Watcher's Council Nominations, 6/11/08

Every week, the Watcher's Council members nominate two posts each, one of their own and one from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week's Council nominations can be found at the site of our fearless leader, the infamous Watcher of Weasels

Do take the time to check out the non-Council links as well - they're always worthwhile.

So here's this week's Council lineup...enjoy!

The Chicken or the Egg? Joshuapundit - Unless you're in a coma, you've probably noticed that a great majority of the violent and barbaric acts in our modern world are done by followers of Islam.

The question nobody wants to ask keeps floating to the surface: Is Islam to blame? Or, to put it another way, are the perpetrators simply bad Muslims or are they actually good ones who are simply more in tune with Mohammed's message than the majority? Does Islam itself promote violence? Or are the acts simply a product of primitive tribal society that persists in spite of Islam?

I'm a Fuel, Fuel, Fuel for You Soccer Dad - Soccer Dad has a few things to say about Barack Obama's downright silly proposal for a 25% windfall profits tax on oil companies. Talk about retro..he really is runing for Jimmy Carter's second term!

Omaha Beach Done With Mirrors - In honor of the anniversary of D-Day, Callimachus shares some photos with us taken by his uncle, who took part in the invasion.

The Global Warming Cult The Razor - Scott at The Razor likens global warming advocates to a cult. Interestingly, I read an article yesterday about the long term absence of sunspot activity...which is normally linked to periods of global cooling.

Excellent Article On Parenting The Colossus of Rhodey - Hube looks at an article, "The Kindergarchy," by Joseph Epstein describing two generation's of parents attitudes in raising children and believes he finds a core difference - that yesterday's children were not the center of his parents' universe.

One thing Hube and Mr. Epstein miss, I think, is that the reason so many parents hover over their kids today is because the environment is much less safe for children than it once was. This is largely because of the Leftist emphasis on rehabilitation and rights for criminals rather than on protecting society from these miscreants. And yes, I think that attitude ties in perfectly with Roe V Wade and a general attitude of marginalizing the welfare of children largely because of many of the boomer's disinclination to grow up and actually assume the responsibilities and attitudes of adulthood.

An old can tell the level of civilization in a society by how it treats children, pregnant woman and the elderly.

Quote of the Day: Gas Wars Edition Cheat Seeking Missiles - This week Laer looks at a quote from U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman that actually mentions supply and demand as the core of our high gas prices! He then goes on to examine what amounts to a 'war' between two beloved Democrat constituencies, the poverty advocates and the global warming advocates. One wonders how certain politicians are going to continue to balance the two diametrically opposed sides out...and on who's wallet.

For Once, It Really Is About the Children Bookworm Room - In light of the California Supreme Court's imposition of the legalization of gay marriage on the state, Ms. Bookworm takes the opportunity to take a basic look at the whole idea of marriage, children, fatherhood and the welfare state's influence on them.

Caring Is Not Enough The Glittering Eye - This week, Dave Schuler turns his intellectual laser beam on a particularly lame op-ed in the WAPO on universal healthcare.

As he points out, among other problems, the US is unique in having a totally unregulated border with a country that has a per capita GDP is a quarter its own.

Remembering the Heroes Rhymes With Right - Greg likewise has a post this week honoring the anniversary of D-Day. I'm still appalled that Google ( deliberately, I'm sure) chose to create a special logo honoring the Spanish painter Velasquez on June 6th and ignore a little matter like the saving of the free world from tyranny....just as they ignored memorial day.

No Threat of Heterosexual AIDS Hillbilly White Trash - Lemuel looks at the World Health Organisation (WHO) admission that the threat of a global heterosexual pandemic of HIV has virtually disappeared except in sub Saharan Africa, among intravenous drug users and among sex workers.

Dear Pakistan Wolf Howling - GW takes note of a high level Pakistani delegation's request/demand that the EU 'modify' certain aspects of freedom of expression and suggests a response in the form of a letter requesting that the Pakistanis change certain aspects of their interaction with the west instead.

The Carnival of Education: Week 174 The Education Wonks - This week EdWonks gives us a broad spectrum of the posts submitted for the Carnival of Education.
