Libya On Fire - Khaddaffi Reported To Have Fled!
In an astonishing turn of events, the protesters in Libya appear to have the upper hand.
As I reported yesterday, much of the army jumped to the side of the protesters. They apparently have control of Benghazi,Libya's second city and marched into Tripoli, the capitol where they set the parliament building on fire.
Khaddaffi has reportedly already fled the country, en route to Venezuela. The Venezuelans are denying this. Another report had him heading to a compound in Sebha, the small desert town where he grew up.
400 people have reportedly been killed during the protests with more reported killed in Tripoli as protests reached the capital for the first time and more army units reportedly defected to the opposition. The protesters reportedly already have a foothold in Tripoli under their control.
Two Libyan Libyan fighter jet pilots landed their aircraft in Malta today, after requesting political asylum and even Khaddaffi's own UN ambassadors are demanding he step down.
Deputy Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi said that if the dictator does not relinquish power, 'the Libyan people will get rid of him'.And he also urged the international community to impose a no-fly zone over Libya to stop any mercenaries, weapons and other supplies from reaching Khaddaffi and his security forces.
It remains to be seen what comes out of this. This could actually spell the end for the oligarchy of Khaddaffi and his family.
