Obama To Russians On Hot Mic: "After My Election, I have More Flexibility"

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

President Obama got caught on a hot mic at the end of a 90 minute meeting in Seoul South Korea with out going Russian President Dmitri Medvedev telling him he needs more space on issues like nukes and missile defense...and that after he's re-elected, he'll have more 'flexibility' to do whatever the Russians want. Here's the transcript, courtesy of ABC's Jake Tapper:

President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space.

President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

As Tapper relates, the White House is desperately trying to spin this:

When asked to explain what President Obama meant, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications Ben Rhodes told ABC News that there is room for the U.S. and Russia to reach an accommodation, but “there is a lot of rhetoric around this issue — there always is — in both countries.

But does anyone who's actually taken a good look at the ridiculous START Treaty and this choice little item really believe it's 'just rhetoric'?

If you do, I have a wonderful money making opportunity for you via some friends of mine in Nigeria. Of course, your trust is required....just like it is to believe that this president isn't going to severely impact our ability to defend ourselves.

If the American people re-elect this naive, vengeful charlatan, they will get exactly what they deserve.

you continue to miss the point. no one cares what those/actions say/do. no one cares.

If the American people re-elect this naive,

Are you sure he didn't say "Erection?"

The American people may be naive, but I don't deserve it. I've suffered enough...

FF, I have been following your blog for a few years now because of your clarity in foreign policy. Would you kindly inform me why we don't leave Western Europe (some of the richest countries on the planet) to fend for themselves instead of bankrolling their welfare states while we pay for their defense?

Hi Nazar,
Nice to have you drop by.

Lots of people, including me have asked that question for a long time, although my question was always why we didn't have the EU countries foot the bill and pay us.

I think it became a habit after WWII, when we were faced with a devastated Western Europe, a hostile Soviet presence in Eastern Europe.

Stalin lied to FDR , a dying man at the time, at the Yalta conference when he assured FDR that the Red Army with withdraw after Germany's defeat. (Side note, Roosevelt's chief adviser was Alger Hiss, later shown to be a Soviet agent). Instead they occupied those countries and made them part of the Soviet Empire.

Had Truman demanded the Soviet's retreat, Stalin likely would have ( we had the Bomb, they didn't at that time.He didn't.( The Truman Administration was saddled with a number of high level Soviet agents like Hiss and Harry Dexter White). Instead we created the Marshall Plan and NATO and put bases in Europe, especially in Germany as a counter weight to the Russians.

There's no question we could have significantly reduced our defense footprint in Europe after 1989, when the Soviet Empire fell.Perhaps they were afraid that the desperate Russians would invade Western Europe, something I don't think the Russians were capable of at that point. Why we never asked EU nations like Germany to kick in for the cost of maintaining our troops and our bases there, I have no idea. GHW Bush certainly got the Saudis, UAE and Kuwaitis to pay the cost of Desert Storm rather than the American taxpayer.

At the present time, the Russians, thanks to the fecklessness of Presidents Clinton, Dubya and especially Obama have recovered a bit of their old edge militarily..and apparently President Obama is bent on increasing it by degrading our military capabilities.

I hope I answered your question.

Watch yer six bro, OK?

Best Regards,
Rob
