The UN wants Club Gitmo closed down.

According to al-Reuters, The UN "Committee against Torture" wants Club Gitmo and alleged `secret jails' shut down by the US.

The Committee also wants President Bush to ban interrogation methods that could be regarded as so-called torture or cruel treatment, including the use of dogs to terrify detainees, and sexual humiliation, claiming several prisoners had died during interrogation...without citing any specifics.

The U.S. State Department said that the recommendations go beyond the committee's anti-torture mandate.

The Committee also stated that the United States "should ensure that no one is detained in any secret detention facility under its de facto effective control".

"Detaining persons in such conditions constitutes, per se, a violation of the Convention," said the body which examines compliance with the 1987 U.N. Convention against Torture or other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The good dhimmis at the U.N. committee were further concerned at "reliable reports of acts of torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" by U.S. military or civilian personnel.

The United States "should cease to detain any person at Guantanamo Bay and close this detention facility, permit access by the detainees to judicial process or release them as soon as possible..." the committee said.

John Bellinger, top legal adviser at the U.S. State Department, said the U.N. findings contained "factual and legal inaccuracies".

No Kidding.

"We also think they have gone beyond their mandate in a number of areas -- recommendations like closing Guantanamo Bay and calling Guantanamo a per se violation of the Convention. We think there is no legal or factual basis for that," he added.

What there is a factual basis for is the human rights violations in Darfur, in Cuba, in Iran, in China, and in a lot of other third world hellholes. G-d forbid that the UN would ever concern itself in any serious way with that.

Unfortunately, the Bush Administration continues to take these people seriously, forgoing one of the chief weapons in a war against an honor/shame culture - humiliation and psychological warfare, which has nothing whatever to do with pulling someone's fingernails out, or any other kind of physical torture.

Yeah, I posted on this just above.

Hamas is having trouble getting money into their coffers because the US and Israel have used legal means to shut down the ability of banks to deal with them..there ar international banking conventions and treaties against handling terorist money and only a handful of banks stoopid enough to have branches in `Palestine'.

This was a cash contribution to Hamas from the Saudis or more likely Iran, IMO

U.S. out of U.N. U.N. out of U.S.
What a waste of valuable Manhatten real estate. Bulldoze it in into the East river and build condos in it's place.

I'm all for it, Rosey..especially if they evacuate all the Americans who work there first and don't tell anyone else!

You suppose Kofi can swim?

On second thought, being as it's the East River, it doesn't matter if he can or not...
