Obama's Next Trick - Using The Lame Duck Session to Pass Cap N' Tax

At least we know now what last night's speech was really about...and it wasn't the Gulf Oil spill:

EXCLUSIVE: Phil Schiliro, the White House congressional liaison, has told the Senate to aim to take up an energy bill the week of July 12, after the July 4 break (and after the scheduled final passage of Wall Street reform). Kagan confirmation will follow, ahead of the summer break, scheduled to begin Aug. 9. The plan is to conference the new Senate bill with the already-passed House bill IN A LAME-DUCK SESSION AFTER THE ELECTION, so House members don’t have to take another tough vote ahead of midterms.

In case some of you don't realize the implications, let me spell this out.The midterms take place in November, but the new Congress doesn't seat until January. since Obama knows that the Democrats are likely to lose their majority in the House and might lose it in the Senate because of the nonsense he's already gotten through on straight party line votes, he plans on ramming through cap n' tax and whatever else he can manage in the interval between the election and the seating of the new Congress. He'll be using the votes of people who have already lost their seats, are already in a vindictive mood and have nothing to lose to do it,and the will of the people be damned.

The Republicans in the Senate need to filibuster and put whatever holds necessary they can to thwart this obscene tactic. And to ditto Jim Geraghty, every Republican challenger ought to call on his Democrat opponent repeatedly to formally pledge not to be part of this sleaze. Many of them won't of course, but then it becomes a legitimate campaign issue.
