Wild California - Cougar Sightings Near Populated Areas

A mountain lion, also known as a cougar, climbed up a 35-foot-high wooden power pole Tuesday afternoon near Cougar Buttes in Lucerne Valley on East End Road.

Californians have been rattled lately by sightings of cougars, AKA mountain lions in suburban and ex-urban areas close to mountain areas. This one was seen in Hesperia, which is by no means a small town out in the boonies! As reported in the Daily Press:

Jose Ruiz, a resident who lives across the street from the pole, told the Daily Press that the mountain lion was startled by children coming home in a Lucerne Valley Unified School District school bus. They were yelling with excitement and the big cat scurried up the pole, Ruiz said.

The mountain lion came down from the high-voltage power pole sometime Tuesday night and was not seen the next day, Ruiz said.

They've also been seen on high desert communities like Victorville.

Where I used to live, one of these critters came down from the hills, killed an Akita dog belonging to a friend of mine and dragged it back up the canyon. They don't really understand fences, pets or even small choldren and just see an easy meal, although they mostly stay clear of humans.

IDF Dog Finds Arms In Terrorist Hideout AFter Soldiers Fail

החיילת והכלב. צוות לעניין

Now I liked this one...an IDF dog sniffed out a jihadi's arms and ammo when his fellow soldiers failed to do so and were ready to leave.

During a military operation conducted last Thursday morning, soldiers from the Givati Brigade raided Bita Al Fuka, a Palestinian village near Nablus after receiving intelligence on the whereabouts of a man suspected of terrorist activities.

They found him, searched the house and were ready to take him in for questioning and leave..but then one of the IDF's dog soldiers, accompanied by his fellow soldier from the IDF's Oketz (canine) unit refused to leave the premises, even when ordered to.

So his IDF handler gave him his head, he went right to the suspects mattress and signaled that there was something of interest within. When the soldiers cut open the mattress, they found the man's arms and ammo...which may very well link him to several attacks.

If it wasn't for one stubborn IDF dog, they wouldn't have found them.

Yasser koach, kelev tov!

The IDF's dog soldiers in the Oketz unit are a valued part of Israel's defense forces. Just like their two-legged counterparts, they have their own personal serial numbers and files. And the file includes all the details a commander or Oketz handler might need to know about the dog – where it was born, when it joined the unit, what training it had completed, what operations it has participated in, the dog's level of operational preparedness, a complete health and fitness profile, and accreditations and commendations the dog has earned.

Yes, the IDF's dogs have the opportunity to complete advanced training (the norm is six months) and are recognized officially when they perform exceptionally.

Aside from missions like the one above, some are trained to be experts at finding victims of terrorism buried under rubble, as well as in the location of explosives.

Beware Of Armed Chimps! No Joke!

Especially if they're behind bars..

Santino, a male chimp at Sweden's Furuvik Zoo has apparently devised various schemes for tricking humans that has scientists rethinking their theories on animal behavior, according to a new study published in the journal PLoS One. There ar researchers who see this chimp's actions as hinting at a deep level of thinking once only associated with humans.

One day two years ago,Santino apparently got tired of being gawked at by zoo visitors, so he started throwing stones in their general direction.

Later that same day, when a different group of people approached his pen, the chimp came up with a new idea. "Santino approached them holding two stones, but this time appearing non-aggressive and munching on an apple," says Eoin O'Carroll at The Christian Science Monitor. He waited until the humans got closer and then pelted them with the rocks , taking the humans by surprise.

Santino got even craftier. Later, when no one was watching, Santino collected a large amount of hay and placed it near the visitor's section, hiding his collection of stones under it. He then plopped down on the hay, and when unsuspecting visitors came close and without any warning, pelted them with his hidden arsenal.

After zookeepers removed any rocks from his pen to prevent Santino from using them as ammo, he came up with a new tactic. Santino was caught breaking off pieces of the concrete floor, which he had fashioned into small discs he could throw.

Yes Santino is one crafty chip.

Simian males have been known to fling missiles like sticks and feces at onlookers before. I once observed a group of black children at the Bronx Zoo getting a poop bombardment from a bunch of chimps the children had been laughing at a little too exuberantly, much to the chimp's amusement. But what makes Santino's attacks different is that he planned the attacks so deliberately, varying his tactics each time for better results. Psychologists call this theory of mind, the ability to understand that others possess thoughts, desires, and motivations different from one's own.

Or in other words, Santino gave some thought to psyching out the enemy for maximum effect, and used the U.S. Marine's splendid motto..'Adapt, Improvise, Overcome'.

So, what's Santino's motivation? Michael Huffman of Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute think the primate's stone-throwing is all about testosterone, and "may serve to augment the effect of intimidation displays." Other scientists think the answer could be that Santino simply gets enjoyment out of tricking humans.

Of course, the real motivation is probably to be found in an application I located to the Federal government for a $300,000 grant from the Obama Administration's stimulus funds or its equivalent in cherries, grapes, bananas and Jack Daniels filed by one 'Dr. Santino Chimp' of Sweden to provide shovel ready jobs in a stone quarry.

I may not have gotten that last part exactly right.

Dog Dies In Fire After Saving His Master

http://www.ajc.com/multimedia/dynamic/01172/Duncan_1172377l.jpg

Scott Dunn fell asleep on his sofa yesterday at his home in Marietta, Georgia with his devoted friend Duncan, a 3 1/2-year-old boxer by his side.

“Duncan was covered up with me, and I fell asleep, and the next thing I knew, he was poking at me and barking,” Dunn said. “Normally, that means he needs to go out, but when I woke up, I couldn’t see because there was smoke.”

Dunn quickly put on his pants and boots, found his truck keys and cell phone and grabbed Duncan by the collar, then ran out of the burning house.

Somehow Duncan slipped out of his collar and was trapped in the burning house, where he died after saving the life of his owner.

"Anyone that knows me and has ever met Duncan knew he was the best dog in the world, and he didn’t deserve that,” Duncan said. “I should be there, he shouldn’t, but he saved my life.”

Firefighters later found the dog's remains and buried them in the yard.

“They weren’t going to let me watch, but I refused that. I said, ‘that’s my dog and I want to say the final goodbye.’”

Dunn said Duncan had been badly burned in the fire.“You wouldn’t recognize him, but I still leaned down, gave him a hug and gave him a kiss, and four or five of the fire department guys started crying, but I wasn’t going to let my boy go out like that,” Dunn said. “That’s my boy.”

Puppy With Two Broken Legs Crawls Home After Surviving Tornado

You have to wonder how the link between dog and man was forged thousands of years ago at the dawn of time, and how and why it endures.

Mason is a terrier mix puppy who was caught by a tornado in Alabama, thrown high in the air and landed far from home. His owners were sure he was dead, but they found him in the wreckage of their home two weeks later - after he manged somehow to crawl home on two broken legs.

"This is probably the most dramatic we've seen as far as an injury in an animal that's survived this long," said Phil Doster at Birmingham Jefferson County Animal Control shelter, who is caring for Mason following surgery.

"For an animal just to show up on someone's porch after this time was pretty remarkable, especially with the condition he's in."

Well yes, it is. But then Mason probably knew his people needed him and he wasn't going to give up until he found them, or died trying.

Canine Hero Helped Sniff Out Osama

Considering how Islam feels about dogs, it's only poetic justice that a heroic canine participated in the mission to take out Osama bin-Laden.

An explosive sniffing dog went in with SEAL Team 6, strapped to one of the SEALs as shown above.

These amazing war dogs are apparently used frequently in these operations, sport body armor, protection against shrapnel and infrared cameras that beam back images to their human SEAL partners, providing them with critical information and warning of ambushes.

The dogs are also trained to wear oxygen masks and jump from aircraft at 25,000 feet before seeking out the enemy on the ground. And it probably doesn't hurt that Muslims recoil from them and consider dogs unclean.

Below, one of the SEAL team members pays his respects to bin-Laden..

Take that jihadi!

World's Smartest Dog Has Vocabulary Of Over 1,000 Different Words

A border collie named Chaser has learned the names of 1,022 individual items -- more than any other animal.

Psychologists Alliston Reid and John Pilley of Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., taught Chaser the names of hundreds of toys, one by one, slowly and patiently, for three years as part of a research experiment in animal psychology.

"We can't say anything definitive about this, but there is agreement among breeders," he said, citing decades of breeding for herding that makes the dogs particularly attuned to learning words. "The hypothesis is that they do have a special propensity to language, they listen to the farmer."

"In the first experiment where we talk about the learning of proper nouns, the procedure we use is one where she was taught in a way that she couldn't fail," Pilley said. "We would place the object right on the floor, somewhere the dog couldn't miss."

Gradually, they moved on to other objects, and to verbs like "get" "fetch" and "go".

The scientists tested Chaser on her vocabulary by placing random groups of 20 toys in another room and having her fetch them by name. Chaser never got less than 18 out of 20 right in 838 separate tests over three years.

If Chaser is anything like some other dogs I've known, these scientists could have beaten this record if they had used food items instead of toys..believe me!
