Fugitive Rapist And Murderer Of Marine Caught In Mexico

You'll remember the case of Cesar Laurean, who fled after murdering a fellow marine who accused him of rape.

Laurean has been running since January, after the charred remains of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach and her unborn baby were found buried in Laurean's backyard. .

Laurean had been Lauterbach's senior officer at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina until she accused him of raping her. After the bodies were found, Laurean fled and a murder charge was filed.

At the time, I posted his stats in the hope he would be caught before he made it to Mexico.

Well, bad news and good news: Laurean did manage to make it to Mexico, but he's finally been apprehended in the small Mexican town of San Juan de la Vina.

Unfortunately, since our treaty with Mexico precludes them from turning over fugitives to United States jurisdiction who might face capital puishment,US officials had to promise Mexican Authorities that they would not seek the death penalty if Laurean's convicted. Instead, he'll face life in prison.

Depending on whether he waives extradition, Laurean's return to the US could take anywhere from a few days to a couple of years.

In a nice bit of poetic justice, it was apparently Laurean's wife Christina who dropped a dime on him and alerted authorities to his whereabouts after Laurean communicated with her via a local internet cafe to ask her to wire him money..yet another example of a really stupid criminal...
