The Israeli Navy seized a huge arms shipment today bound for Syria and Hezbollah.
Hundreds of tons of weaponry, ten times the size of the Karine A shipment of 2002, were seized in an overnight raid Tuesday by the Israeli navy, some 100 nautical miles west of Israel, officials said. The ship seized was sailing under an Antiguan flag.
The transfer of such large amounts of weapons, "is done in order to create a balance of terror with Israel," said Brigadier General Rani Ben-Yehuda, deputy commander of the Israeli navy, at a press conference.
Defense officials said the 140-meter long Francop,, captured near Cyprus, was carrying arms sent by Iran and destined for Syria and Hezbollah.
The ship had been monitored by the Israelis for several days, and they raided it, examined the cargo, and after receiving permission from what the Jerusalem Post deftly calls 'relevant authorities' brought the ship and its huge illegal arms cargo home to Israel. The papers clearly show that the point of origin was Iran.
'Illegal'? Well yes, actually.Aside froim violating several UN Security Council resolutions prohibiting Iran from transferring weaponry, it was a direct violation of UNSC Resolution 1701 forbidding arms trafficking to Hezbollah.
Call me cynical, but somehow I have a distinct feeling that Iran is not going to suffer any penalties at the hands of the UN for violating international law and the UN Charter it signed as a member.

ff essay didn't say who was going to be the most angry at israel for this violation of international law by israel?
hussein or the little stopngo clerk?
i wonder, when will hillary demand that the evil joos return irans property to the rightful owner?
now that the evil joos have the enemy weaponry, which i'm sure is available on the open market anyways, this has the making of a great paperback.
the iranians are the enemy?
Actually, I don't think there's going to be any 'international' or US feedback on this right now, nor anything much from Iran.
To the mullahs - cost of doing biz and on to the next shipment.
Th eUS is still trying to figure out WTF to do about Iran. There are only three choices, really. Ally with them, learn to live with their nukes and demands or go to war with them...and Obama doesn't like making choices.
The ship and its crew are a charter flying the flag of Antigua and will be released.
The lethal toys? The Israelis will examine them to see what's being shipped to Syria and Hezbollah and what tricks they can glean. They know that some of this stuff is going to get through, so they need to know how to counteract it.
Anything they can use themselves for the IDF, they will appropriate and modify as needed. The rest will end up being sold in the international market to reliable customers outside the Middle East or destroyed.
