23 Dead As Massive Blast Levels Iranian Embassy In Beirut

Two blasts near the Iranian embassy in Beirut killed at least 23 people and injured 146 today. The death toll is expected to go higher. Six buildings were destroyed in the embassy compound.

It appears that one bomb was set off by a bomber with an explosive belt while the second blast was a fairly sizable car bomb.

The Iranians, of course, blamed Israel, but the Israelis were quick to deny any involvement, which makes sense. The embassy is deep in South Beirut which is Hezbollah territory. When I first heard about this, I doubted the Mossad would risk personnel to take out an embassy target, especially in this fashion...nor do they use suicide bombers.

Sure enough, Sheikh Sirajeddine Zuraiqat, the religious guide of the Sunni Abdullah Azzam Brigades, said the group had carried out the attack in a Twitter post. "It was a double martyrdom operation by two of the Sunni heroes of Lebanon," he wrote.

So I think we can chalk this up to the current Sunni vs. Shi'te war now enveloping the Middle East.
In any case, this w3as a devastating strike.

I must say though, it's darkly amusing to see a major fomenter of terrorism like Iran screaming about being victimized by tactics like these.
