Egypt: Mubarak To Resign Today

Various sources are saying that today's the day. It appears that the army has moved at last.

Following an all-day meeting of the country's supreme military council that included Defense Minster Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and military chief of staff Gen. Sami Anan, the army said all the protesters' demands would be met and a further statement was due to be made later Thursday.

A spokesman read a statement that the council was in permanent session to explore "what measures and arrangements could be made to safeguard the nation, its achievements and the ambitions of its great people." Interestingly enough, that statement was entitled 'communique #1'.

I believe what we're going to see is an interim military government with General Omar Suleiman, the current vice president in charge and the Muslim Brotherhood's acquiescence in exchange for certain concessions - exactly as I predicted from the start.

Mubarak is scheduled to address the nation on state TV tonight. He will likely announce his resignation in favor of Suleiman, who will make a few promises to the demonstrators but repeat his warning about 'civil disobedience' and 'chaos'.

The devil's bargain between the army and the Muslim Brotherhood has been done, and it will be interesting to see how it holds up.Suleiman is far from being a naive fool about these matters.
