JCS Mullen: 'We Can Stop Islamic Extremism by Teaching People to Read The Qu'ran…'

Want to know why we're still not victorious in the War on Jihad? Listen to Admiral Mike Mullen, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who thinks the main reason is because all those Muslims are illiterate and don't understand the Qu'ran well enough!

In a speech at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, Mullen said that Hamas, Hezbollah, the Taliban and al-Qaida can be deterred by the threat of retaliation, but efforts to attack the basis of extremism were essential through support of education and development.

“Attacking the humiliation, the hopelessness, the illiteracy and abject poverty which lie at the core of the attraction to extremist thought will do more to turn the tide against terrorism than anything else,” the chairman said. “We can continue to hunt and kill their leaders, and we will. But when a person learns to read, he enters a gateway toward independent education and thought. He becomes more capable, more employable, and enjoys a sense of purpose in his life.

“He will understand the Quran for what it is and not merely what his mullah tells him it is, who is equally uneducated,” Mullen continued. “He can raise his children to a higher standard of living than the one he knew, an aspiration shared by parents around the world. And his wife will help him prevent the despair that might lead a child of theirs into the arms of al-Qaida or the Taliban.”

I'm not sure which is more shocking...Admiral Mullen's ignorance of the Qu'ran itself or of the people who comprise the leadership and even much of the rank and file of the groups he's talking about.

They are mostly highly educated, from the middle and upper classes and know what's in the Qu'ran, the Sirrah and the Hadiths a lot better than Admiral Mullen apparently does.Let's look at just a few of these uneducated, poverty stricken ignorant Muslims.

Osama bin-Ladin came from a wealthy and privileged family in Saudi Arabia, studied economics and business administration at King Abdulaziz University and earned a degree in civil engineering. Dr. Ayman Zawahiri, the number two of al-Qaeda, was born to a prominent upper middle class family in Egypt and came from a large family of doctors and scholars. He graduated from from Cairo University in 1974 with an advanced degree, served three years as a surgeon in the Egyptian Army and later earned a master's degree in surgery.

Khalid Meshaal, the leader of Hamas holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Kuwait University. The late unlamented Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a founder of Hamas attended al-Azhar University in Cairo and had a career as an educator. Another now deceased founder, Dr. Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi was a pediatrician who graduated first in his class at Egypt's Alexandria University. Ismail Haniyeh, the current Hamas political leader in Gaza graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza with a degree in Arabic literature,Dr. Mahmoud al-Zahar, Hamas' 'foreign minister' and bagman got his degree in medicine from Cairo University.

Hezbollah's supreme authority is Iran's Ayatollah Khamanei, but Sheik Hassan Nasrallah studied at Shi'a seminaries in the Beqaa Valley town of Baalbek, at Najaf, Iraq, and at Qom in Iran. Former chief of operations Imad Mughniyeh was a student in the engineering department at the American University of Beirut, while Naim Qassem, Hezbollah's second in command came from a wealthy merchant family and likewise studied at Shia seminaries.

There are a great many more examples, not least of which are a number of American jihadis like Sami al-Arian, the Fort Hood killer Major Hasan and Adam Yahiye Gadahn, who likewise were poverty stricken, illiterate and experienced the message of Islam only through what their imams and mullahs told them, right?

Yes, just a group of ignorant peasants with far less insight into the Qu'ran than Admiral Mullen. Some of them have only spent decades studying it.

And the part about how a jihadi's wife is going to talk him or his children out of 'martyrdom'? Priceless, simply priceless.

Admiral Mullen should actually take a real look at what's in the Qu'ran, and how all four major fiqhs (schools of Islamic jurisprudence)agree on certain basic elements where infidels and jihad are concerned. If he had, the last thing he'd want is for more Muslims to spend time studying it in depth.

I can appreciate that Admiral Mullen works for the Obama Administration and is compelled to perform based on this absurdity. But is it really necessary for him to shill for it in public?

This kind of dhimmitude not only insults us, but the Islamic world as well as they contemplate an infidel trying to tell them what's in the Qu'ran.

The most important thing st winning a war are to know yourself and to know your enemy. By the nature of this speech it appears Admiral Mullen does not understand our enemy. While it is certainly possible, as your second to last paragraph may suggest, he may simply going through the motions for political expediency, in any event, this definitely does not inspire my confidence, Unfortunately it is hardly surprising that the Admiral would make this statement.

Obama is a tool of the Muslims, if not a Muslim himself, but it was Bush who started this "Islam is a religion of peace" nonsense. Let's never forget that. Do you really expect JCS Mullen to openly contradict the last two Commander's in Chief he's served under? I'm only wondering if this is for public consumption. Do they really believe this at the Pentagon? Some of the officers must know better.

That's what happens when you have Democrat Presidents, and Democrat Congressional majorities for roughly sixty out of the last seventy two years. You're not going to find many George Pattons appointed to high positions by that bunch.

There's a funny, wrong-headed logic to Mullen's suggestion. Back in the Middle Ages, more than anything else, what broke the hold of the Catholic Church was literacy. People started reading the Bible themselves, make the Catholic hierarchy unnecessary and allowing the formation of other Christian sects.

The problem is that the Koran isn't the Bible, that Muslims aren't European Christians and, of course, that Mullen forgets two hundred plus years of incredibly bloody religious wars.

Well said, Bookworm.

Pagan Temple , we are definitely going to have to channel our inner Pattons and Stonewall Jacksons in the near future.

Disgraceful that we should be still fighting a bunch of failed states and 7th century brigands after nine years.
