SecDef Gates : US does not plan Iran attack
Us Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said today that the US sending a second US aircraft carrier group to the Persian Gulf region (the USS Stennis) is not intended to be part of a deployment for a war with Iran.
According to Gates, the reason for shipping the USS Stennis out to the Gulf was to reassure US allies and any other interested parties that the Gulf is a vital interest to the USA.
"Nobody is planning, we are not planning for a war with Iran," Gates said.
According to SecDef Gates' statement, the United States' main aim involves countering Iranian influence inside Iraq to stop what he called networks providing explosives used to make roadside bombs that are powerful enough to destroy a US tank.
"Because we are acting against the Iranians' activities in Iraq, it has given rise to some of these talks" of US intentions to attack Iran, he said, adding that there is no such plan.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid I believe him. Iran is extremely vulnerable right now, but the confrontation with the mullahs will likely be postponed until it's far more costly. I hope I'm wrong.

given the fact that iran has more support in the current congress than the USA has, i'd say the worst is yet to come.
