The Left demonizes Sarkozy

As the final round of the French Presidential elections comes to a close, the Left is desperately doing it's best to demonize the front runner, center-Right candidate and former interior minister Nicholas Sarkozy.

He's being characterized by Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal as a dangerous tyrant who's election would threaten the peace of France.

She's behind in the polls by a mere 4 points and has denounced her opponent for the “great violence” and “brutality” of a campaign that she maintained was frightening voters...while on the other hand, she plans to frighten voters in tommorow's final debate by contrasting her “France at peace with itself” with Sarkozy’s “France of the hard Right”!

I guess frightening the voters is OK, if the right people do it. As usual, the Left seems to have the ability to take hypocrisy to new heights.

Royal also got some of her supporters in the arts and entertainment to shill for this message in a last minute bid to try and put Royal over. A group of them in endorsed a statement saying that
“Sarkozy embodies a hard radicalized Right . . . with all its fears and hates. Entrusting the presidency to a demagogue like this means real danger.”

Royal's main hope in winning is to capture the 18% of the center Left electorate whom voted for François Bayrou. After vilifying Bayrou during the first round as stalking horse for Sarkozy, she's now courting him and his voters by trying to cultivate fears of a Sarkozy presidency in them.

The Socialists have also been busily courting France's Muslim vote, subtly highlighting Sarkozy's Jewish heritage .

Sarkozy, for his part simply said “Why so much hate? Maybe it is because I say out loud what everyone thinks to themselves.”

The elections take place this weekend. As I've said before, the French have a clear choice before them.
