmorn, Scapa, Tormore, Jameson, Paddy, Powers, Walker Special Old, Wisers

This is the best list I have of the addresses of distiller's in the West Dunbartonshire Council region. Please let me know if I missed any inth ecomments section and I'll add them to the list.

Below is my letter to Morrison Bowmore Distillers, and similar ones went out to the other two, focusing on some other brands I've enjoyed:

Dear Sirs;
I've long been a fan of your fine single malt, Auchintoshan. But I'm afraid I won't be drinking it in the future, or any other Scotch made in the West Dunbartonshire area.

Recently, the West Dunbartonshire Council voted unanimously to boycott Israeli products. I saw this on their own website, and the unfortunate nonsense they're spouting makes no mention of the aggression visited against Israel by the Palestinians they're so enamored of..the rockets fired against Israel's civilians, the murder of the entire Fogel family including a 3 month old baby, the naming of streets and public squares after people who murder civilians, the making an honorary citizen out of a child murderer. It's quite obvious the Council could care less.

That's fine, they have the right to voice their opinion and stand with whom they wish, but so do I. And I cannot just ignore their choice to stand with evil and indecency. The symbol of Scotland is a thistle and it's motto, as I recall is 'No one hurts me unharmed'. I've always admired that, and I feel the same way.

So I'm afraid Auchintoshan and I are going to become strangers, along with a few other brands of Scotch I've long enjoyed. I've heard some of the Japanese brands have wonderfully improved their quality, and there are, after all other Scotches produced in other parts of Scotland. And as I'm sure you already know, I'm not going to be alone in that, as this becomes more widely known and more publicized via the Internet. In fact, I'll be publicizing it myself on my own website.

I'm afraid I simply don't have a choice in the matter, as someone who's interested in simple justice.

Regards,
Rob Miller, United States

I urge you to take a stand on this one, publicize this and write them yourselves.

California Pot Crop Worth More Than Its Wine Industry!!

http://www.wastednews.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/cannabis_cigarette.jpg

Yes,it's apparently true...but which which you rather have with a tournedos Rossini y pommes frites, a nice California Cabernet or a joint?

With an initiative on the ballot to legalize marijuana, people have been doing some figuring, and the estimates are that California's pot crop is worth $14 billion, according to a state report, while the wine crop which comes in at a mere $2 billion.

The state, which is basically broke is counting on tax revenues from pot sales to help boost it's flagging economy. What they'll probably find out instead is that many pot growers tend to be an independent lot and would just a soon move product the way they're used to doing without kicking in to the government.

So that tax money will likely just go up in smoke...

The Latest Texas Innovation: Deep Fried Beer!!

http://global.nationalreview.com/dest/2010/09/16/64277aeaa867464446a9f0227c5e9c2e.jpg

And no, I ain't kiddin'.

Members of Joshua's Army in the Lone Star State can now enjoy a brand new Texas invention.

The beer is is placed inside a pocket of salty, pretzel-like dough and then fried in in oil at 375 degrees for about 20 seconds, with the short frying time keeping the alcohol in the beer from from cooking away. The taste of the hot beer then mixes with the taste of pretzel dough.

I guess it's sort of like a beer fondue.

Even better, one could stick jalapenos in the dough or the oil...

Whoo hoo! Science!
